Church condemns stealing from accident victims

The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) says the trend of robbing accident victims shows that moral decay has grown rampant in the country.

And Christian Coalition Zambia has described the act as devilish.

Speaking to ZANIS in an interview today, EFZ Executive Director, Rev Pukuta Mwanza, said it is appalling that any person in their right mind could steal from dead or injured people.

Rev Mwanza said such high levels of materialism should never be encouraged as they pose a danger to society.

He called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that culprits involved in such acts are brought to book.

And Christian Coalition General Secretary Bishop, Alick Mbewe, wondered where such a demonic trend came from as hospitality has always been part of Zambian culture.

In an interview with ZANIS, Bishop Mbewe said there is need for police to respond more rapidly when an accident happens if such occurrences are to be prevented.

He called for stringent measures to be matted out on anyone caught in such acts to deter more people from doing the same.

Money and other things like phones have been reported missing by relatives of the recent tragic Chibombo accident victims.

It is alleged that people from surrounding villages robbed the accident victims before police arrived on the scene.

And a Kabwe General Hopital Mortuary attendant was arrested yesterday for allegedly stealing from dead bodies of the accident victims brought to the mortuary.

  1. I passed through the accident scene yesterday, it is near to some lay-by & their are marketeers there, am pretty sure they were among the fist to reach the scene. It just shows the mental disability of what poverty can do

I find it laughable that a clergy of Pukuta Mwanza’s caliber finds this appalling when pentecostal pastors in ZAmbia steal from the poor every sunday with thier posperity messages. How different are you pastors from the people who steal from the dead and injured.

  3. Mortuary attendant with bad nzelu. No wonder you sell water from the mortuary! Suck that cap before he steals mortuary equipment.

  4. THANKS TO THE CHURCH FOR COMING OUT STRONGLY ON THIS ONE. THE CHURCH SHOULD FURTHER ADVOCATE FOR AN APPROPRIATE LAW ON THE REMAINS OF ACCIDENT VICTIMS IF THE CURRENT ONE IS INADEQUATE.

POLICE NEED TO HAVE GOOD INFORMERS AMONGST MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC AND SPECIFIC CASES MUST BE FOLLOWED, CONVICTED AND JAILED.

EQUALLY, SOME POLICE OFFICERS NEED TO ALSO BE ARRESTED, CHARGED AND JAILED.

THAT MORTUARY ATTENDANT IN KABWE MUST BE JAILED TO SEND STRONG SIGNALS.

I LOST A WATCH IN 1974, BOUGHT FOR ME, WHEN MY BROTHER DIED IN A TRAGIC ROAD ACCIDENT.

PEOPLE ON THE SCENE NARRATED WHAT TRANSPIRED. MY WATCH WAS NEVER BROUGHT BACK DESPITE THE POLICE VISITING THE FUNERAL HOUSE, AND EVEN WHEN WE LODGED A COMPLAINT.

  5. God will punish us for using his name in vain. Such vices are not found in a truly christian nation. How can you get rich over a dead persons money?? This is a big curse,

  6. Looting the remains of the dead is very common in most areas of the country. But one should have the conscious that the owner of property is no more and never authorized you to take that property. No wonder some people are running mud! This is not different from the property grabbers of the deceased! Some body never gave you anything when he/she was alive, why should you dare to get property when the owner is no more?
