Nurses at University Teaching have again gone on strike. The stroke action commenced Thursday night after a meeting with union officials from the Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation resolved to down tools.

The strike follows government’s failure to honour its pledge to effect the 21% salary increment for October salaries.

A check at UTH Friday morning found a skeleton staff of Sister In Charges taking over the general nursing duties.

The situation is likely to get desperate if the strike continues as the student nurses who are normally called upon during such strikes are busy preparing for their examinations.

[pullquote]This Shamenda man came here last month when we initially went on strike and told us that we should put his head on the chopping board if government does not pay us our 21 percent salary increments. Our October salaries are still showing 4 percent and now we want Shamenda to come back to UTH and we chop off his head[/pullquote]

Some striking nurses interviewed vowed never to return to work until government effects the new increments. They have since appealed to Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda to come back to UTH and resolve the situation.

“This Shamenda man came here last month when we initially went on strike and told us that we should put his head on the chopping board if government does not pay us our 21 percent salary increments. Our October salaries are still showing 4 percent and now we want Shamenda to come back to UTH and we chop off his head,” one angry nurse said.

Another one interviewed said government is now taking the plight of nurses in Zambia as a mockery.

“This just shows that this government does not take us seriously. How could they just come here and lie to us? This is so unfair and it has to stop,” she said.

Last month, nurses in Kitwe, Livingstone and Lusaka staged a week-long strike after government failed to implement a 21% salary increment in September.

    • my friend,if you were a parent, then you would not produce such words out of your mouth.there times when a parent promises a new pair of shoes but fails to buy.Does that mean he or she does not love there children?should the children protest against there parents for not getting them a pair of shoes?
a wise child will ask there parents what is going on and give them enough time,am sure no parent will rejoice when the children are suffering.so government is doing everything possible to have the nurses salaries adjusted upwards but they need time.so please do not add salt to bleeding wound, there a lot of people dying out there because of shallow minded people like you.

    • @wanzelu
Why do you chaps reason like illiterates? surely these nurses shud give grz time. If these hule nurses are fired where ll they get jobs apart from other women husbands bedrooms.

    • I wonder what money nurses need. My wife is a nurse and the fuel money I give her per month is far much above what she gets. Please nurses try marriages we shall buy you cars, build houses as long as you give babies. how about this offer?

  1. Let’s get prepared for the long haul coz i foresee govt being stubborn and firing all striking nurses and then bringing in all old retired nurses in tandem with tuma student nurses. There’s simply no buck my dear nurses. Anyone with half a brain had already deduced long ago that these crazy increments would not be sustainable but alas, people love shoving their heads in the sand and fail to be objective. It still baffles me how supposedly educated people can find excuses to justify nonsense. Coz even this bringing in of a national airline, irrespective of all evidence pointing at how airlines are struggling to make money world over, you will hear tubene Saulosi and his disciples e.g. Zambiano 🙂 ) praising this excuse of a govt. Sad really.

  2. I tottery agree with u. what do we expect from stone age leaders and government. mother Zambia, my is heart bleeding of the current happens.

    • @4 jong’h
who cares if your bleeds or not. Which leaders do you want zambia to ve…. Those who stole from privatisation, killing lots of our pipo thru their corrupt activities or those that stole tithe and offering from the poor church flock. Both of which lead fake lavish life styles.

  3. @ Gen, I tottery agree with u. what do we expect from stone age leaders and government. mother Zambia, my is heart bleeding of the current happens.

  4. Her we go again it is not current happens Kkekekekekekek i think it should be current happenings. Take No offense please

  5. I am enjoying this! Very soon Ukwa will run out of police to man the trouble spots that are mushrooming all over the place! Lekeni Sata ateke! Kwaaaaaaah!

  6. Nurses please go back to work, your money will be given to you. The Government has already agreed to do calculations again. The Accontants might have not finished the works. bare with them.

  7. ISSUES EVERYDAY,CONFUSIONS EVERYDAY,AN CERTAINTY EVERYDAY, CRY MOTHER ZAMBIA,WHEN ARE WE GOING TO ENJOY THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR PARTY IN POWER. 1.EXPENSIVE MEAL MILL, 2.10 COPIES OF THE CONSTITUTION, 3. DEPLOYMENT OF ARMED POLICE OFFICERS AT CHITIMUKULU’S PALACE, PARTY CARDERS KILLING EACH OTHER. 4. NURSES STRIKING AT OUR ONLY LARGEST REFERRAL HOSPITAL. THE LIST IS ENDLESS.

    • Gentle reminder my brother/sister. Use small letters as opposed to capital letters when posting a contribution. Capital letters mean that you are SHOUTING instead of speaking at normal tone!

  8. Oh no! when are we ever going 2 hear a kind of latest which will bring joy instead of problems everyday? Zambia, are we building?

  9. Its very unfortunate that innocent people’s lives are at great risk as a result of this inhumane impasse. Why are these government chaps failing to uphold the integrity of the workers plight in the country and avoid running the country like a piggery? Why cant they please Zambians for once ever-since the took over govt-its either lives have been lost in a tragic accident or one has been insulted and humiliated in the presence of his/her children. Are we the only country with illiterate leaders in the world? Oh! Jesus the Messiah come back fast so that these things do not lead Zambians into sin.

  10. The whole country is on remote control. Sata should be able to drive and not to be dozing off. Wake up to the real Zambia.

  11. Now nurses have gone too far. I am a civil servant and government has not rewarded me the 21 % salary increment. My salary increment is less than 10%. But what government has done to all civil servants is to increase other allowances such as transport, housing, on call allowances for doctors, night shifts etc…. when you add all these small allowances you find that you have the increment ranging from 30 to 50 %. I my self got a total of 50 % increment. So these nurses have no case against GRZ. In fact if they are not careful they will lose the jobs coz no civil servant (besides cleaners and office assistants) has received a salary increment of over 20% they are demanding. They are not special civil servants than others.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia

  12. The government and the President Increased their salaries why didn’t the president refuse his increment and those in parliament whose money was increase so as to give that portion to the nurses. It least it would have assisted and look for another area.

  13. do you know that nurses work one week night and the following week they are off duty and when they are in dat shift the knock off early, their demands are unacceptable what i mean is that they work less days in a month as compared to other government workers.

  14. Oh my God,r these nurses the only ones employed by Goverrnent? Police officers whose lives r always @ risk don’t even get half of what they earn yet they don’t even complain.not to talk abt prison officers,National registration officers and the likes, thiz officers get peanuts yet they don’t complain, wats so special abt nurses anyway?r they a special case?

  15. People when u promise something make sure u fulfill it!pf is full of fake promises, anyway I think time will tell but let’s jst wait to what they will deliever to us,

  19. Comments: I don’t have a “favorites” list of video games because over the years and all the
different genres and platforms, I think it’s impossible to create a fair and accurate list; however, if there is one game I claim
to be my favorite it’s Halo: Combat Evolved.
An excellent mixture of elements from the original MSX and NES
Metal Gear games and Playstation’s Metal Gear Solid, this
Game Boy Color game brought excellent stealth action to the portable scene.
Within a few moments, the Pokemon will download to your saved

Nintendo is expected to incorporate an ‘app’ store and more multimedia features into the upcoming device, however, they will also most likely continue to avoid…
