ZAMBIA has recognised the current administration in Libya as the official government representing the people of the North African country, Tourism and Arts minister Sylvia Masebo has said.

Ms Masebo said on Saturday evening during dinner hosted by the Libyan government for the delegates to the ongoing United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly here that Zambia was cooperating with the new administration in Libya.

Libya has been under the new administration since the ousting and ultimate killing by the National Transitional Council (NTC) of former leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi who had ruled for 42 year.

The NTC last year handed over power to the General National Council which had been elected as parliament but countries particularly in Africa have been silent on whether or not they recognise the new administration.

Ms Masebo said the issue was recently tabled before cabinet where it was agreed to indorse the new administration as government of Libya and the two countries were cooperating well in many aspects.

“I want to say that Libya and Zambia share a lot in common. We are happy that peace and stability seems to be entrenching and I would like to say that Zambia has actually recognised the Libyan Government,” she said.

She said it was important that African countries supported each other and use the UNWTO General Assembly as a platform to support the Libyan people.

Earlier, UNWTO secretary general Taleb Rifai expressed happiness for Libya’s first ever participation in the tourism general assembly as well as hosting the first dinner for the gathering.

He noted that Libya was a great country although it had not pronounced itself as one of the most important destination in the Mediterranean region.

“Libya is a great country that has been absent from our scene for over 50 years,” he said. “Forty something years, we have not heard from Libya, we have not seen them and they have not pronounced themselves as one of the best destinations in the southern Mediterranean.”

However, Dr Rifai who conducted a two-day visit to Libya last year was glad to note that the country had decided to come back with renewed ambition in its quest for development.

Following the turmoil, challenges were still lying ahead for Libya and Dr Rifai called on the countries to offer necessary support as friends in order to overcome the difficulties.

“Challenges are still ahead; you should not expect that Libya or any other country that has passed through whatever it has passed through is going to get over its challenges overnight,” he said.

Libya Tourism Minister Abdel Samee Mahboub said Libya was happy to take part in the UNWTO general assembly and host the dinner for the delegates.

  1. Is the announcement of our international diplomatic missions recognized by Zambia not supposed to be the work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs not Tourism and arts??? #via boggling#

    • there are some misguided people who still think that Ghadafi will come back from hell and will run Libya again hahahhahha

  2. Shadreck Sakala,in Zambia we have no order man and it’s for that reason that we have Deputy Minister Sampa always talking like he is at Finance Ministry

  3. “Ms Masebo said the issue was recently tabled before cabinet where it was agreed to indorse the new administration as government of Libya…….”

I doubt that the issue was tabled, I sense it’s more like when they sat and unanimously came up with the name Gabon National Disasters Heroes Stadium. They don’t strike me as people who wants to sit and painstakingly weigh pros and cons. Ifintu ni bwangu seems to be their operative philosophy.

  4. makes no sense to me for a Minister of Tourism to be making such statements. She should have stuck to tourist-related issues. Such pronouncements are very very sensitive and as my man ‘Wantanshi’ has just tuned, no way ever was this tabled at ANY meeting. This is all Sylvia since in Zed now its like all Ministries are mini-countries and the Ministers presidents of these Mini countries while my man at Plot one takes a ceremonial role like the Queen of England.

  5. Only in Zambia where the vice President can not act as President in the absence of the President. Minister of Tourism can issue official diplomatic statements the President and Minister of foreign affairs can be mute….!!

  6. It would have been most appropriate if the Minister of Foreign Affairs made this pronouncement. That is the procedure. One wonders in what capacity Masebo talked about such an issue that borders on diplomatic relations, an area not part of her jurisdiction. Maybe she was authorised by cabinet. But then, what is the purpose of having the ministry of foreign affairs?

  7. MASEBO IS A BIG LIAR JUST LIKE HER COUNTERPART KAMBWILI. ITS NOT TRUE THAT THE LIBYAN ISSUE WAS TABLED BEFORE CABINET AND VERY SOON MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND COOPERATIVES BOB SICHINGA IS GOING TO SAY ZAMBIA DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE CURRENT LIBYAN REGIME .THESE GUYS DON’T MEET AS A CABINET AND DON’T HAVE JOB DESCRIPTIONS NO WONDER WE HAVE PF PARTY CADRES PRONOUNCING GOVERNMENT POLICIES.
