MMD Mafinga member of parliament Catherine Namugala says Zambian leaders have not served the people well.
And Namugala said that the PF government had failed to address the high levels of poverty among the poor majority because it has forgotten about the people who voted them into government.
Contributing to the Presidential speech in Parliament yesterday Namugala said that Zambian leaders were irresponsible collectively.
“We are irresponsible leaders; we have allowed foreigners to get land because we are not thinking about our future generation. Now is the time for us to correct what we all know is wrong. As leaders we have not served them (people) well, we have not served them well because even the little space they occupy at the market is being taken over by foreigners. We have forgotten about the people who elected us into government,” said Namugala.
She said that the Patriotic Front in government had been talking about achievements in the past two years which includes the Eurobond and the link 8000 project, which she said was not enough for a government that campaigned and formed government on the premise of poverty reduction.
Namugala said that the PF was failing, adding that it was only fair that its leadership admits its failures as a result of not having the capacity to manage projects being financed by the Eurobond.
“That PF government must admit that there is no capacity to manage the Eurobond so as to create economic value to benefit the people of Zambia. It is sad that we as a nation can borrow and fail to fully utilise a loan which is an opportunity to impact poverty facing our people,” she said.
She said that it did not make sense for the people of Zambia to continue living in abject poverty years after independence, adding that the over dependency on minerals was no longer sustainable for the nation’s economic development.
“The PF has a duty to ensure that Zambians do not continue living in squirrel not now and not in the next 40 years to come. We need to put resources towards sector that can help to grow the country’s Growth Domestic Product (GDP).
She challenged the PF in government to ask themselves what achievements they can account for in the past two years of being in power and how they have impacted the livelihoods of poor Zambians.
And Namugala said that Zambians were living in greater poverty now than they did under the MMD government.
“Have you forgotten about them, have you forgotten that because you have broken your promises the people have no faith in political leadership? Our people are living in worse poverty than they did before you took office, our people in Mafinga are proud that they did not vote for PF,” said Namugala.
She said that the biggest challenge of the PF had been listening to the people of Zambia, “The greatest beneficiaries for good leadership are the people of Zambia. Therefore the PF must listen to what we are saying because we are in contact with the people when you are their being trapped by the benefits of power.
And we want to remind them about the promises they have broken, the PF promised that they would ensure equity in the distribution of land which they have not done.”
she is speak sense and she is better than Nawakwi who want job from PF. she was better minister of tourism than Masebo.
Did MMD finish poverty?
She is talking absolute rubbish !!
As if MMD even cared about peoples welfare!!?? They were too busy enriching themselves
Poverty is destined to exist in our generations in Africa
I know this, and ms NaMugala does as well
Thanks
Now you are talking for Zambians. You are making yourself useful to the critical mass of authentic leadership we are building against counterfeits.
You can never learn how to end poverty from “7guns and a cressida” types.
she is an ambivalent useful *****. One moment she is dining with PF the next moment she is criticising them. Shame Catherine!
Good presentation Hon. Namugala, that`s what we call representing the people.
Namugala is the greatest failure i’ve ever seen, let her keep her mouth shut.
MMD WAS IN POWER FOR 20 YEARS.
HOW MANY CLINICS DID YOU BUILD?
HOW MANY ROADS DID YOU CONSTRUCT?
HOW MANY CARRIAGE WAYS DID PLAN FOR?
HOW MANY TOWNSHIP ROADS DID YOU REFURBISH? ETC
DID YOU ERADICATE POVERTY?
To refresh you mind Sata was part and parcel mmd for ten solid years and he was in unip as well for many years.
namugala you would have been a better and respected person if you had said this during mmd but you stood akimbo and just ate, what difference does your statement make today when you in opposition and a mare mp to the arrogant pf
well done namungala bravo now u are talking
Now this t she no longer has access to government resources she thinks poverty has increased on her personal level! Madam this is the situation you left as MMD. Infact PF is putting measures in place to reduce the mess you left. Watch this space by 2015 when HE MCS would have started speaking
some of these statemenets awe sure. How can you surely end 40years of chronic poverty in 2years???
You can never end poverty in 2yrs but at least you start by showing that you’re laying that foundation. The PF don’t even know where to find the stone and mortar and they don’t even have the trench areas marked.
“PF GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED TO END POVERTY” – NAMUGALA
Which government including your corrupt MMD has managed to end poverty in Zambia?
For the first ten years of the MMD government which Ukwa was part of nothing much happened, but under the able leadership of the late LPM and RB things were moving in the right direction. Just compare the price of mealie meal when RB left office and the price of the commodity now.
May be she meant reducing or even a plans to reduce poverty is welcome.PF start planning towards poverty alleviation now.Technocrates are plenty create willingness at Govt level.
intelligent gal..but which camp are you on?
Pf you cant continue fooling Zambians all the time.Poor Zambians should sacrifice for what?. Reduce the number of cabinet ministers, unplanned for projects, stop creating unnecessary bye elections which are a drain to our national treasury. Much as I supported and advocated for change I m equally disappointed with the way Pf is handling national issues. Its never to late go back to the drawing board and fulfill your campaign promises.May God give wisdom and good health to our leaders.
You can not end 40 years poverty in 2 years. Ba Namugala MP we are waiting for Chkiwanda’s piece so that we can discuss the 2 Presido speech and Budget together.
1) Fertilizer is not yet here how do you end poverty with so much uncertainties?
2) 2 More by-elections what a drain on resources
3) Eurobond wish it was UPND who got that money. MMD would have shared it among Ministers, PF no idea how to use it. USD$120million meant for ZRL still sitting in some account
4) Copperbelt so called investors especially KCM taking Zambians for granted all contracts are owned by some other Indian Investors
5) No hostels space for CBU and UNZA
6) 20% Contracts to Zambian companies so that 80% can go out of the country is this poverty reduction program??
In my opinion, poverty reduction in Zambia is wider than perceived. For me, if poverty in the country has to be reduced, everyone has to be involved in the crusade and not just leaving it to the government in power, as the current perception spells it. It will not do us by always politicking. Of course the government plays a major role in its policy direction but all and sundry in the country must play a role, including the so-called poor people themselves, Opposition Parties, CSOs etc. There is too much talking and no action in Zambia. Ghana, for example, is where it is today, not by accident but through sweat and toil, where even former President Rawlings literary went out on farms and participated in physical cultivating the land. Because of this, today Ghana is an envy of all in Africa
Zambia, unfortunately is doing the opposite of what Zimbabwe is doing when it comes to land empowerment. Every country’s emancipation struggle is based on the ego to own land by its citizenry, but if your own government does not see it that way, then there is absolutely something wrong in the government policy direction. I tell you, Zimbabweans are feeling the pinch from the Western induced sanctions they are going through right now, but I bet you, Zimbabweans will be the happiest peoples on the African continent to President Mugabe’s land empowerment policy for his people. Zambians, unfortunately will be the most unhappy and will forever remain destitutes in their own country because, like Hon Mugala put it, our leaders do not see any reason to empower us, even in markets.
I call on all Zambians to wisen up and vote for leaders who will have Zambia at heart in 2016. It may be difficulty to identify them but you may know them by their actions. Desperation is one of them. Corrupting you during elections is another.
Sexy woman
Any nation that depends on others will forever be impoverished.self reliance is key.poverty reduction is possible through entreprenurship and farming, opportunities may come but we may not take advantage because of inability to translate opportunity due to poor entreprenurship skills and poor Govt approach to empowerment.good example is maize exports via Govt to Govt which doesn’t add value to the Zambian house hold but to Neighbouring states…What do you want God to do for you Minerals you give to George bush, maize Comrade Mugabe gets at the expense of our entreprenurs….govt please allow wider participation in mineral and agric industries next year.
Look who is talking! PF have only been in Office for two years and you want them to end poverty in that short space of time when you were in power for 20 years and poverty is till here?
Both the USA and the UK are experiencing poverty even though they are looked to as rich nations. People now depend on foodbanks to survive.
Talk about something else Namugala.
@gundix the food bank in the region is currently Zambia apart from southafrica, yet we can’t take advantage of the grain export to empower ourselves but Govt to Govt transactions. An effort to empower citizens with export contructs will reduce poverty, every journey starts with a step…
That’s what we say ,’Taking pipo for granted”. Ms Namugala, dat is being extremely hypocritical. We have not 4gotten how evil was mmd in govt.Though 0 leaders must learn 2 put their pipo first.’Awee mwandini’, wen u’re not in govt u seem 2 b wiser
