LCC intercepts, destroys beef for not satisfying the criteria for public consumption

Share

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) yesterday morning burnt a total of 549.9 kg of beef for not satisfying the criteria for public consumption.

LCC Assistant Public Relations Manager, Mulunda Habeenzu, disclosed to ZANIS that the local authority intercepted the two open vans carrying the meat as they were about to enter Lusaka from Chibombo district.

Mr Habeenzu explained that the drivers of the intercepted vans did not have documents to prove that the meat had been inspected by health authorities and fit for human consumption.

He further explained that the drivers had also contravened the Public Health Act Regulation Number 42 which demands that the vehicle carrying the meat must be of van type, totally covered, braced with iron and be dust and weather proof.

Mr Habeenzu noted that the offenders did not meet this criterion as they were using open vans to transport the meat, thereby exposing the meat to dust.

He explained that after explaining the offences to the two people transporting the meat, they were agreeable and surrendered it to the council.

Mr Habeenzu said the meat has since been burnt and offenders set free.
H e said this is because the Act states that offenders can be set free if they surrender the meat.

Mr Habeenzu cautioned businessmen who deal in food stuffs to avoid inconvenience and adhere to the Public Health Act.

He stated that inspection of meat and other food will not be restricted to Lusaka only, adding that the LCC will work with district councils countrywide to ensure that food being sold to the public meets health standards.

    • Fine, but it is better than cattle rustlers enjoyiong the fruits for which they did not sweat. likely, the cattle were stolen. I hate cattle rustlers.

  1. Ah, are you serious? but zoona ba council you are an embarrassment. 500 KG is about one cow, I have been to some food processing plant that makes my bathroom look like a parlour with all the filth that was there and you burn someone’s capital thereby enhancing poverty by that much. Shame on you.. I want to see you work on the street lights and garbage blai labbish not punishing entrepreneurs or in this case “survivalist businesses”.

  2. I have done that many times. I mean transporting meat in an open van from Chibombo District into Lusaka. Never been caught. I am hearing those rules for the first time even if they say ignorantia juris… Too bad for the guys.

  3. @ No. 4, Billboard – Great point! Food safety is important (!) but the rules are meaningless if traders and consumers are unaware of them. What if anything has LCC done to raise awareness of the rules or even the importance of basic hygiene? Frankly, I don’t want to eat dusty meant and no one else should either!

It’s also seems strange that LCC is the one going around confiscating meat when I would have thought food safety inspections are for ZABS or Ministry of Health. Again, it’s more important to build awareness than to enforce penalties (…..with immediate effect!).

    • Oh thank you.. Thank you so much. I still maintain that if they want to show us that they are working let them come out in the open with their accounts or budget and show us why they fail to provide the basic services such as garbage collection and lighting the streets? They collect money from Billboards, rates, marketeers, buses, (local, intercity, and international, ) and service charges(licensing etc), surely something is really wrong in this organization if all they can do is catch one cow! All markets and bus stations in Lusaka are down right filthy but they generate revenue, but that is where you want the street vendors to be? what do they think those people are happy to sell food in mud and grime? where does their money go? what about the drainage…..awee

  4. That meat was fit for the pot, seriously,we have eaten worse, just go to any boarding school or if you were in boarding at school, why not donate it even to Munda wanga
