The Zambia Union of Nurses Organization (ZUNO) has written to President Michael Sata pleading for leniency on behalf of the dismissed Nurses.

ZUNO President Tom Yung’ana says recruiting new nurses is not a solution to the situation but that government should instead pardon the dismissed nurses.

Mr. Yung’ana says the Union has formally written to President Michael Sata to pardon the dismissed Nurses who took part in an illegal strike last month so that they can be reinstated.

He says it is imperative that the Nurses are forgiven for the sake of their welfare and for the sake of enhancing service delivery in the health sector.

He adds that the continued firing of nurses by government is saddening because the Health Sector lacks adequate manpower.

More than two hundred Nurses from Lusaka, Choma, Ndola, Kitwe, Chipata, Kasama and Livingstone have been dismissed after participating in an illegal ten day strike last month .

    • ZUNO advised the nurses that they were breaking their own conditions of service that they signed to observe, by carrying out an illegal strike. They insulted Mr. Yung’ana for giving them correct guidance. All that ZUNO can do now is just plead to Govt for leniency on the ignorant nurses who now have realized that they were foolish in their action. ZUNO is doing the best that can be done in the situation of those nurses.

    • ZUNO needs support and prayers for their appeal to be considered by Govt. Most importantly ZUNO should ensure in future no illegal strikes are condoned for such very important essential workers like nurses. Most nurses who went on strike are those who have no aptitude/vocation for nursing but just joined for sake of employment. Sacked nurses should be reinstated and blacklisted that if they repeat similar misconduct in future to be accorded instant dismissals. Meanwhile Govt please reinstate every nurse but do not pay them for the days they not provided service, Amen!

  1. i wonder how one benefits from being in the union, how can these guys sit and enjoy members moneys and yet when it matters most, they are quiet, Look at the chap Hikaumba and His Brother Hakainde, both very mute as if they dont know that there is such an important issue, how can we trust these political nikopumps

    • Nurses were wrong by engaging in an illegal strike. They have realized it and they apologized unfortunately after they were already dismissed. All that can be done now is to just plead with Govt to forgive them and ZUNO is doing just that. What more do you want ZUNO to do now, when they had advised the nurses early of the consequences of their illegal strike?

  2. Government has dismissed the nurses – that’s final. What ZUNO can do now is help its members with funds for survival and assist them get jobs abroad. There are plenty jobs out there for our nurses. Please do not continue to cry over spilled milk. ZUNO, next time around please take out insurance policies for your members to take care of such happenings.

  3. Mike you are right .All government workers had their salaries increased .Some wanted to get more than others. In all circumstances what the nurses should have done as essential workers is to speak their grievances through their representatives , the union or other unions. This is what other essential departments do.Do you know how many lives we lost during the period of their useless action that would have been saved? We know this people they are specialists and its very easy for them to find jobs abroad where grievances are aired using stones like for example in the middle east ,and not in Zambia ,the civilized peace haven of the world .Act like our learnt teachers whose actions are timely and calculated. All departments have grievances of their own kind .

    • Mike we may have lost lives during the strike but should we continue losing even more lives due to low staffing levels as a result of firing nurses? Surely if criminals can be pardoned why not repentant nurses.

  4. The story of limited labour made our nurses big headed, lawlessness breeds poverty and distruction.U reap what you sow…Govt’s is now on the receiving side….

  5. But nurses said they would go abroad to work where they would be getting $4000 per month. Why now apologizing and pleading for reinstatement? Where is HH to cry with you…where is HH to give you Jobs? wanted to hold GRZ at ransom but alas it back fired and now its you who are held at ransom. Really you are looking so foolish in the eyes of Zambians….a big lesson to learn that pride and blind following does not pay.

Nevertheless we ask our listening president HE Sata to forgive these nurses as they have learned a big lesson they will never forget. Please GRZ and Sata forgive them, they are your children.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

    • @Truth. Well said. If these jobs abroad are so easy to get, why have they not left the country? Unfortunately they cannot hide behind the vail of ‘loyalty and service’ now. The truth is seeing a job advert online and successfully applying for it are 2 very different things.

Since this is a time for giving just ask santa for your old jobs back. Am sure santa at plot 1 will make your wishes come true.

      Have a merry xmas!
