The government has embarked on an ambitious programme of modernising all hospitals in the country to enhance provision of quality health care.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr Peter Mwaba said government is investing heavily in health infrastructure and will turn the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) into a super speciality centre while Livingstone, Ndola and Kitwe General Hospitals will be upgrade.

Director of Mobile and Emergency Health Services Gardner Syakantu who spoke on behalf of Dr Mwaba at the University of Zambia School of Medicine 2013 prize giving ceremony held at Ridgeway Campus announced that government has also procured high technological equipment for the four major hospitals in excess of US$5 million.

Dr Syakantu disclosed that government has for the first time in Zambia procured a Cardiac Catherisation Lab equipment to manage heart problems and neural conditions and hoped that the procured equipment will help reduce referral cases for treatment abroad.

He also said in addition to the two CT Scanners available at Cancer Diseases and Levy Mwanawasa Hospitals, Livingstone, Ndola , Kitwe and UTH will also receive Computerised Tomography Scanners to improve diagnostic, treatment and intervention measures.
Dr Syakantu said the government has made available adequate funds to improve health care and the ministry of health is working hard to also ensure that lower hospitals and health centres are upgraded to improve health service delivery.

He revealed that the ministry is grappling with questionable practices in a significant number of cases and urged the University of Zambia Faculty to provide and scale up the right training for those joining the service.

And the University of Zambia Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Mutale Chanda commended the School of Medicine for reintroducing the awards ceremony and hoped that it will encourage students to excel in their studies.

  1. Hospitals, As far as I know there is one Hospital in Lusaka in UTH, and it a terrible hospital last time I went to

If you fall ill, better to go to private clinics like Maina soko

    Thanks

    • Mushota, Maina soko is not a private hospital. It is a military hospital funded by the govt through the Ministry of Defense!

But you are right about the deplorable conditions at UTH.

    • Maina Soko was a Private hospital, built by private citizens who contributed their hard earned money for it, ONLY TO BE GRABBED AWAY FROM THEM BY KK, they were never COMPENSATED!!! That was the ugly side of that old fart!!!

    • maikalange you are right! KK visited any and every successful venture that appeared to challenge his incompetent government. Even Catholic institutions were not spared… it was so petty it was almost an insult to wear better clothes than they had.

  2. It is not even about modernizing; it is about doing the right thing. Most of the infrastructure is still pre- and peri-independence grade. This is the same as what goes on with the roads – we resurface the road and we think we have modernized; no widening, no banking – and oh! a lot of humps on freeways… What these guys should be saying is they will now do what is right and bring us finally into the 20th Century at the very least (asking for 21st Century standards is a bit too much)

  3. Just modernizing UTH is not the answer!
The training for our medical students need to be modernized!
How many of our doctors are trained and certified in BLS, ACLS and ATLS?
How many of our doctors are conversant with AEDs, Defibrillators and ventilators?
You can’t practice in some countries if you are not trained or up to date in emergency medicine irrespective of your speciality!
Just buying equipment without investing in appropriate training in that particular equipment is not only dangerous but over zealous!

Moreover, we need two UTHs, one in the northern region and one to cater for the central and southern region! This is what will bring efficiency in the system!

  4. Good move but also invest in skilled manpower. Ridgeway product is good but need specializations- Cardiologist, Interventional radiologist, interventional cardiologist, cardiothoracic surgeons, etc to manage complicated cases.

  5. Every time they make such an announcement somebody is getting rich. How many times are they going to make these Announcement ? Last time we debated on an announcement to modernise the Lusaka General or levy. Is this the same money or are they just finding excuses and capitalising on our short memory? stealing from your own country is the same as stealing from your own home. when are these chaps ever going to get serious? If we can plan and build beautiful shopping malls, why can’t we do the same for schools, roads and hospitals? You have to plan these things properly. Lusaka General was supposed to be an ultra modern hospital, is it living up to expectations? If not how much is it costing the tax payer? Who is benefiting?

  6. They say one thing but different things happen on the ground. There have been so many people with specialization that have been frustrated by those UTH/ministry of health guys cause they fear theyll loose their positions or something. Training is random and erratic, no incentives to succeed etc. You train in USA or UK as an interventional cardiologist then come try get a job at UTH, they will treat you like g a r b a g e and not employ you. Been there, seen it. A backward dim witted nation is not ready ready for development. Just busy making noise like hyenas, busy frustrating people that want progress.

  7. Talking of modernizing hospitals seems good idea. Ndola Central Hospital needs repairs before all that actually a lot of renovations. we ve linkages c everywhere such that they dump blankets on the floor to clear the water near the lab at the base very embarrassing, go to second floor male ward disaster blocked toilets and linking toilets, broken chairs, pot holed floors, plus the bad treatment of our nurses ishi. Our silent MP Shamenda you really ve work Ndola Central is big , its not just tuma compounds no. If we can ve facilities like good toilets, runnuing water, nicely installed basins in the wards, people fetch drinking water from the toilets, were are we?

  8. I like the valuable ?nfo you provid? in your articles.
I will bookma?k yo?r weblog and check again he?e regularly.
I’m ?uite ce?tain I’ll learn plenty of n?w stuff right here!
Best of luck f?r the next!
