Shoprite workers countrywide have gone on strike. The workers are demanding among other things improved conditions of service, salary increments and dismissal of some top management officials whom they accuse of being incompetent.

A check by Radio Musiotunya at Musiotunya square Shopping Mall in Livingstone found the workers loitering outside the shop while others were singing and chanting slogans demanding more money in their pockets.Cstomers, mostly tourists were seen stranded as they didn’t have an alternative place to shop.

Local union representatives who were found at the scene refused to talk to reporters for fear of being victimized.

In Kitwe workers were seated outside the shop. Some Shoprite workers said that they have had decided to go on strike because of the company’s failure to implement the revised minimum wage and the rampant casualisation being perpetrated by the management at the company.

“Our patience should not be mistaken for being dull or ignorant. So today, we are on strike because of failure to implement the revised minimum wage and the rampant casualisation. We want these issues to be addressed,’ said the striking Shoprite workers.

And Labor and social security Minister, Fackson Shamenda appealed to the workers to be peaceful as the negotiations are still on going .Mr Shamenda said the workers have the right to fight for what is rightfully theirs but should do it in a calm and mature manner.

  1. Ba LT.How can can you say that tourists are stranded as there is no alternative place to shop.Surely are you telling us that Livingstone only has Shoprite?.For your own information Livingstone is not as backward as you potray it to be.There are plenty of alternatives including SPAR.If anything shops like SPAR are meant for tourists and because they look after their staff well you will never hear them closed due to strikes. So please learn to report responsibly and factual even if you are on the Shoprite payroll.

    • Wakumelo, LT is going the watchdog way in the peddling of untruths and sensationalization. Here in Ndola it is simply more sales for Spar & Pick ‘N’ Pay. Shoprite are slave drivers and they deserve this strike. Our brothers and sisters in their chain of shops work long hours for peanuts. For you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!

  2. The workers are justified to take industrial action cause their managers are not listening. These people just work too much for peanuts. Viva workers and down with exploiters.

  3. In South Africa where shoprite has many shops they don’t go on strike, but in Zambia everytime shoprite workers are always on strike whats the problem. May the environment is uncoduicieve for investors.

    • No that is not true! the same problem occurring in Zambia have happened several times in Rsa and there is and they might be no solution at all this Toyi Toying! why? because the Shoprite Management has in general policy since Apartheid of not burdening itself with various obligations for a permanent employee, as their policy is to pass those benefits to the consumers! hence Shoprite can buy an item at 1kwacha,per say, and sell it for K1,O4! the game IN there is VOLUME,the more consumers buy the more stabilizer profit to keep it afloat! HENCE forget to make Carrier with Shoprite, its strength lays in Casual labor! It is just a temporary refuge for those seeking green future!

  5. Long hours of work but get slave wages……I may not cast the blame on Shoprite RSA
the big stumbling block here are the Zedian managers who assume that zambian workers can survive on mergre pay as they live with their friends and extended families. But who rents those small flats in the surbubs?we have to come out of this mess. These workers may not even be contributing to any pension scheme…What a shame!
