Can PF provide meaningful leadership on the mealie-meal issue?- NAREP

It is an acceptable for the PF government especially Hon. Kabwili to come out and threaten millers and retailers over the mealie-meal price increase. Did he at any time try to analyze why the price of mealie-meal has been hiked?

The only question as NAREP we’ll ask the government is “what plan do you have to make sure that the price of mealie-meal is always within the reach of the majority poverty stricken Zambians?”

Clearly our beloved colleagues have no idea as to how they are going to handle this issue. Few months ago it was mealie-meal shortage. Now it is price hike.

Threatening millers and retailers will in no way solve the problem. All it will do is worsening the situation. This is an exhibition of poor leadership on the part of those given the responsibility to lead.

This is unacceptable and as NAREP, we’ll not sit and watch our citizens in Makululu, Zambia compound, Mapatizya, Kanyama and many more economically and socially challenged communities plunge further into the dungeon of hopelessness and destitution because people who were given the responsibility to better their lives have gone to sleep or they simply don’t care.

Meanwhile the retail price of mealie meal in Luwingu district in the Northern province has reached K80.00 for the breakfast and K75.00 for roller meal respectively.

A check at the main market and Burma market in Luwingu revealed that business houses have increased the commodity because of transport costs from Lusaka and the Copperbelt provinces.

And a resident Chinda Mwila who complained to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) that the price of mealie meal has increased despite government directive to reduce the prices.

Mr Mwila said most of the retail outlets in Luwingu are selling the commodity between K80 and K85 for the breakfast meal and between K70 and K75 for roller meal respectively.

He appealed to business houses not to take advantage of the removal of fuel and maize subsidies to exploit the consumers in Luwingu by increasing mealie meal price.

Mr Mwila said in some parts of Zambia people were complaining about the mealie meal price which has been increase from K50 to K65 for breakfast while in Luwingu and some districts in the Northern province including Kasama mealie meal price has shot to over K70 per 25 kilogram bag of breakfast.

Meanwhile fuel price at the black market has increased taking advantage of lack of a filling station in Luwingu district.

The fuel (petrol and diesel) which is openly sold like any other commodity such as rape, tomatoes and, sugar in retail shops is selling at a high price in Luwingu district.

A survey by ZANIS revealed that petrol is costing K220 per 20litre container while diesel is K180 per 20litre container and government departments with a number of vehicle refuse to buy fuel product from the local alleging it is contaminated.

They are forced to buy the fuel in bulk in Kasama which is about 165km away.

Many motorists have appealed to both the government and business community to consider extending fuel business to Luwingu district.

They said the district will soon be open to the rest of the country following the Link Zambia 8000 road project being carried out by the PF government.

Luwingu Council Secretary Jovax Goma said tarring of Luwingu – Mansa road, Luwingu – Kawambwa road, Luwingu – Samfya road, Luwingu – Kaputa road and Luwingu- Nsombo – Chilubi road will bring massive developments in the district.

Mr Goma said motorists will require fuelling their vehicles in Luwingu adding there was need for business men and women to invest in Luwingu district.

He said transporters from the Copperbelt, Western, North-western and Lusaka province as well as that from Congo Democratic Republic will be passing through Luwingu to get to Mpulungu port and Tanzania respectively.

“All these vehicles will require to fuel from here in Luwingu and the district has opportunity to grow economically and the livelihood will change,” he added.

He also said urged the business community to consider opening up a milling plant in Luwingu to avert the swelling price of mealie meal in the district.

  1. when you elect people like kambwili, an illiterate you expect the economy to improve just because they were shouting loudest ati ‘donchi kubeba’ people of Zambia you can eat your own vomit. no regrets. me I can afford even if it were to sell at k200/10kg. enjoy you stupidity

    • it is people like those proud calling themselves” Darklord” the devil, Satanist that rejoice when the masses are suffering, and justifying there evil by saying Zambian are obessed with Nsima?

    • Kambwili is no longer illiterate he has a degree with distinction from copperstone university! He is just too infatuated with politics to reason better.

    • A degree at cornerstone university graduating without a cap of knowledge. When was he attending classes

  2. I thought Kambwili was a minister of sports. Anybody make me understand why anyboby in any ministry can talk about issues not releted to their ministry. PF, Yaba!!!

    • The reason is simple- Kambwili knows some agric and even owns some cattle. Not aba ba Bob Sichinga. He cant even tell the difference between grass and maize.

  3. No one really in FP (PF) owns a farm and how can they produce pumper harvest? Last year they said we were coming out of the chnges but this year is theirs. Peasant farmers are the one who feed all town dwellers. What the government has cheated people is that subsidy has just been removed from maize when in the actual sense they have asked peasant farmers to pay K100 from K50 and late deliverance of the farming inputs. Right now some that is when some farmers are getting their fertilizer.

These guys are not farmers. Kambwili has become the price controller when he knows that Zambia has liberal type of governmenet.

  4. If You elect people like Satan Things fall.
He was thrown out of heavens
He was thrown out of MMD
Now he wants to destroy his own.
    They are Vikopo these Kaponyas,
    Dander Heads.
    Now the economy is dwindling.
We need Paster Mumba now for deliverance.
    Things Are worsening out true.

  5. In his usual kaponya style Kambwili is already shouting without thinking. He must understand that there are reasons why prices of goods and services rise or fall, and what he is supposed to do is first understand these fundamentals before making useless comments that show his inability to understand simple economics. I really pity this country under this PF regime with its confused leadership style. WE ARE IN TROUBLE BY THESE LOOTERS.

  6. Let’s just deverisify our diet. ..I have survived 5 years without nsima and I’m still alive today.
Nsima is not as nutritious as our parents made us believe; there so many tasty options like rice, cassava, chapattis, potatoes, pounded yam etc.
This notion of staple diet has to end…the benefits to our economy are limitless when we move on tge path to diversification.

    Wake up people! !

    • You have spoken well. In fact I kind of wonder when people think they are suffering when they have sweet potatoes in the ground, rice around the corner, and flour galore to make their breads… This stuck-in-a-time-warp mindset will be our undoing going forward.

    • Spot on…the powers that be will not let us diversify because the benefit immensely from this dependence on maize meal through their haulage and milling companies, through the flawed distribution and procurement processes. The day people will wake up will be the day when Zambia will be the breaf basket of Central Africa.

    • Iwe boyi why do want us to change from our beloved meali meal? Have you considered the fact that the whole of southern africa and part of central africa have meali meal as their staple food. What we have here is a planning problem which can easily be solved if politics corruption and nepotism are seperated from the planners.

  7. The worse corrupt minister is kambwili who has literally taken over all contracts at luanshya mines, the worth he has amassed to himself with in the short period is shocking! can the ACC investigate this man if govt means well on corruption fight.

  8. The Dark Lord!, Jay Jay, Kalok; We can all move from nshima to other types of food like rice, bread etc But the questions are: how much is flour in Zambia per same kg of mealie meal? how much is flour per same kg of mealie meal? How accessible is flour in most parts of Zambia like Luwingu….Kaputa..Mwansabombwe for example. This flour and rice you are talking about is a privilege of a few Zambians, hope you have ever thought of it. Most people don’t even report about hunger when they have mangoes, sweet potatoes etc, you only get to know about their hunger when the situation triggers beyond their survival. So its not about obsession of nshima. To the govt; how many sectors are you going to threaten without solving the problems? Dialogue is best way to lead and manage situations. Period.

  9. THIS IS JUST THE TIP OF AN ICEBERG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE WORST IS YET TO COME , just watch and see the time ball !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Naimwe let us encourage people to diversify their diet and not always depending on Nshima. We can eat rice, Potatoes, etc inplace of Inshima. For the people in villages towns like Luwingu let them learn that Mealie meal prices are seasonal…..they should store the maize for use in this period (december, January and February). They should not sell all their maize. People should learn to plan.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

  11. News from Zambia shows a completely chaotic governance and judicial structure in Zambia. Now we all know who the authour of confusion is and by the reports he seems to be having a feild day . It is past time for those who have been made “kings and priests unto our God” to take control of this appalling situation and ” reign on the earth” in accordance with Revelation 5:10. Zambia’s state is a serious indictment on the church of Jesus Christ in the nation. In the end it doesn’t matter how “prosperous” individual church members become or how big our cathedrals if our nation is the chaotic mess we read about daily the papers. Question is: will the intercessors, the prophets ( the real prophets, not the rent a prophet crowd) rise? will God’s kings and priests step up and fulfill their…
