RB’s questioning continues tomorrow, he sees a prolonged affair

Former President Rupiah Banda will again appear for questioning tomorrow after a joint team of investigators failed to conclude their work today.

A relaxed Mr. Banda emerged from the DEC Headquarters under tight security around 13:37 after a three and half hour grilling by the investigators from the ACC, DEC and the Zambia Police.

Mr Banda was flanked by some MMD senior officials including MMD leader Nevers Mumba who was allowed to accompany the former Head of State inside the DEC offices for questioning.

And in interviews with Journalists, Mr. Banda appealed to MMD cadres to be calm.

Mr Banda also emphasized in a brief address to his sympathizers on the need for Zambia to remain peaceful and united.

“May I ask you to please, please remain calm. We have a duty and a responsibility to keep our country together and peacefully, even under provocation we must remain calm,” Mr. Banda said.

Joint Government Investigative Team Spokesperson Namukolo Kasumpa told journalists that Mr. Banda’s questioning will continue tomorrow at 10 Hours.

Mrs Kasumpa also revealed that no charges had been laid on Mr. Banda as the investigations are still under way.

She however could not state if there will be any charges that will be placed against Mr. Banda.

And Mr. Banda’s lawyer Sakwiba Sikota refused to comment after his client was allowed to leave and appear again tomorrow.

Scores of MMD and UPND officials and their cadres surrounded the DEC Headquarters to give solidarity to the former President.

    • He could have cut down on the frequency had he not snubbed the investigators.

      I don’t care how many times he is asked to go, be it every hour or every day, what will bring peace is to have this issue dealt with and meaningfully concluded.

      RB’s loot in such a short space of time, make Chiluba & Mwanawasa look like amateurs.

      RB is a stubborn thief and will be dealt with as such.

If Saki was a good lawyer he would have a conscience and not try to defend a thief who stole so much in 3 yrs at the expense of dying children in mother Zambia. whether convicted or not RB is a heartless thief …..he should not appeal to our sympathy now!

  14. This man will be sent to jail for both his wrong doings and for Chiluba! He will serve as the example even for MCS. We know that there are hands behind the scenes that have insisted that this should be done. It is not going to end well as Sata cannot play the “RB game of saving Chiluba” while the whole international community will be watching with great interest. Saga continues…!

  16. As much as I despise Sata, I believe Rupiah and his were very corrupt. Prosecution is justified under the right circumstances! I also believe that Mmembe and the Nchinto brothers should not be prosecuting because the trio also have cases to answer. Sadly, my inclination is that the perverse practice of corruption is ac active under PF leadership. Instead of the Banda sons, we have Miles Sampa, GBM, Kabimba, kapoko, emmanuel Mwamba et al. Its deja vu all over again, sick country sick people!! By the way where is the $750 Million?

    • This case was fired up by the British government, becoz Banda also snubbed the British courts after they convicted chiluba, he went and declared him innocent and freed the Kafupi, and when the Zambian govt. brings RB back to face the same chaps he used to free chiluba, he runs back to the same pipo he snubbed…the commonwealth….who are under the British…ba RB has no brain and nowhere to run to, tabakwete mulompwelo nabasungu baleseka fye…….

Hi Bloggers,This now has become very interesting considering the Man Initially refutted to be questioning citing that he has imunity.The best the man should have done with immunity was to appear before the panel who were not in a position to arrest him since he had immunity.Now there he is anwering like a criminal.Soon he will faulter and they will surely send him to jail.Lets wait & see !

  18. The ACC itself needs questioning and prosecution.Why do they have to get Sata’s permission to question his buddies yet everyone else is fair game? Unequal justice is not justice.

  25. I am extremely excited and I had my lunch of Nshima with Fresh beans my appetite was at its best, reason is simple to see the stubborn RB reporting to the team of investigators.
    The man is just an ordinary senior citizen. All the shield of immunity evaporated on Friday 14th of March at 19.00hrs.
    This afternoon I sung Jimmy Cliffs song house of exile. The part I replayed several times goes like this, “now you are like a fish out of water”. Indeed that how RB looks like now that the immunity evaporated.

  30. I have no sympathy for RB. He was so pompous a president who allowed his children and ministers to steal at will. Let him face the law and if found wanting he must be jailed period. He thought by letting Chiluba free he would also not be prosecuted.
    Zambians are tied of seeing their money being stolen by politicians. If Sata and PF are also stealing our money we shall prosecute them come 2016. No person is above the law.

  35. Looked cool? The interrogation was just one hour. Nevers spent the next two consoling and praying for the weeping RB. Sikota was even shocked at the revelations of his client and is actually thinking twice about going further to represent RB.

  36. Whilst we are busy arguing amongst ourselves, the politicians are busy lining their pockets. This news is irrelevant, RB is not running away and the government have all the time in the world to prosecute him if they found he abused state resources. The questions we should be asking is where is our economy going? Zambia will become a sinking boat, (not ship, it’s too big). These guys are causing confusion because they are perfecting ways of abusing resources in the country. The country is running on auto-pilot at the moment.

  37. UPND must be very careful, should any flaws emanate from Mr. Banda’s case, the citizenry will never forgive them. For MMD members, they have an obligation to support Banda. That said, it is a shame that people who dub themselves as ‘lawmakers’ forgot to consider the legal consequences of walking out on a vote. What a shame!

  38. Isn’t there no reason to fear or to worry for anyone?

    The process is as legal as the one under the late President Levy Mwanawasa, SC. Both processes are unlike the illegal imprisonment of first Republican President Dr Kenneth David Kaunda by the late President Frederick Titus Jacob Chiluba.

    If or when former Republican President Rupiah Bwezani Banda is found to be innocent, his hard worked for immunity will be restored by those who lifted it from him.

    So, yes, be as calm as always.

  43. RB should have appeared before investigators with his immunity intact. After that it would have been logically very hard for the govt to sale the immunity removal to Zambians. But it seems his lawyer & inflated ego misled him. He was “SOLD A DREAM” by lawyers who are only interested in mooching off of him.

    It is sad to see how the old man (RB) is such a slow learner. Just like “Vultures” in MMD lied to him that he was popular and will win the election by a landslide; he again chose to listen to very dubious characters for legal advice. He has surrounded himself with a questionable lawyer who knows very little about Zambia’s jurisprudence. While RB is gradually sinking, his so called “international Lawyer” is making off with “bundles of cash” like a highway bandit—sad, isn’t it?

THE CADRES SURROUNDING HIM ARE NOT THERE TO HELP HIM ANSWER THE CHARGES. OTHERS LIED TO HIM THAT HE WILL NOT LOSE HIS IMMUNITY. NOW IT IS WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE. THEY ARE STILL TELLING HIM LIES THET THE CASE WILL DRAG ON FOR A LONG TIME. THAT TOO IS WISHFUL THINKING.
