The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) will before the end of this year start to construct the first ever Air Force university which will be based in Mumbwa district of Central province.
ZAF Commander Eric Chimese disclosed that his office was formulating a letter of intent for the tertiary institution to government through the Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education.
Lieutenant General Chimese said ZAF officers would thereafter be trained at their own university once it is completed because education was key to achieving national development and to realise the full mandate of its cadre of qualified servicemen and women.
He said this in Lusaka today when he opened a two-day ZAF training seminar at Chamba Valley whose theme s, ‘promoting a culture of learning that is key to Air Force’.
He further disclosed that his institution has plans to construct a new ZAF Academy as the current Livingstone Academy lacks the necessary military education tools suitable for an academy.
Lieutenant General Chimese said ZAF was faced with financial challenges to sponsor its officers to higher institutions of learning.
He has since challenged the participants to put the knowledge they will gain into practice.
And speaking earlier, ZAF Chief of Training John Sinyangwe regretted that some officers have abandoned ZAF in preference for other lucrative institutions despite them being sponsored to attain higher professional qualifications.
Brigadier General Sinyangwe however commended government for the funds ZAF was receiving through the training department.
He has since appealed to the officers to be loyal to their superiors and the government of the day.
The two-day ZAF training seminar has attracted 60 participants from all Commands in Livingstone, Mumbwa, Logistics, Mbala’s Samora Machel, Chamba Valley and Air headquarters.

wasting resources, do u have professors to teach at your University or lishina fye u are after, Hone and Zast can take care of your needs
@Octopus, There are more than 20 private universities in Zambia today, and I wonder why not ZAF have their own 3 classroomed university.
Umwaiche afilwa inchito. Why not enter into an MOU with the Government universities to have qualifying military personnel pay lower tuition fees. A system can then be put in place to guard against abuse of the facility by non-military personnel.
You guys must grow up in your thinking!Building a university for airforce training is very important. The training it will provide cannot be offered by these private tumtemba universities mashrooming everywhere.ZAST is no longer operational and for your own information ZAST was not a military training institute. It was offering fliying courses mostly for commercial aircrafts.
Infrastructure is key to development jealousy down this govt is very progressive. We were discussing new projects proposed by Leicester City council last night it’s amazing plans are underway to link Leicester with massive Infracture , guess what this initiative is from the local authority. Go forward mother Zambia we are in support of PF Govt.
@ TELL US YOUR SOURCE
which goverment is progressive?ulishilu?
Don’t worry, Lusaka Sewage Works have also announced that they will be opening a University soon & H.E. is rumoured to be nominated as the first Chancellor!!
Iam looking for a 3 bedroomed house libala so that I build a university too
This should have been done way back when ZAF was in it’s infancy. However, a thousand miles journey starts with a single step.
This is the way forward not all the time Kabimba this PF,HH and MMD that. Can somebody update me on the proposed erection of universities in all provinces?
@Action, who said their will be erection competition in each province?
Why aren’t we investing in more modern aircraft ? Zed has some antique warplanes that honestly we’re no match to the airforces of Angola,Kenya or S.A.
Successful leadership of Zambian defence forces are run by men and women who don’t know what an initiative is?
These institutions should have been leading the country in churning out technicians, engineers and scientists but leaders are more interested in titles and defrauding the system.
This is sheer waste of resources and another way for this commanders to siphon govt funds. Why not improve already existing infrastructure? L/stone is one good example so is ZASTI and Force HQ. Education does not only take place in rectangular buildings. Why not invest the money into better technology, intelligence training, skills etc. For once send to train your airforce men and women to US, Canada, UK, etc with your own money. Why waste money on outdated ways of learning? Get real skills instead of just saluting the president and polishing his shoes
It’s about time Zambia trained it’s pilots. The nation shouldn’t depend on others
for simple chores like training a pilot, where is your development?
Eric my friend that is the way but I wonder if the university idea is realistic. We suffered at that Academy 24 years ago in Livingstone, no water, poor accommodation and many more. A lot of guys went AWOL. Mumbwa was worse! Mbala perfect! Course 30 the notorious intake ever! Otherwise, the training was wonderful and comprehensive. I always miss military life. People will leave for various reasons and this is natural in any institutions. Good luck though. Retired officer.
Yes, Livingstone was bad, but Mumbwa was hell! The billets, the drinking in the zones!
Thats why I went AWOL and have never looked bad.
Course 30 malingerer
Oh my God WO Kashala, the drunkard who once saluted in civilian dress while sleeping on the floor along a path and the CO was stunned! This means we were in the same course for sure! The likes of Sgt Lungu….
Yes, we must have been course mates! Am I wrong? Am I wrong, you Minota. And WO Hamaiko etc . Those were the days. Course 30 !
Octupus ni mput isula ishibula ukubwekeshapo
Are u a soldier octopus is right get a life Shaka no need fora university improve existing structures
Please enlighten what these men and women of ZAF do? We have able bodied men just lazing around imagining an enemy who is not even there. They have outdated aircraft which killed our national team in 1993. In my view recruitment in these institutions should cease forthwith and the only recruitment will be to replace retiring folks. It is huge colossal amounts of money being paid to men and women who are just idling around. Maybe those who play at Red Arrows are being put to productive use. Bane I was at ZNS and clearly these institutions are merely siphoning money from govt coffers. Perhaps Presidents love to be saluted but the common man sees no benefit. Ian Smith’s soldiers were having breakfast in Zambia in the 80s and bombing us at will and our ZAF never fired a single shot.
ZAF never fired yes and thats what has even given you the peace and security to even scratch your tiny balls comfortably in bed as real men risk theirs. What ‘war’ do you silly civilians like waffling about ? Go to war torn coutries and see the effects of war iwe shetani
I think Chimese is gone too far now in the bid to please his masters and hoodwink ZAF men n women in uniform into thinking that PF is the party. Who wil b eligible to study @ your university? I kno tha it has been very difficult for Airmen to further their education bcos u tell them that they can’t go for Degree n Diploma courses. Only officers can do that nowonder pipo leave after sch. I for one sam planning to leave for greener patures.
And we are surprised when we see our debt increasing every week!!
Every one shouls have his own university. heheheheh!
What a sitipid, irrelevant and expensive idea. There are only three countries with University level military institutions. These are USA, Russia and China. Soon to be joined by Zambia…..naha ya litoto!
Du muss crank sein! I dont even know how u ended up in Germany. We are probably one of very few countries with no military institution of higher learning beyond Staff College in Africa. Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, RSA, Nigeria etc have National Defence Colleges offering university level education in defence and security and admission is extended to civilians occupying senior or strategic positions in both govt and the private sector. Dont get into a discussion whose topic you hardly understand.
Ba Chris, abalwele ni mwebo. There is no special qualification for someone to be in Germany or any country in the world for that matter. Man you’re coming out like a very backward dude! ‘I don’t even know how you ended up in Germany?’….what a fullish thing to say!
@ Chipeshamano. You have responded on behalf of Sepo without thinking about what he said. Sepo called us back home “Naha ya litoto” meaning a Nation of fools/*****s, just because he (like you) is in Europe! I called him sick and wondered how a fool by implication (having come from Zambia, a nation of fools) could have ended up in Germany. Your knee-jerk reaction to an issue which was not even addressed to you is reminiscent of an equally sick mind. Never call Zambia naha ya litoto!
@Chipeshamano. The stars in my posting denote “fo.ols/idi.ots” as in “Nation of fo.ols/idi.ots”
Air Force University? The Ministry of Defence must come up with just one institution to offer qualifications in military science. Otherwise tomorrow the army commander will want the establishment of an army university, the next day it will be someone asking for a police university, national service university, shushushu university, security guards university, etc. The result will be mickey-mouse universities allover which cannot even be accredited.
ZAF is ZAF period when they come for training in UK they go to Airforce Loyal training institutions.
yes my friend i know you people are very ignorant about professional military education, we are supposed to have air (airforce) university, army university, police university etc even private companies can make their universities like in Joburg you will find Hollard the insurance company they have their on university. i see nothing wrong with this idea. People are critising due to lack of knowledge, dont think university are supposed to be just three in the all country. some of us have traved round the world and we have seen things that you people who are critising like Mr Blue Blood will never see, so because you are using ignorance you are forgiven, but learn just search your internet for air university, army, police, navy univesities and you will definately see what am telling you.
Am with you # Blue Blood. In Zambia, we lack proper thinkers because many people in decision making have no proper education. They are promoted for being party cadres. Why not have one defence academy offering degrees for all defence disciplines? We lacked the term university and now we have every Jelita and Mulenga late ba school everywhere being called a university like we use international for every air strip.
That university is for ZAF by ZAF of ZAF period. Aaaaaaaaah
Or is it FAZ University???
