Veep dismisses calls for Zambia’s suspension from Commonwealth

Vice President Dr Guy Scott

Vice President Guy Scott has said Zambia was not among some Commonwealth member countries that were allegedly violating human rights.

Reacting to calls by the Coalition for the Defence of Democratic Rights (CDDR) which comprises opposition political parties and civil society for Zambia to be suspended for allegedly violating human rights, Dr. Scott said the opposition political parties and the media were free in Zambia.

He explained that the perceived restrictions were those that have been put in place so as to maintain law and order in the country and can therefore, not be deemed as a violation of human rights.

He told journalists in an interview in Sri Lanka where he is attending the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM-2013) that the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) also faced restriction as a party when it was still in the opposing side.

The Vice President said with this background, he did not expect Zambia to be discussed during the CHOGM especially that her issues had not gone to the Commonwealth ministerial action group.

And Dr. Scott has expressed optimistic that the CHOGM-2013 will be successful.

He said the meeting was likely to address the issue of Zimbabwe and Gambia who have since left the Commonwealth association.

“Some might think that Zimbabwe issue should be discussed, but others may think it is not necessary. Zimbabwe cannot help being a member of Commonwealth as it still sucks from Commonwealth as it is a neutral member,” he said.

Dr. Scott said the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting allows heads of governments, who are Presidents and Prime Ministers, to discuss several issues that affect their countries and other member states.

The CHOGM is held every two years to enable leaders of Commonwealth countries come together to discuss global and Commonwealth issues and to decide on collective policies and initiatives.

Every CHOGM is jointly organized by the host country and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

These biennial meetings serve as the principal policy and decision-making forum to guide the strategic direction of the association.

  1. VERY FUNNY. SHAME UPON HH, SAKI, AND HIS MINIONS. IT WAS CHILDISH OF THEM TO START A SMEAR CAMPAIN AGAINST A DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED GVT AS IF THERE ARE NO EMBASSIES AND REPUTABLE NGOs WATCHING. IF THEY HAD SUPPORT FROM NGOs SUCH AS AMESTY INTERNATIONAL, THEIR CRY COULD HAVE BEEN HEARD BUT THEY DECIDED TO FORM A FAKE NGO JUST TO ADVANCE THEIR CAUSE.WHAT A SHAME!! WHAT AN EMBARASEMENT. THAT STUPID LAWYER HAS EVEN GONE UNDER.

    • Those advocating suspension or sanctions of any kind against our country don’t care about the welfare of the citizens they claim to represent.

They have no shame, They lack patriotism, They have amassed stolen wealth from the poor. they are arrogant respect for others is alien to them. They simply Hungry Hyenas, political and social-economic opportunism is what they relish. They have no guiding principles. no ideology. They are non-descript.

They have nothing meaningful to contribute to the country.

Cop them of as they are a malignant cancerous tumor to our country

    • @ Kwekwe, why are you writing in capital letters like a PF thugs, can’t you humble yourself? Everything is over-reacting, fists in the air etc etc. You peace of PF things.

    • You are definitely a member of the Panga Family (PF). No wonder your party’s symbol is a clenched fist instead of an open palm. Obama once said ” We welcome all our adversaries with an open palm but those who respond with a clenched fist we do not welcome” Yes it is insolence and lack of manners including bad ones to have such a symbol. If you cant see the violations of human rights in this Panga Fighter ruled republic then you dont live here!

    • @kwekwe and GEN
you ar two stu.pid mother f.uckers who don’t mean well on this site.all you guys say every time you write something is utter rubbish.grow up dick heads.

    • @ nganda
I can sympathise with you borrowed contaminated brain.

I know you have no capacity to think for yourself except feed on the vomitus of your cancerous leader.

justify why sanctions must be imposed on our country if at all you are even Zambian…

if you don’t like what other people write and you cannot intelligently argue your point, just put you tail between your legs and go to sleep

    • BY ANY POSSIBILITY IF ZAMBIA SHOULD BE AMONGST THOSE HUMAN RIGHTS OFFENDERS THEN IT IS A MUST THAT EVERY COUNTRY IN THIS UNIVERSE MUST BE THERE. ZAMBIA CAN’T BE ANYWHERE NEAR THOSE OFFENDERS. HH AND THE OTHER DIRTY MINDED PERSONS SHOULD STOP MESSING UP ZAMBIA’S NAME.

    • @gbm general body malaise my ass.wat the hell ar u toking abt iwe i.diot so is changing yo blogg name goin to make a difference thats why i said grow up.i dint talk abt Zambia being sanctioned foo.l i was telling you to be reasonable and talk sense not talking rubbish all the time.debate sensibly like the rest that was my point dick head.wachinga nakali shina.

    • @ nganda
who can hide from a cockroach like you.

its because you have a borrowed contaminated brain that you cant see sense in what others write.
I will not bend to feed your whimsical and satisfy your parochial and devilish demands.

If you cant stand it commit suicide and the world will be better off without contaminant organisms like you and the devils you idolize.

    • just reading the above posts makes one fill ashamed of being part of ba LT discussants.
what has really gone wrong with our once vibrant, impartial, sane, accommodating blog?
why has this thread been invaded by these, these, these… good for nothing……
      awe mwe naleka kuti walufyanya.

  2. What a shallow type of thinking from this bunch of disappointed fools,so if Zambia was suspended as you wish, what will you gain from that? That’s rediculous, disgusting…you must be strong to be a meaningful opposition party more especially in Zambia. Tebuwelewele fye ati nifwe ba opposition….

  3. Some Zambian can be evil.HH,Sakwiba,RB and other id iots are demons who must be restricted to hell. Bambuli imwe!Sata never ran to foreigners but dealt with u demons within and defeated u.Stooges of the worst the kind who are sale outs.

  4. The people killing fellow citizens are the ones that are evil. Not the opposition. I dont understand bloggers getting pived bcoz of the call to suspend Zambia from C’wealth. I think there is a strong case to be argued in favor of suspension bcoz of the following reasons:
    a. currently in Zed, opposition parties can only do rallies (organise their supporters) if Sata wakes up on the ‘right side’
    b. ruling party cadres causing violence at election campaigns, now even in our towns, without restrain. the police are also afraid of the cadres
    c. our highest court has been invaded by party cadres (and ministers can ignore court order at will)
    d. corruption investigation of ministers is not allowed unless sanctioned by Sata
    e. our chiefs are being dethroned at will
    f. Sata cannot…

    • HH, Sakwiba Sikota they will never govern Zambia and remember there is no medicine to cure hatred and a clear conscience never fears midnight knocking. Sakwiba Sikota and HH are self righteous, arrogant, consumed with bitterness and hatred for SATA.
We know both Sakwiba and HH very well, they thought SATA and PF could not win an election hence the marriage with corrupt Rupiah Banda and MMD.

  5. WHEN PEOPLE CALL FOR THE EXPULSION OF A COUNTRY FROM ANY WORLD BODY THEY DO SO FROM OUTSIDE.
SOME OF THE GUYS LIKE SAKI WHO ARE REPRESENTING THE SO CALLED OPPOSITION, HAVE CASES OF CRAFT OR CORRUPTION CASES (IN THE CEMENT PROCUREMENT ETC) PENDING IN COURT TODAY, THE FELLAS ARE STILL DOMICILED IN THE COUNTRY, ENJOYING THEIR RIGHTS…

  6. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY SOME BLOGGERS HERE ARE BIZZY INSULTING THOSE WHO ARE FIGHTING FOR THEIR RIGHTS, FELLOW ZAMBIANS COUNTRYMEN AND WOMEN,THIS IS OUR ONLY COUNTRY AND WE HAVE ALL THE STRENGTH TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF OUR MOTHERLAND WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE TRIBE, RACE OR RELIGION.

  7. @p, if you were God i would believe you. many people just 5 years ago said the same about Sata. who is MCS now? even a sangoma cannot asy what u have said, wait for the time , you might rule zambai you yourelf p. who knows, no one not even yourself.

  8. Yes, we need to fight human right abuses in Zambia but calling for expulsion before any investigations by the UN and Commonwealth is silly politics. Not even Sri Lanka with appalling human rights abuses is being threatened with expulsion. David Cameron and others are talking about “doing more to promote human rights in the country by attending the meeting” NOT “expelling Sri Lanka to promote human rights”.

  9. Suspend the Demons! all u wankers opposing this move Bukala bwenu. cant u see the complete breakdown of law and order in our once peaceful society???cant u see the brutal killings and abuse of human rights being perpetrated by Michael and his Militia?? u never cease to amaze the hell out of me PF Wankers…

  10. Opposition really trying to shoot themselves in the legs and later start leaking wounds. Why champion expelling your own country just because you do not like 50 or so people that are in ministerial and presidency positions at the expense of 13 million other Zambians? Hate can take you surely to anything. If this is the way of opposition please learn from developed democracies. There are things you support as nationals come rain, sun sunshine or calamity. What is in opposing everything. Accept that we are different but but agree on certain things as a basis of democracy. Careless talk all the time, no limit to what you criticize. Put yourself in their shoes, you would also not do things correct 100% all the time. You also have small abilities just like what you think of those in govt.

  11. One thing i would like to know is what good these world international organisations are, are they the watch dog for the poor of the poorest African people or they are just another of those tea wine drinking meetings that sit for hours to discuss issues that only remain on paper until the next session?
Another issue i have is the genuineness of the opposition rushing to these international houses who never take action untill business is boosted as seen in the case of Syria, South Africa during aparthied, Rwanda, west africa, Congo etc.
Suggestions on how to sort out our own house are many the problem is people are protected by the constitution they built themselves, so what should be done? Let the Zambian people Propund on that for the future will still look like yesterday or today.

    • cindy we have seen hw this govt has been taking issues they dont know dialogue and we have seen hw they keep on abrogating the rule of law.issues of barotse needs dialogue and we havnt seen any.the serious problem they are facing is lack of good governance or leadership so to say.

  12. Superiority complex by the current group in opposition is really disgusting. This is a lesson for them to learn that the commonwealth secretariat did not even forward their wild proposal to the group of ministers for consideration. How pathetic can a group of oportunistic vultures be?
Next time, before you ask any foreign body to suspend our own country and cause untold misery on ordinary Zambians, think twice.
    Shameless goons!

  13. Try to think if the man that was killed was you brother, child, father or so? And remember, the recent killing is no the only one. By the way some casualties are in the hospital. Am sure the relatives to those killed must be supporting the calls of suspension. For me the people to blame are the government who are just watching yet they and we all know its a Kabimba vs GBM!

  14. The 84 Barotse activists facing treason charges have instructed their defence team to summon President Sata and first republican president Dr Kenneth Kaunda as witnesses should their treason charges proceed to trial.

The activists have also demanded that President Sata should immediately release and publish the Chongwe Commission Report on Barotseland.

In a statement signed by several sympathisers and released yesterday in Lusaka the activists have also warned President Sata to desist from treating the people of Barotseland as children of a lesser god by denying them basic protection offered by the constitution amid the crisis created by his own administration over the matter of the Barotseland Agreement.

The sympathisers include general Malimba Masheke, ADD president Charles…

  15. What law and order is this govt maintaining? Allowing their cadres to fight at their pleasure? Muzungu, find other people to lie to.

  16. Hit a nerve, did I? Well good, at least you are listening to what I say – enough to ban access.

I’d already decided to stop frequenting the site as it was significantly lowering my intelligence levels. Also, that silly thing you did, where anything I downvoted was automatically upvoted. Also that ***** you call Saulosi pretends to be an ordinary blogger, but most of us are wise to him. I have more balls than he has – and I’m a girl.

I had to congratulate Dr Ng’oma on every site I frequent, so that dear LT was my swansong yesterday.

  17. “Gen” must Shut up to assume that all Zambians can think like him. The violence that are being sponsored by Gen’s PF govt places Zambia as the obvious candidate deserving to be booted out of the Commonwealth as Community of civilized nations. The “official” killings of young men has placed most Zambians to live in great FEAR for their lives under the PF regime.

  18. Human rights abuses have always been there since the Kaunda days.
Those who deny this have never experienced the pain of losing loved ones who disappeared mysteriously and murdered by regimes in power. And they lost their lives for simply expressing their views.
Some regions of Zambia have been threatened and denied development for not voting for ruling dictatorships. Torture and murders of the Lozis by the MMD under Rupiah and now by PF under Sata are well documented. Some dictators have stood trial at the Hague over similar human rights crimes, so be careful.

  19. Some so-called NGOs are really childish! Do they seriously think the Commonwealth can sink so low as to suspend steadfast Zambia just because some nonentity political party, styled UPND, says so?

  20. Some comments are very childish en lack diplomacy, think en have some interlectual thots before commenting please, not mere insults! Am sure u know yo selves!!! *disgusted*

  21. When RB killed 14 your own you never considered zambia to be suspedned from the commomweath becoz you were a beneficiary. When we Kill one of our own you complain.

  22. Cindy, what is propund? Never heard of such a word before perhaps you could enlighten me. Also I have noticed you always type ‘i’ in lower case. Please this letter is always in upper case (or capitalized). Again not trying to be a spelling or a grammar cop but when these things are repeated they need to be corrected for the sake of young kids who read these blogs.

  23. cindy we have seen hw this govt has been taking issues they dont know dialogue and we have seen hw they keep on abrogating the rule of law.issues of barotse needs dialogue and we havnt seen any.the serious problem they are facing is lack of good governance or leadership so to say.

  24. When i say u are demons i am 100% right. look at the reasoning of this demon called Ndobo?U demons are really fo ols. lf Zambia can be suspended then most members can be suspended.U stooges that think c/wealth is some God wen its just a congragetion

  25. cindy we have seen hw this govt has been taking issues they dont know dialogue and we have seen hw they keep on abrogating the rule of law.issues of barotse needs dialogue and we havnt seen any.the serious problem they are facing is lack of good governance or leadership so to say.wat a life

  26. of slave masters(devils in sheep skins)nd slaves(gullibles pretending to be real pipo).Nevertheless, they can’t sink so low to buy into what u traitors are saying.lf Zambia can be suspended then even Britain can be suspend.More pipo are killed there.

  27. The UK should be expelled from the Commonwealth for all the atrocities and plunder they have done over the centuries!

  28. Well, I am not surprised at the venom that Sata’s haters continue to spew! One is in U.S. a few in Europe and a louse one in Australia! They never dreamed the man could be a president but he surprised them and he is our leader NOW! He is doing what he can NOW for the country but they are full of it! Please let your hared vanish or you would die of high blood pressure. After 10 years you can vote for another man but with your hearts filled with hate your man (the one you will support) may not be voted in because your hearts are not right. Relax, he is the President!!

  29. Good evening

Today I have more questions than answers:

    Who is deceiving who here?

How genuine are the calls from CDDR? Aren’t they only accomodating their political ambitions under the pretext of human rights violation?

Why run to the Commonwealth for help? Aren’t these the very same people that violated our human rights in every way during colonialism? Did they do anything when human rights violation was at it’s worst during apartheid in South Africa? Do they really have the interests of black people at heart? What repercussions does a suspension or total break-away from them have?

  30. @Kabika,let these educated fo ols keep on cheating themselves. Sata is what Jehovah says he is no matter their condemnations.Even those officials at c/w lough. Childish, childish, childish!

  31. A president who does not talk to his people will cause his people to seek to be addressed by external forces!
I hope Zambians won’t go back to voting for Frogs!

  32. Nothing will come out this meeting just like numerous others before.Harare declaration was not even worth the paper it was written on. Abuja declaration was equally trash. Sri-Lanka the host has executed thousands of people since 2008. Mr Scott will be among his buddies and he knows nobody will bring up Zambia. They will wine and dine over atrocities being committted in their countries and make more trash declarations.

  33. It’s funny how opposition is announcing their belief that they will never win. Otherwise suspending zambia would be a problem at 2016 year end because you asked for it. Therefore opposition is announcing that they have no confidence in any future

  34. Once upon a time in the land of Hambia lived a man called Hakaivotela Heka. The man was very rich and thought he can buy his way to success. One day he met an oldman who barely had been to school, the oldman gave him a plan that he needed his help to conquer the land of Hambia and overthrow the ruler.
