Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President, Harry Kalaba has described as a disaster the floods which have hit Kanyama compound in Lusaka.
Mr Kalaba said what he saw as he toured the disaster prone compound was not pleasing and has since urged the Road Development Agency, the office of the District Commissioner in Lusaka and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to quickly move in and rectify the situation in Kanyama compound.
He said this when he toured the area to get first hand information on the state of floods.
He noted with sadness that Njashishi Road is completely impassable following the heavy down fall in the area.
The Deputy Minister said the situation along Njashishi Road is a sore in the eye, stating that something should be done as a matter of urgency in order to prevent an outbreak of water bone diseases, such as cholera and typhoid.
Mr Kalaba re-iterated that the Patriotic from (PF) government will not sit idle but work round the clock to correct the situation not only in Kanyama but the rest of the country where there are looming disasters.
Meanwhile, Mr Kalaba has praised the office of the Lusaka District Commissioner and the Lusaka City Council for the good drainage workmanship along Los Angel’s Road to Kanyama.
Mr Kalaba said the gesture being exhibited should be encouraged not only in Kanyama but the rest of the townships in the nation.
He stated that his office will continue touring those disaster prone areas across the country and promised that the office of the DMMU will always be proactive in preventing disasters in the country.

Wonderful! continue to tour disaster prone areas throughout the country more money in your pocket while the poor souls will continue to live in disaster prone areas and more tours by our ministers. The people we voted for continue to talk and talk while the electorate continue living in areas where even animals are evacuated.
The solution to Kanyama situation is that the Govt. Should Identify safer areas and relocate some people and create good roads as it is now only visits and visits again which will yield nothing will work. Those who have been to Kanyama will understand what I am talking about. Zimbabwe demolished unlawful structure in Harare the idea was to avoid what has been happening in Kanyama and other areas in Lusaka. Politicians on think about these poor souls’ votes.
These floodings have been an annual occurence. I wonder if the minister knows the geological formation of the Lusaka area? This will give him and the relevant bodies the reason why drainage in that area is problematic. Efficient storm water drains need to be maintained as the water wont seep through so long as these drains are blocked.
Typical of humans without a plan. These floods have been there since the 70s and everytime a minister will describe it as a disaster. You mean you humans are so lazy in the mind you can’t make a plan to end the floods once and for all? Its like your successiVe govts are all sadists that enjoy visiting this disaster area every rainy season. Make a plan!
Exactly my point too. For decades, Kanyama, Misisi, Chibolya and such areas have have been flooded, and each time it happens, the minister or president tours the area to get “first hand information”, and the question is, what do they do with that first hand information? No plan whatsoever ! It’s as sad as it’s annoying!
true that..
For decades, Kanyama, Misisi, Chibolya and such areas have have been flooded, and each time it happens, the minister or president tours the area to get “first hand information”, and the question is, what do they do with that first hand information? No plan whatsoever ! It’s as sad as it’s annoying!
Yes, we have been there before, the best PF can do now is STOP any more developments and allowing people to build houses in these areas until they come up with a lasting solution to these drainage problems. We are a laughing stock wherever you go, little wonder we Africans have failed lamentably even to write our own history, shame…
I really do not understand this. On the one hand the Mayor of Lusaka is claiming that Lusaka City is better of with MMD out of Govt, and on the other hand floods perennially are ravaging Kanyama compound to the point of being declared a disaster. As a matter of fact, driving around our CBD after a downpour is the worst nightmare. Therefore, Is Luska worse of without MMD or it is infact double worse under PF?
He doesn’t look like a PF, I mean Pathetic Fool, to which party does he belong?
who is this Kalaba. I openned the article thinking it was Reinford Kalaba’s comments. He would definately inspire the poor better than this Kalaba in a designer suit, holding one unnecessary position without a clear job description in the VP’s office.
Bushe govt ilebelenga aya ma very wise observations from bloggers here?
Does he know he is a minister
#8 i also thought its kalaba the futballer,it simply means that this minister is not busy, this must be his first outing,Sata check his work, Ba PF planning also helps prevent disasters.
floods in lusaka are an annual event like the kuomboka..everyone sits and just waits for it to happen..then rush in with cameras and good words and tuma worried faces…atleast our Lozi brothers and sisters have a place to go during the floods tho..really these chaps really need to find a lasting solution to this…and i seem to be young enough to remember a certain Mr guy scott prior to the onset of the rains mentioning how no govt resources will be spent on the flood victims mu lusaka makamaka in areas like kwa misizi cook, kanyama etc.so who sent this guy again?ati deputy min.from where?Jokerz
thot its rainford kalaba,ba sata your minions are not known, its unfortunate you are touring the floods instead of prevention.
Why is it that in Zambia we always blame the wrong people and the culprits are left alone. We should be blaming the engineers who have been planning and carrying out the drainage works for the past 5 years. The govt has been releasing money, we should be asking the civil engineers why the problem has not been sorted out, instead of putting the blame on Ministers. Engineering Institution should be leading in condemning sub-standards works being carried out by its engineers. From Roads, bridges, water reticulation, drainage and planning, we have too many sub-standards works done by our Zambian engineers. Ministers only facilitates funding, we should be blaming the engineers for these never ending problems because of sub-standard works.
You are very right but do not forget that Zambia is a country where everyone is comfortable with sub-standard works. Zambians should learn from their neighbours in the South starting with Zimbabwe.
Which engineers in Zambia?
The one who is responsible for funding is responsible for inspection and verification. What do we pay them such hefty salries and allowances for!!!
Same usually story the people have been accustomed to hear, government after government. Can you make a difference now you poor finishers!
