Share

A Ndola football fan Phyllis Chifunda who was on Wednesday hit by a stray bullet during the sale of tickets for this Saturday’s 2014 World Cup between Zambia and Sudan has lost her left kidney.

Chifunda, 33, of house number1817, Pamodzi Township was hit by a bullet as police tried to disperse a crowd that stormed Kansenshi Post Office.
Ndola central hospital public relations officer Sheona Chalimbana said Chifunda who was operated on Wednesday remains in the Intensive Care Unit after her kidney was removed because it was hit by bullet.

“She is still in the ICU because her kidney was removed; it was affected by the same bullet. She was operated last night around 18 to 19 hours, so she is in ICU,” Chalimbana said.

And Copperbelt police commissioner Mary Tembo has ordered the detention of the police who fired the live bullet only identified as Inspector Chibesa.

Four officers were manning the ticket sales at Kansenshi police station include Chibesa himself from the Paramilitary Unit in Ndola, asergeant Lilando, a Constable Mulenga and fellow constable Chileshe.

  1. Jail the cop who fired that live bullet. This story has spoiled my day.I wish you a quick recovery Phyllis.

    • @zebige
The cop involved had instructions from `above` to shot in order to control the people just in case it turned into a full scale riot, so it will be unfair to jail the poor guy withot taking up the issue with the `above authority`

    • This late for me, but learning this is disturbing. People were beating at church where was the police.

    • @DIP STICK
Like or not `Mr clever folishi man`,, the police today are red alet on their tip toe, they know there is generally silent unhappines among the people and the police, know that, with instructions from above,,, any kind of riot will be shot at…thats also why political rallies are banned today in zambia

´Mr folishi clever man… read my comment again am not in support of the shotting of that poor girl..what am saying we now have two poor victims on our hands..the cop acting on instruction from above and the poor girl are both victims,,,so the system and instruction from `above` have failed the people

    • @zebige
dead serious my bro!!!.. i dont see how a trained policeman can shot live bullet without instruction from above,

    • @Ndobo is right, how did an officer access bullets in a Zambian station? One of the 2 presidents authorised, either Kabova Sata or Drunken Lungu issued instructions.

  2. I hope some well meaning lawyer will help this lady sue the State and the policeman in his individual capacity.

  3. they should transplant the cops kidney to the lady…its only fair that she is given back ‘her’ kidney and the cop should loose his coz he did not act in a proffesional way

    • As much as that may look like justice. The thing is its not any kidney that can fit anyone, they have to get something matching including blood types etc.

  4. Ndobo, you are wrong..no way he could have been instructed to fire a live bullet..why not tear gas?..you are very unknowledgeable..uninformed

    • @Dora siliya
Am not supporting the cop,,, What saying is that the cop aimed and shot at the people with instruction from `above` like all policemen operate today in zambia,

And you never know, maybe ZP hasnt got teargas canisters in stock,, they just have live bullets reserved for MMD and UPND

    • Ndobo you are right, how often do we hear the ‘instructions from above’ when juniors are forced to act unlawfully.

  5. This is very disturbing. Why use live ammunition for this. The Govt has to act swiftly and compansate this young lady on top of a public appology. What has happened to rubber bullets and tear gas?

  6. The state should without wasting time evacuate the woman to better medical facilities in S.Africa or the UK. The money is there because we know millions of dollars are being wasted all over the place. If GRZ and political leaders can be taken abroad for knee checkups and oral surgery at tax payers expense why not this innocent woman.

  7. It’s too late and sad for her. These trigger happy criminals hav gotten used to shooting pipo lyk they are licensed to kill! That criminal who fired the gun must be hanged!

  8. The policeman who fired the gun is an inspector, heads should roll here including the IGs. Its these stup1d brainless women everywhere Sata has put to head our police. Phyllis you should sue FAZ and ZP don’t accept any outside settlements.

  9. Too much marijuana our officers. I’m very much sure if random tests could be taken, 70-80 per cent can test positive

  10. One wonders what “Crowd Control manual” they are currently using at Lilayi Police Training School. Its high time Ministry of Home Affairs invested in ZP as these officers only have one trick for crowd control…its tear gas canisters and gun fire to disperse crowds. Edgar Lungu ask for assistance from the UK the are well versed defusing in crowds safely with great restrain.
I hope those incompetent empty suits in Football House are taking note this as there are modern methods of moving tickets. I hope this girl lawyers up its a shame I’m not in Zambia at the moment I would have assisted her with legal fees…..these lazy morons at ZP and FAZ need to pull up their socks and wake up.

    • But thats Neo-colonialism, must we always go to our enemy for help.. Oh white man we can’t run the country, can you please ‘COME BACK’ and sort this mess out. No no no!!! That won’t work. Firstly, the white man will ask Z.P to pay millions of pounds as he is greedy, secondly, ZP do have the capability to police our own people, a white man won’t have a clue. Thirdly, for a long time the Police in Ndola may not have had experience of dealing with large crowds, they v done it before, but in the 70s-80’s when the FAZ league was active on the C.B.. with experience ZP will soon improve, look at the Liverpool disaster in the UK, people are still angry with the UK police for causing “hundreds” of deaths of soccer fans in the 80’s…so you see even they had to learn through their own…

  11. pliz ba LT there is NO paramilitary unit in Ndola. paramiltary is strictly based in Lsk unless dispatched for an operation.

    • That police officer must be castrated, am very sure he must be a junior officer the so called constables am saying so because these junior officers seem to not knowing their job, they rude as if they are soldiers but they damn POLICE SERVICE. Poor civil servants.

  13. its a shame for sure.its like queing to buy zesco units,Faz find other means of salling tickets please kwati ni mu ma 60’s sure.now look at what you caused for refusing to think.

  14. Any Policeman or soldier who shoots an unarmed person must be have his name and address published. “Name and shame” is the new game.

  15. How can a bullet go astray? The ***** shot at the crowd but the twisted press is trying to make it appear accidental. I don’t know who to fear more: the trigger happy police or the criminals.

  16. foolish Zambian government that does not care about people’s lives. what is the government doing really? can Zambian afford to hold Africa cup? if just on tickets people are dying? we are by far civilized. bullet go astray? really! really! who’s going to pay for this?
Of which I know one day I will sit on the president sit and Sata I should not find you by then. how can a bullet go astray? untrained police? Mr Chilufya should not die or I will hunt you for life. foolishness

  17. I think faz and the police shud be held accountable especially faz. Buying a ticket now isa shum unless you go to a koponya. Zesco handled it well not the post. Grz shud investigate who got the tickets, how many were given to the post offices and how long it took for them to finish, how many pipo bought from the post offices etc forensic audit.

    Faz is becoming big headed

  18. Iam told we as a country have advanced much, but what still surprises me is the use of internet in our country. For sure imwebantu nakugura cabe football tickets ni malaini. In this era people in their bedrooms just a click of your finger all starts to happen.Am not saying everyone to afford this no but if some did then lessen on kutantamina bane.

    • @chikubabe mwana you know the mentality of the people ruling our country at the moment, very backward..always thinking of themselves, so twaku lafwa fye ifi fiine..they don’t care at all!! Because as you rightly suggest, the GRZ can open ticket sales, to internet cafes all over the city for those without the priveledge of a computer /internet. Also, they can strategically place retailers of tickets in the townships, say in Masala, Pamodzi, Town etc…In the same way we have talk time Tuntemba, our people must be given the opportunity to be entreprneurs and sale these thousands of tickets, unlike restricting sales with Post Office which is GRZ controlled, therefore, Pali umodzi wamene akudya Ndalama! But these guys think first of themselves, Zambians last.
