Zambia without Chris Katongo for Egypt friendly

Share

Zambia will be without striker Christopher Katongo for Thursday’s friendly against Egypt at the Cairo Air Force Stadium.

The Zambia striker and captain is said to be still stuck at his China base trying to sort out a contractual issue with promoted Henan Jinaye following the expiry of his contract in October.

This will be the second successive match that Katongo will miss a Zambia engagement after skipping the November 6 friendly against Jordan in Doha citing the same issue.

Katongo is the second player to withdraw from Thursdays friendly after Dutch-based striker Jacob Mulenga.

The FC Utrecht forward pulled out of the game after sustaining an injury in a league game last Saturday.

Meanwhile, striker Emmanuel Mayuka of French club Sochaux and midfielder Chisamba Lungu from Russian club FC Ural are expected Wednesday night in Cairo.

Goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene of Mamelodi Sundowns is due in at 01h30.

Zambia face Egypt seeking their first win over The Pharaohs in 17 years.

Chipolopolo’s last win over Egypt was during the 1996 Africa Cup quarterfinals that they won 3-1.

Since then, Zambia has lost five and drawn two games against their arch nemesis as they head into the two sides’ 22nd ever meeting from which Chipolopolo has won just six times.

  1. If there was a better time to form a new team its now and also the best time to hire a proper new manager not this PE tutor’s assistant. Nigeria took the bold decision look at where they are today.
    Wake up FAZ!!

  2. Chriss Katongo, Jacob Mulenga, Mbesuma, Chintu Kampamba, Noah Chivuta, James Chamanga, Kalaba and Kennedy Mweene are in the evening of their football carears. We may need them on serious cup games because of their experience but when playing friendlies like this one i really don’t see any logic in calling them. Friendly games are meant to find and develop new talent. Our team has no strikers. How i wish this new coach could work extra hard on this.

    • FAZ please do not lose time with Patrice….Find a qualified coach in Good time. If you are interested in Patrice , let him continue as a physical trainer not First team coach.. We have the money to get the best in the world according to Kambwili.. Why don’t you take advantage of the Government good will…Please no Patrice for Chipolopolo……

    • You must have a very good reason for you to force the most highly decorated captain into retirement. Katongo will retire only when he wants to. If you hate him, just go and cry yourself to sleep.

    • My tivities should helpbrother , you are right on sport! these tired legs must rest. Many options though not perfercted are available.

We need a thorough search to achieve this. Footbal centres through schools and other ac

  3. @ jay jay, you think Nigeria will defend the Acon? far from it. how could a big team like them fail to qualify to the 2012 edition which this guy you call a PE teacher won? anyways, so long they cant beat Zambia, we are cool with it. GO MIGHTY ZAMBIA GO!!!!!!!!!!!

    • You don’t know what you are talking about. Last week Nigeria lifted the FIFA under 17 world cup. The performance of those young Nigerians was owesome. Their current senior team has improved so much. They won the 2013 AFCON and are qualifying for the Brazil 2014 World cup. The Nigeria of old is back therefore I wonder what you mean by saying they won’t be able to defend AFCON cup in 2015. You are just a shallow minded man.

  4. DEFENDER Stoppila Sunzu has been declared ready for Zambia’s international friendly match against Egypt tomorrow and striker Emmanuel Mayuka has been recalled to the squad.

And Chipolopolo coach Patrice Beaumelle has said he was expecting a good result over the seven-time African champions.
Sunzu, who was reportedly injured during a TP Mazembe league match against Lupopo, was part of yesterday training at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka together with club-mate Nathan Sinkala.
Noah Chivuta, Emmanuel Mbola and Rodger Kola were also part of yesterday’s training, while Kennedy Mweene and Christopher Katongo are scheduled to fly directly from their respective bases.
Striker Collins Mbesuma is already in Cairo where he remained after his team, Orlando Pirates’ CAF Champions League defeat to Al…
