Minister of Health Joseph Kasonde has observed that cancer and other life threatening blood disorders among children were some of the major health problems which Zambia is facing.

Dr. Kasonde said Zambia has for a long time now been experiencing cancer diseases and blood disorders among children.

He said it was unfortunate that the country did not have enough resources to counter these problems.

He was speaking in Lusaka today when Cure 2 Children Foundation Coordinator Lawrence Faulkner paid a courtesy call on him at his office.

Cure 2 Children Foundation is an Italian based organisation supporting children with cancer and blood disorders.

Dr. Kasonde said the visit of Dr. Faulkner to Zambia was a blessing as it will greatly help on how best to handle cancer and blood disorders among the children in the country.

He added that it was important to receive forward looking and thinking people who will make a difference in the fight against cancer and blood disorders.

And Dr. Faulkner said his desire was to ensure that all the children suffering from cancer and blood disorders have access to health facilities.

He also advocated for the development of a strategy to counter blood diseases in children.

Dr. Faulkner, a paediatric haematologist and oncologist, is in the country at the invitation of the Zambian Childhood Cancer Foundation (ZACCAF), which is a group of parents that have had experience that cancer or life threatening blood disorders cause on children.

  1. honestly speaking, am not confortable with most of these donated drugs from these so called co-operating partners given that we do not have the capacity to check and verify the genuiness of these drugs. in our time, its was unheard of that so and so has died due to cancer of ….whatever. and mind you, there were no such nonsense as NGO’s. the onlyNGO’s we had were,”amakole, intungulu, amabungo, incenja, iminyombela, amasuku…the list goeson. DON’T ARGUE YOU WERE NOT THERE!!

    • Seriously wanjipaya with those wild fruits you’ve mentioned.Reminds me of being young in Chililabombwe. The fact is that such deaths could have been occurring but the public was just not being sensitized.Remember the days of doctors’ illegible writing? Our health professionals just didn’t think we lay folk were intelligent enough to understand certain medical conditions ( hope they do now). Am so glad to live in a country (U.S.A) where doctors assume that am intelligent enough to be explained to what is ailing me or my child and what they plan to do about it. Am dreading the time when I’ll be back in Zambia and have to deal with attitude from health professionals.

  2. Minister said they dont have enough resources to counteract problem…NOT TRUE!
1.They have enough bright doctors that want to train in hematology but are supressed. 2: There was Dr Flemming (world renowned) hematologist in z and was frustrated by breathtaking s t u p i di ty and incompetence of z govt (just like this hematologist above will be)
    3. The whole health system is geared against the patient not for the patient, and chaps like minister perpetuate that and encourage it. 4. Above is only possible in an ignorant , uneducated population thats little much better than cattle and demands nothing foritself and accepts all kind of S H I T.

  3. Zambia’s average life expectancy is 39 years old. Zambia has a massive problem. People dying to young. Although Zambian produce life faster than any other country problem solved.

  4. mature is right . most of the drugs that we are getting are still on trial so we should expect terrible side effects. i also remember those good old days. once a child reaches five years the parent is almost sure of the child growing into an adult but these days anytime any day dealth can strike. yes we do not have the capacity to verfy our drugs. our hands are always ready to receive anything from the west because it is good. unfortunately these drugs can not be avoided because they are in food as well.
