University Teaching Hospital-UTH- Managing Director, Dr. Lackson Kasonka, says the case in which a one year old baby died due to alleged negligence of medical personnel is now a closed chapter.
Baby Francis Bwalya junior who was admitted at the UTH intensive care unit died on October 8th 2012.
This followed the rotting of his right hand after a named medical officer at the country’s highest referral health institution tightened the infant’s right hand with a plaster with a view of locating a vein and inserting a carnula.
The infant was left tied overnight leading to the hand turning black and brittle.
Following the baby’s death Dr. Kasonka could not release the report to establish the cause of death stating that he was still studying it.
However, the baby’s mother has denied ever having settled the matter with UTH management and has since threatened to take legal action.
BA DOCTOR BACHAKOLWA, HE TIGHT THE BABYS HAND AND WENT TO TAKE ALCOHOL,I KNOW UTH DOCTORS,THERE DRANKARDS AND WOMANISERS.
do not generalize, there are people working hard and sacrificing for the country.
the bitterness you have expressed could mean that you tried to get academic and professional qualifications like them but failed. Or kapena bana kupoka gelo
This Luckson Kasonka man is killing a lot of children at UTH. If the job is too big for him, why not step aside?
Shame that history is still catching up withus……….despite the new technology
Awe ba UTH it is too much, your institution is making headlines for the wrong reasons. i’m sure you have your explanations but too numerous complaints against your institution to be taken lightly. life is precious bane pull up your stockens. Is it impossible to make UTH a centre of excellence?
Which intern was it that left a tourniquet on an infant ALL NIGHT! That is gross negligence. You are supposed to untie that immediately you draw the blood. It doesn’t make sense..its almost a knee jerk reaction to untie the tourniquet. The family should sue UTH.Dr Kasonka come on guy this is a serious case that should not be dismissed lightly. Please people -doctors are not gods you should ask lots of questions when you are being treated.
This is very very sad. The negligent Doctor should have his linces revocked. It is un acceptable.
Yeah, also they should revoke his practicing license.
This was so cos docs in ZED never explain procedures to patients cos the mother could have reminded a nurse to check. Where were the nurses anyway? Any child or adult patient who has had blood taken or drip inserted should be observed frequently and a baby in a ward with no form of observation to lead to such is gross negligence.Infact the nurses on duty and the doc himself/herself should be answerable to prevent further occurences.Awe mwe e e e e.
Everyone professional is responsible for his or her own actions. Therefore it is wrong for mary to question and ask were the nurses were as they are not a memory chip for the doctors. This is a pure case of suboptimal medical standard and neglect which is been covered up by UTH.The medical staff involved must be named and shamed.
Iwe katininemo at UTH doctors always work with nurses. The baby would have been crying the whole night, which would have alerted the mother and the nurses why the baby was crying. Was the mother too blind to see how tight the tirnoquet was, was she sleeping the whole night, were the nurses observing the child, if not why, if they were observing how come they did not notice the cyanised arm. All those who were on duty are answerable
Negligence allegations of this nature cannot be investigated by the accused. This must be done by an independent body. I am sure this family is deemed not influential enough and thus such careless statements coming from a person who should know better in terms of ethics. Urge the family to take legal action, which in fact they should have had from the word go.
its not gross negligence, …. its satanism.
munati votela chani:-\”
UTH is a very useless hospital I have ever come accross. People at UTH just die alive. UTH is just a conduit to the grave. Patients at UTH die unnecessarily. Lives that are supposed to be saved, are made to die by the same people who are supposed to save lives. I am also begnining to believe reports that certain doctors at UTH are satanists. They cause the death of patients using their satanic rituals.
I agree with this panel totally. Dr Kasonka can not investigate his own negligence by his own surbodinate. Mothers always ask what procedure the health personnel is undertaking before anything is done. There is a certain dentist at Wusakile mine hospital who also tells you the purpose and the procedure to be down. Everyone who has ever gone to this clinic will tell they always prefer him to other doctors at this dental clinic. Mothers remember you are the best and last defence for our ill children.

A very prejudicious community. did you even know how many hours the named doctor worked that night. he might have even saved some of your relatives but you are there cursing him. ma rubbish ya bantu!
please let them do something about mortuary at UTH.The environment is bad needs ventilators .how do you expect doctors to be of top class with such environment which lucks cleaness.
This wrong. THE UTH cannot investigate itself. what zambia needs is an independent body to investigate all malpractices in medical institutions and hold even witchdoctors responsible for their mischief in promising things that are scientifically impossible. in addition this body would be responsible to recommend any citizen to be evacuated to any medical centre in world instead of letting such a decision be one for politicians to make. the body should also be able to develop all medical institutions’ budgets and monitor how the medical institutions use their budgetary funds and work towards zambia having institutions that could be able to deal with any known illness among citizens, thus ending the current obsession with medical tourism.
