Chirundu man commits suicide by driving his car into Kafue River.

A 37-year-old man of Mission Compound in Chirundu has committed suicide by driving his car into Kafue River.

A local police source, who confirmed the development to ZANIS in an interview this morning, said Starford Kapusuneli, a Tour Guide at Kanyemba Lodge, died on Saturday around 18:00 hours when he drove his car into kafue river in high speed.

The police, however said the body of Kapusuneli, was later retrieved on Saturday night by a combined team of officers from Chirundu police station with the help of the community members.

And according to the eyewitnesses, who sought anonymity at pontoon in Chirundu where the incident occurred, disclosed in an interview that they saw a Toyota carina registration number ABZ 2813 in a very high speed with lights on and windows closed which was coming from Chirundu town.

They said it surprised them to see a vehicle with such speed driven straight into a river.

They added that it was too late for them to rescue Kapusuneli because the car was already drowned into the deep water by the time they thought of rescuing him.

The eye witnesses said that Kapusuneli was alone in the car and was on a suicide mission.

Meanwhile the deceased’s brother, Richard, narrated that earlier in day Kapusuneli wrote a letter to his family members instructing them on how they should share his properties.

The letter was left with his nephew, John while together with Kapusuneli at the plot where he was building his house.

Richard said Kapusuneli’s letter was delivered to him by John.

He said later in the evening on Saturday, he received a call informing him that Kapusuneli has died in the river.

The body of the deceased is laying in the mortuary at Mtendere Mission Hospital in Chirundu.

And Gift Chanda, a resident who visited the funeral house, said the death of Kapusuneli was a loss not only to the family members but to the entire community.

Mr Chanda, however, advised members of the community to turn to God for guidance in terms of problems, saying that committing a suicide was not a solution.

  1. There are two days that nobody know in his/her life. The birthday and the deathday. We are all on death roll the moment we are born!!Commiting suicide is a sin!Whatever the problems one encounters it is better to ask God for guidance than commiting suicide!!

Take blasphemy out of this please

God is not Musungu. He is a God of love & Mercy. You have a wrong understanding of Musungu. Its not even nice to be called musungu because the term represents evil, pain, anguish, torment and agony.

Musungu is derived from a bemba term ubusungu. Ubusungu is the excruciating pain and torture one experiences from the venom when beaten by a snake.

White people were (are) called musungu because of the mistreatment, exploitation, oppression, irrational, illogical and pertinacious way they treated the local people.

Now you know, so dont feel flattered when called musungu, unless you are the devil himself

  2. Thats what the PF Government has brought, arrests, murder, suicide, brain drain etc MHSRIP atleast he left notes.

  3. Bad spirit looming over our country—-Too much suicide in Zambia, its not the solution mwebantu, a problem shared is a problem half solved… lets not take our lives my people…Cant government give people access to shrinks for free..i think it can work wonders…!!

  4. The fool was a coward, whatever the reasons for his suicide, he also chose a foolish method, someone in his family could need that car, why didnt he just poison himself or better still old fashion way of just hanging himself and save family some resources and also spare public trauma, those who watched him plunge into the river were traumatised!!!

  5. So unfortunate. Just sad that he’s left his spirit in the river….. Bane Chainama is not only for the mentally disturbed….. You acn also go and pay for venting your innermost stressful thoughts, desires and the like. Have a stress free afternoon all.

  6. House / Money (working for Kanyemba Lodge) ? Car?? and u kill yourself?? So surprising, ni kaloba??

  7. Too bad basa! May his soul rest in peace. He’s left a bad spirit in Kafue river indeed. Couldn’t he have done it in some primitive ancient river somewhere “kumyabo ku Lubemba?” Very sad indeed. Anyway my sympathies go to his family.

  9. @Freestyler, you are very foolish! anyway may our Almighty God have Mercy on you for you dnt knw what you are doing…………….

  10. What a painful way to die, drowing is not instant – how desperate was he? Sad that more and more with the break up of village life and communities, people have no one to turn to and we have very few trained counsellors

  11. If the incident happened at the pontoon in Chirundu then that was the Zambezi river. I have never seen the Kafue at Chirundu. Only at Kafue, near Namwala, on the road to Kaoma from Mumbwa and near Kitwe. The reporting is poor quality. The eye witnesses must have been extremely observant to note the number plate of a car travelling at high speed shortly before sunset and to know “the driver was on a suicide mission”. By the way, a car does not ‘drown’ in deep water as it does not breath or have lungs. How long does it take a person to ‘think’ of rescuing another? If the windows of the car were closed as the witnesses stated, it would have taken some time to sink because of bouyancy, even with high speed impact. All the same, a sad state of affairs.
