THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has backed Government over its stance to compel Zambeef to withdraw all its imported beef products from sale until further investigations in the matter.
ZACA executive secretary Muyunda Ililonga in stating the association position on a consumer point of view said Government was right to in institute further investigations in the Zambeef matter while pursuing legal action.
Mr Ililonga said in an interview yesterday that the Zambeef saga had opened a fresh chapter for the country to discuss how the food-chain process was being contaminated by various foreign matters.
“Firstly, we want to commend the health authorities for detecting the aromatic aldehydes in the imported Zambeef products and as a consumer watchdog, we feel Zambian consumer have the right to be protected against any food product that is harmful to their health,” Mr Ililonga said.
He said ZACA was of the view that Government widens the investigations to also include other companies in similar business of imported food products considering that consumers had no capacity to detect harmful chemicals such aromatic aldehydes on their own.
“If health inspections can be widened further, it is possible we might find that more culprits other than Zambeef in this matter,” he said.
Mr Ililonga called for serious scrutiny in the manner food was being processed, packaged and distributed in the country in order to safeguard the health of consumers against ailments related to food contamination.
The ZACA executive secretary urged Government to expedite the health investigations and prosecution of Zambeef over the revealed aromatic aldehydes saying this was important if the company was to have chance to be heard in court and defend itself in the matter.
Don’t stop at zambeef because even street vendors use aromatic aldehyde s .carry out a check up in city market and also chisokone market in kitwe.They are all doing the same thing.
very true. fish vendors are using this chemical too. if govt is truly concerned, they crack down on these marketeers. After all, the majority of people buy from markets not zambeef.
Larger companies need to be held accountable and were is government destroying these meats. we have nothing on this. where are all these products going.

Zambeef saga! can PF be very strong on these guys. they have been exploiting us small scale cattle ranchers. They offer us 14.00 dead weight per Kg when they sell at an average of 36 to 52 per kg. the whole Zambeef to me is a fraud persuated by the European union. where on earth can a company borrow US$500million. its a perverse & continuity of capital friegtht. i wish all Zambians can stop buying all meats from Zambeef. am very annoyed with them.
@Yakuna, Zambeef is capitalising on your laziness and ignorance. Demand for beef is zambia is very high. As you hav mentioned zambeef sells at twice or thrice the price you sell them. Why cant you wake up and open a small butchery and start getting a good profit margin from your animals. Start slowly by advertising in your area that you will slaughter 1 animal on a prticular day and pick up from there……enterprenueship starts from such small steps…next it will be 2 animal, next you are ….eee
Do you know that NAPSA, Madison Insurance and BOZ pension Scheme are some of the major shareholders in Zambeef. If it collapses the pension of all civil servants and other private sector employees will be gone. We shall have destitutes in the country.

In the meantime how many people are employed by Zambeef and does the Government have alternative jobs for them. They have denied FQM and KCM

Why was I deceived to think that the beef products sold by ZAMBEEF originated from Zambia? Had I known they also sold imported beef, I would have avoided buying meat from them. Now it’s back to truly local beef or none at all.
Gundixy, Zambeef only import liver, kidneys, ox-tails..people are being misled into thinking all their meat is imported. All imported products have been removed from their shelves pending investigations. That is why Zambeef are still able to operate as normal.

They is nothing new about Zambeef scam it is a known fact that even marketeers in lusaka’s soweto market kitwe’s chisokone market and other markets are using this chemicals to preserve there meat and fish.Let us not pretend everybody knows about this.
