The government is planning to set up Zambia’s fourth public university that will include a new school of medicine in Livingstone.

Southern Province Permanent Secretary Dr Chileshe Mulenga says the university, will be named after the Scottish explorer and missionary, David Livingstone.

Dr Mulenga says there is need for the Tourist Capital to have medical services that will match international standards.

He was speaking on Friday at the 10th Graduation Ceremony for the Livingstone School of Nursing.

At the same occasion Health Minister Dr Joseph Kasonde said the government wants to up-grade the Livingstone General Hospital to a central hospital.

Dr Kasonde says the Patriotic Front government is keen to deliver on its promises and that it has already allocated money to the Ministry of Health for it to take health services as close to the people as possible.

He notes that granduands from the Livingstone School of Nursing will take Zambia closer to having enough human resource in the health sector.

And Livingstone General Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr High Monze has thanked the government and its co-operating partners for the support rendered to improve the facility.

Meanwhile, Livingstone School of Nursing Principal Tutor Filbert Macha says the learning institution has recorded a ninety per cent pass rate this year as compared to the seventy per cent last year.

  1. “The government is planning…” Zambians should not pin their hopes on this statement because it is hollow and is meant to hoodwink the gullible. If this is going to be the fourth public university idn Zambia, what has happened to the plans to establish two public universities in the northern part of Zambia? There are more questions than answers.

  2. Too many promises and nothing is happening. What about other universities that were mentioned, the bottom road (short cut to Chirundu), Chingola – Kitwe dual way, Zambia Railways, redesign Lusaka, Mongu – Kalabo rd, expansion of Kafue gorge power station, etc. Mr Chikwanda will be the chief supplier of no supplies I am sure. The family tree is gearing up together with their cohorts. Phew!

    • You ***** the bottom road is already under construction. Just after siavonga turn off you will find a camp of chinese contractors at work.

    • be objective if you have been in management position you will know that it is difficult to turn eventhing around. i have hope for better zambia where everyone will be proud of

    • 5.1, you stupid, never insult your friends. The bottom roa has been a project since 2007. Check on the roads in Gwembe all the way. Learn to ahve good blogging manners. You shamelessly insult! GIP (Gabbage in gabbage Out)

  3. You start from planning, whats wrong with you,i think certain people are running short of issues to criticise.Govt programmes always start from a declaration of intent.for your information the two universities in muchinga are on course.Keep on doubting while PF works on its promises

  4. @6 rodrik have you forgotten that the PF had planned to do so much in 90 days.Men of action led by the Man of action yet with SMALL SMALL SCHOOL(IT’S THE DREAM TEAM).Degrees which are never studied for don’t work.Anyway, let them keep on fooling fools.Ifwe tu pounda fye.Koppala swag.NIZEE!!!!!!!

  5. Guys couldnt they think of a bettere name for the University than david Livingston. isnt it enough that the town itself is named after him? Mosi-oa-Tunya University would have made more sense.

  6. Un coordinated PF plans. University there, University here, what for? Why not improve existing universities before coming up with new ones? CNP for good

  7. Only in PF’s sick dreams. Mere wishful thinking. Since independence Zambia has only two public universities. Actually initially we only had one, UNZA and later ZIT was upgraded to CBU. We are failing to adequately fund these two institutions so how do we expect to have more universities?

  8. The idea of a university is welcome news, but I do not agree with it being named after the Scottish explorer. We have more than enough local names that mean and remind us of incredible contributions to our country. Livingstone is already honoured by having this tourist capital of Zambia named after him.
The best PF govt can do if they have no credible names for this university, is float the idea to the public and let the people make suggestions.

  9. Too many similarities between the former Kaunda authoritarian govt. and this PF regime. They make so many pronouncements but always fall short of implementing them. People are bored with the usual rhetoric, just turn your country into a construction site so that you can give it a face lift it deserves. Your nationals are always praising Europe instead of marketing their own country, Zambia. It is absolutely sickening, I for one would not praise Europeans or anyone else but my country, South Africa. Never. Zambians like yourselves, be like Somalians. Oh, Somalians are very proud of Somalia even though, there is nothing that which resembles a country in Somalia. Viva, HH & UNPD, peace to all Zambians

  10. Since when was it in the remit of a Permanent Secretary to make new policy pronouncements? I urge everyone to dismiss the nonsense.

  11. Dr High Monze what a name, such names are found in southern province and am sure he is always high if we go by his name. we patiently waiting to see the unversity.

  12. I honerstly blv that Pf gvmt is going 2 deliver. The idea of putting up a medical school in livingstone is sweet music.I Wld like 2 differ with pipo insituating tha GRZ has failed 2 run UZA and CBU.The pipo that have failed these 2 institution are the administrators. Can sum1 tell me how tution fees are used? My own observation is that zambia lacks competent admnistrators.I’Ve seen a situation whereby pipo tasked 2 kip the round about clean have lamentably failed 2 maintain it.

  13. #2. ‘Two public universities in the northern part of Zambia’? We only heard of one, at Chinsali. Lies, lies and distortions, against the majority.

  14. #13, SOMETIMES KEEPING ON IMPROVING ONE THING DOES NOT WORK. ZAMBIA NEEDS AT LEAST TWO UNIVERSITIES IN EACH PROVINCE IN A SPACE OF LESS THAN 10 YEARS TO GIVE RELIEF TO THE EXISTING TWO UNIVERSITIES. WHEN THE OTHER TWO UNIVERSITIES GET DI CONGESTED THIS IS WHEN IMPROVING THE OLD ONES WOULD MAKE A LOT OF SENSE. MIND YOU UNZA BUILDINGS HAS A LOT OF STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS. THE ISREALITES NEVER FINISHED CONSTRUCTING IT. THEY ABANDONED IT TOGETHER WITH ALL THE DETAILED BLUE PRINTS. ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN AT UNZA KNOWS WHAT AM TALKING ABOUT. STEEL RODS PROTRUDE ALL OVER THE CORNERS. A SIGN CONSTRUCTION WAS NEVER COMPLETED. RIGHT FROM THE BEGINING THERE HAS BEEN SERIOUS WATER LEAKAGE PROBLEMS DUE TO THE STRUCTURAL-INCOMPLETENESS. SO, NEW UNIVERSITIES IS RIGHT ON, WITH LITTLE MAINTENANCE TO THE OLD ONES.

  15. #15 AND THE ONE ABOVE. LIVINGSTONE IS A NAME ASSOCIATED TO TOURISM AND IT’S A MARKETING STRATEGY. BAICE MULESAMBILILA MULEISHIBE FINTU. THERE’S SOMETHING IN A NAME, MIND YOU. NAMING THE UNIVERSITY LIVINGSTONE WILL EVEN ATTRACT FOREIGN STUDENTS. UNZA CAN’T ATTRACT ANY FOREIGN STUDENT NOW.

  16. IN FACT LIVINGSTONE UNIVERSITY MAKES MORE SENSE THAN UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA. AS IF ZAMBIA ONLY MEANT TO BUILD ONE UNIVERSITY FOR THE LIFE OF ZAMBIA. I FIND THE NAME UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA VERY STUPID. IT COULD HAVE BEEN CITY OF LUSAKA UNIVERSITY OR LUSAKA EAST UNIVERSITY OR MUNALI UNIVERSITY. NAMING A UNIVERSITY WITH THE NAME OF THE TOWN OR SIDE OF THE TOWN IS MORE SENSIBLE AND FLEXIBLE.

    • you are the one that is st.upid! The institution shall remain the univ of Zambia. If you knew its history, you would keep your mouth shut – KK asked Zambians TO DONATE FUNDS FOR A UNIVERSITY – & they did – SO IT BECAME ZAMBIA’S UNIVERSITY!!!!

  17. Has the time frame been given? 90days/360days/??? Perhaps they now know that time frames are no good as they might just find themselves hiring and firing engineers/contractors etc. I shall eagerly await. Nafuti nafuti!

  18. Why naming after Livingstone???? How about Zambian heroes such as Nkumbula etc etc. Livingstone has already earned his name – the city!

  19. 4th university?? I thought Ukwa had indicated upgrading chalimbana and building another one in Northern province? CNP for sure

  20. The way to GO. Continue being opposition southern province. All politicians will try to impress you by giving developments. You will finally be the most developed province. Keep voting for opposition .. be in NAREP, UDA, ADD, UPND OR MMD. As long as it is not the ruling party! Kudos to you southerners. You have the right way of hitting on politicians!

  21. The upgrading of colleges into universities started with MMD, the plans to build universities in every province are already there with MMD who stated them. Just like they belt schools and they begun to build stadiums and roads, and many other projects. It is not the PF who is planning, it has already been planned and Levi talked about all these projects and He started working then AlaBi (RB) nao continued on the same. There is nothing new that the PF govt has brought. Baleumfwa nensoni pakufi landa because tefyabo.

  22. A new university in Livingstone when UNZA and CBU need upgrading. The current upgrade of UNZA only for the all Africa games is not far reaching[-(

  23. Too much for Livingstone. Actually Southern province has many nursing schools compared to any other province. This university should have been built in Nakonde or Samfya.
