Chiefs from Central Province have strongly condemned Members of Parliament (MPs) defecting from one political party to another.

The Chiefs say defections are uncalled for and just drain huge resources from the nation.

Reading the resolutions on behalf of other chiefs in Kabwe, Chieftainess Mwenzwa of the Illa speaking people in Itezhi-tezhi district, said money meant for by-elections could be channelled to needy areas like construction of roads, schools, health and police posts among other capital projects.

The traditional leaders made their resolutions during the consultative meeting for chiefs organised by government through the Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs.

The chiefs lamented that by-elections are costly to the nation and appealed to MPs against being ‘political prostitutes’.

“As chiefs, we add our voices on MPs who have a developed a tendency of running from one party to another. This conduct is un-called for and a drain on our meagre financial resources. Money meant for by-election can be channled to needy areas particularly improving the livelihood of our subjects in our chiefdoms,” charged the traditional leaders.

The traditional leaders, drawn from the chiefdoms of the Illas, Lenjes and Swakas drawn from Central Province, also resolved to be non-partisan and pledged total support to the Government of the day.

The Chiefs noted strongly that they made their resolution knowing very well that all politicians were their children.

And Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister, Nkandu Luo, commended the chiefs for their wise decision and that government would depend on them for guidance and wise counsel.

Prof Luo said government is in a hurry to taking development closer to the people in chiefdoms.

She, however, appealed to the traditional leaders to help government fight all forms of gender based violence, early marriages and excessive beer drinking in their chiefdoms because the vices retard development.

  1. In Zambia we need to come up with a policy concerning MP’s to avoid by elections,i believe an MP is a representative of the people despite the political affilation.
and we need to outline what we want them to do in our consitituencies, also if they are free to defect there should be a way to remove them if not performing to the expectation of the people.

  2. The chiefs lamented that by-elections are costly to the nation and appealed to MPs against being ‘political prostitutes’.

  3. The ruling party will definately benefit from the defections we are witnessing. But the solution to is MPs who switch parties must be barred from standing, on moral, financial, trust, personal image, society ramifications for grneral membership and on political beliefs of MPs.

  4. The resolutions are void due to lack of representation from the Lala chiefs. Lol! Very valid observation by their royal hignesses. We basic needs such as water and decent shelter, not the needless by elections.

  5. As the consultations continue on the new constitution someone shud submit that anybody who defects after an shud not b illegible to stand or b appointed to an position until after 10 years. The President shud also b curtailed on his ability to appoint opposition MPs without consultation

  6. Chiefs think far much wiser than politicians (whynter kawimba) who don’t care how much is spent on by-elections

  7. These are wise chiefs and we needs all Zambian chiefs to stand for the same. They should lead the way to decampaign mps who defect to other parties.

  8. Central chiefs have spoken well. ok they use wisdom so you useless opposition mps more so mmd take heed ba fi color!

  9. Thankyou my chiefs from c p. I appreciate that mkushi is divided into two infact its taking back the boma were it was b 4. We still have Mboroma police and Mboroma post office and i strongly feel the district should be named Mboroma and not Luano. Ba kankomba think about this. There is district called sinazongwe in SP and a chief called same name no problem.

  10. Ati’Nkandu Luo commended chiefs for their decision’ wait and see what will happen to prof.I agree with chiefs in totality. We also need jobs as well.

  11. Our current constitution is very porous with issues of resource management and politics, something has to change about by-elections and the time to act is. Are Zambian politics too big to fail?

  12. Dere is nothing u can do as at now . No 1 is stopped by law and dat borders on democratic tenants. ln Zambia no party can b said to b practicing democracy . Wen u stop any of dis mps u are violeting deir hr u see. Dem’cy very expensive.koseni fye!

  13. Seems chiefs are cleverer than PF or parliamentarians. No wonder its taking us almost a decade to draft a constitution. Dull leaders

  14. This type of prostitution started with MMD, the only way to end it is put a RECALL  LAW in the constitution. The constituency citizens should have the power to recall their representative if he is not performing or he is acting outside their interests of development of the constituency. We happen to have rogue MP’s who does not care about the people who put them in power and are only interested in filling their pockets. Waiting for five years  to fire a representative in an election is not a deterrence to these rogues, but they will stop if the people can fire them anytime and no gratuity paid for non performance. A petition is cheaper than an election for the same individual, as constituency we can bar him from contesting the elections. Some American states has the recall law.
