A concerned Gwembe resident has appealed to the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to consider cropping crocodiles that he said have continued to attack both humans and livestock on Lake Kariba.

In a walk in interview, Charles Musunga told ZANIS that over 10 heads of cattle were reported dead in two weeks in villages surrounding the lake shores in Sinafala area.

Areas such as Chifumpu and Madonda villages have suffered loss following crocodiles attack on livestock.

Mr Musunga said during the dry season, animals are forced to graze and drink water from the crocodile infested lake, resulting in livestock attack.

This has continued to worry livestock owners who have continued to lose their animals to the over-populated reptiles.

Cattle have from time immemorial, been the wealth of the valley Tonga people owing to poor arable areas and animals are chiefly used as draught power and a source of income.

Mr Musunga has appealed to government to consider empowering ZAWA with ammunition to enable them reduce the crocodile population that has continued to be life-threatening to both human beings and livestock.

  1. Clear to me that our people are very ignorant on what they can obtain from crocodiles.
    1. Meat. Here in Botswana, you can find Crocodile meat in exclusive butcheries and tourists love eating exotic dishes such as crocodile meat!
    2. Leather for Shoes and Hand bags. These are more expensive than bags or shoes made from cattle. Computer carrying cases made from crocodile skins are also more expensive!
    3. Tourist attractions. If captured these beasts can be kept in a safe area where tourists can be paying to see them.

This whole element of crocodile management could be turned into an industry – Keeping them, processing meat for exotic restaurants, producing leather for export are essentials that can be done by a company funded and owned by the community in Gwembe,

    • which part of Boswana, thrz just 1 shop n the place is a desert,go 2 Mongu in Mabumbu ull find a crocodile farm,go to Lstone ull oso find a croc farm

  2. ZAWA is toothless. why have more concern for crocs than for people? maybe we should just poison the whole lake Karibato wipe out these crocs since ZAWA is hopeles and helpless.

  3. Lusaka Airport: You are wrong and must think of other citizens who know better than Zawa in looking after our heritage. Think of your children. Don’t you think that your kids deseerve to be educated enough to appreciate nature? If you wipe out all the crocs, where will your kids go to appreciate their natural heritage as citizens of Zambia? It is clear to me that the MMD have done beyond economic damage to Zambia but also mental damage to the people as seen from several of the useless postings here.

  4. Mwamba2 please don’t be political all the times.Human life is far more important than the benefits that can be as a result of keeping a man / livestock eater. if ZAWA do not want to control the population of these beasts then it leaves the community with no choice but to wipe them out after all a cattle is more beneficial all its life till way beyond its daeth than a croc which is just a one of thing. Learn to hear what other people are saying instead of been trigger happy always wanting to shot others down, intelligence is free of charge.
