Ndola local authority increase burial fees by over 100 percent

NDOLA residents have expressed concern over the local authority’s decision to hike burial fees by over 100 percent.

But Ndola City Council public relations officer Louise Thole justified the council’s decision to hike burial fees to cover operational and maintenance costs for cemeteries.

The local authority has adjusted upwards burial fees from K5 to K15 for Kantolomba and Kawama cemeteries and from K50 to K100 for Kantolomba and Kawama special cemeteries.

The local authority has also increased burial fees at Mitengo cemetery from K300 to K500 while mourners at Kansenshi cemetery will now be required to pay K15,000 from K5,000 to bury their dead relatives and friends.

The residents said in a walk-in interview in Ndola yesterday that the local authority should first improve cemeteries before increasing burial fees.

Victor Mwewa, a resident of Twapia, said it is unfair for the local authority to hike burial fees because some people are too poor to afford the new fees.

“Twapia is near Mitengo and look at the fees there, it’s now K500. How can someone raise this money if they do not work,” Mr Mwewa said.

He said burial fees at Mitengo cemetery should be reasonable like those of Kantolomba and Kawama cemeteries.

But Mrs Thole said the local authority decided to increase burial fees to cover operational and maintenance costs for cemeteries.
She said the decision to increase burial fees was made at a full council meeting last week.

Mrs Thole said the local authority decided to hike the fees for Kansenshi cemetery from K5,000 to K15,000 to discourage residents from burying their dead there because the cemetery is almost full.
“We want to reserve that area for very important people, hence our decision to hike the fees so much,” she said.

Mrs Thole said the burial fees the Ndola City Council is charging are the lowest on the Copperbelt.

  2. The local authorities want to reserve Kansenshi cemetary for important people. Which are those people who can be important when dead? Once dead one is dead and the final destination is the ground.

  5. More more in the pockets and now we are pick pocketing the dead. This is the Ndola Council for you. The Council has been robbing the people of Ndola ever since the Council was dominated by the PF Councillors. The council collected money from would be developers for the New Hillcrest plots in 2008 but up to now there are no roads, no water, and no sewer lines. When the PF came into power, all hell broke lose. The new Councillors demarcated the plots and now you find plots where roads were supposed to be or where the water pipes were supposed to pass. Some plots are right under the main sewer line running along Kafubu river. Some Councillors are now selling the plots they acquired dubiously. Kindly find out how many plots does the area Councillor has. It is a disaster

  6. That’s what happens when people of low esteem assume positions of authority. “Very important people”?

Seriously, this uneducated moron should be fired and remain unemployed until she understands the equality of all people.

Can she name these “important people” for whom the cemetery is reserved? Will she herself qualify as an important person?
I bet she also considers herself a true Christian. Go to hell, devil’s spawn.
