Opposition People’s Party Leader Mike Mulongoti has observed that the statement by Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda that there are no funds being saved from the removal of subsidies on Maize and Fuel is confusing people in the country.

Mr. Mulongoti said that by issuing such a statement, Mr. Chikwanda was also telling the people in the country that the removal of subsidies was not well intended.

Mr. Mulongoti said that this was because some people in the country supported the move to lift subsidies on fuel and maize because they thought government was going to take the saved money to carter for other projects.

The People’s Party leader has observed that this is also why the Minister of Finance is confusing the nation as he seems to be contradicting government’s earlier statement as how the funds saved from the removal of subsidies were said will be utilized.

He noted that it is therefore imperative that Mr. Chikwanda comes out clearly and remove speculations in the minds of the people in the country who supported the removal of subsidies knowing that the money would be channeled to developmental projects.

  1. Zambia is being run on the non existent guidelines of street kantemba budget and business principles.Thats why PF can’t explain it Mulongoti.

    • hahahahah,,, even confused mulongoti can see the confusion in PF,, awe shuwa

off topic!! imwe bantu Sata is a loving father, i just seen his picture with his daughter on ZWD. Sata is smilling,, nicely in the picture!! the best smile in picture from Sata i have ever seen… that picture have changed my view of Sata, the man has a loving heart for his kids desipte of his erretic acts

    • Ok guys lets face it…tumbuka guy and ndobo you are just haters…remember pf has 3 more years to rule, which means the lump on your throats will still be there for the above mentioned duration.

My advice live with it guys…2016 maybe you will get healed…just maybe.

  2. True …let Chikwanda explain how that there is no savings from the removal of subsidies. Does he mean there were no subsidies which he himself told us that he was removing? Mr Chikwanda sir explain.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

    • Clarification was done already, saving was realized and immediately channeled to development, what you and ndobo should be asking about is probably how much.Overrall PF keeps scoring.

  3. Old dinosaur. All he knows is scheming & thieving. Chikwanda is better off relaxing at one of his many farms – entertaining grand and great grand children…. You wonder why rich old men still want to steal . . .typical of bemba criminals – its in their blood.

  4. He actually did explain but in a non-clear way. He said that the money was already diverted to other projects but what we contend is they need to tabulate exactly how much has gone to these projects and what these projects are not the blanket statement he released where there seems no accountability.

  5. Mulongoti jealous pc is clear loved. By zanbians and it’s statements are
    Not confusing. Just join ubwwto
    Lekeni sata ateke

  6. @MUSHOTA’S CALL

BA MULONGOTI IS A CONFUSED FELLOW. WHAT SAVINGS IS HE TALKING ABOUT?

BECAUSE BY JUST LOOKING AT THE UNPRECEDENTED LEVEL OF INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT WHICH ARE CURRENTLY TAKING PLACE IN THE COUNTRY, ANYONE COULD SEE THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS RE-DIRECTING SUCH FINANCIAL BENEFITS TO OTHER AREAS! SO WHAT IS CONFUSING ABOUT THE MINISTER’S STATEMENT?

    WHERE IS MUSHOTA?

    • @ luapula premier
Only another lunatic can understand incomprehensible ranting of fellow lunatic, or, in your case, pretend to be well learned to be able to understand idiocy and be positive about.

  7. Confused lot. You put a mad man in power what else would you expect. The country is in a state of confusion. Zambians should learn a lesson from 2011

  8. Solve the simple equation.
Lets assume your total expenditure is k100 split as follows:
    K30 on talk time
    K50 on house repairs
    K20 on school books.
You reduce expense on talk time to K5 and increase your expense on house repairs to K70 as well as school expense to K25. How much are you saving from your K100? I rest my case

    • The correct question is – How much have you saved from talk time expense?

So that we can know how much has gone to house repairs and school books.

      Simple.

    • I like your analogy, In fact it seems people like Mulongoti and others who are perpetually opposing GRZ forget that government no longer budgets for fuel and part of maize subsidies, no wonder they insist on knowing how much is being saved. Like the minister said the money is being channeled to other need sectors of the economy, Yes we have seen quite substantial increase in budget allocation to health. education etc. Therefore, what people should be asking and monitoring is how these funds are being utilized in such sectors. It is a waste of time to be talking about things that are not in the budget.

    • chikwanda is a government minister…all we want is some level of oppenness….this money is available so what are the fiqures….

    • Exellent example but for clarity you need to be a bit more transparent and say 25 was saved and channelled to house and school. There even Matipa and Ndobo can be clear on the benefit of subsidy removal.

    • @8. Good mathematical reasoning!
Actually both Cheeky Wonder and Mulongotiti are right.
Consider the following for argument sake:
If Fuel was K6 per litre before removal of subsidy and K10 after, then K4 was ‘saved’
Similarly, if a 25 kg bag of Unga was k45 before, and K60 after, then K15 was ‘saved’
What Cheeky Wonder forgot was to factor in inflation as a result of high fuel costs.
The end result was a total mess and absolutely no savings!

  9. Mr. M. mulongoti, read this statement carefully, because it seems like you don’t understand Zambian English properly. the minister said, if we didn’t divert subsidies money to other areas, some projects could have suffered, this is the same money GRZ is using for all the projects going on around the Country. I have just used basics in English just for Mulongoti to understand. must I remove DIVERT or SUBSIDIES, I think you know these words Mulongoti! YOU need to rewrite standard six exams.

  10. The minister did explain that money which was meant for subsidies has been channelled towards developmental projects. This has resulted into increased government expenditure as they are now financing more projects.

However the minister needed to be very clear in terms numbers and stating exactly the projects that have been undertaken as a result of these funds.

    Proud Zambia

  11. I remember the days this stu.pit mulongoti was in government he was so annoying. what has confused you this time around? where is your secretariate?

  12. KA Mulongoti now that you have formed a party lets go for a convention & allow other pipo to stand as candidates for party president including yourself so that you lose it to somebody else then turn against your own party and come back to support PF in 2016…what a move..2 years later you will form a church called…BULONGO-BULONGO MINISTIRES CHURCH FOR THE POLITCALLY RETARDED & MULONGOTICALLY NON STOP-DIAHOEREA MOUTHS & HEADLESS CHICKENS….lol

  13. I like Mr mulongoti, as a matter of fact, I like him a lot more than people give him credit for, but these are empty words, by him

Mr Mulongoti, give credit to PF

There is a quote along the lines of ‘A man who goes into a restaurant and blatantly disrespects the servers shows a strong discontent with his own being. Deep down he knows that restaurant service is the closest thing he will ever experience to being served like a king’

You only surface when you claim PF is flawed, don’t criticise sir, offer solutions

    Thanks

  14. What is so hard to understand about this whole issue? Is the money that was supposed to be spent on Maize and fuel subsidies still in the budget? If the answer is NO, then that money is being “SAVED”! Is the money being saved sitting in some bank account somewhere waiting for “God knows what”? If the answer is again NO, then subsidy “SAVINGS” are being spent!

And this is where the confusion seems to be. Those who simply want to raise some unnecessary “political dust” about anything and everything the PF Govt does have seized upon this seemingly innocent omission by Mr. Chikwanda in his statement to gain some political mileage.

I agree, in politics you got to mean what you say, and say what you mean. In other words, be clear with your statements or risk being misunderstood!

  15. I supported the removal of subsidies on consumption but quite frankly I’m utterly disappointed with how these empty tins have gone about it in practice. ..they have simply removed subsidies to pay wages. Let’s us not be cheated that it’s gone to developmental projects if it did. ..they would have been singing about it everyday.
And you expect them to run IDC really laughable.
    Wake up people! !

    • Jay don’t be quick, you have been misled by chaps like mulongoti. Best time to judge pf with regards to subsidy money will be in the next few years, what we should rather be asking chikwanda is which projects are these.? what is the time frame, when do they get to be completed.? so that when that time comes and projects are still in their infancy we can then demand for chikwanda’s head.

    • So you think its Chikwanda’s money for you to sit on your hands and wait? Do you know who are the biggest contributors to tax revenue in Zambia? It you, stop this docility and wake up by keeping them honest through checks and balances.
Only in Zambia can a president leave the country on a 14 day holiday when he has been doing absolutely nothing.
      Wake up!!

    • Jay Jay if you subsidies mealie meal or give more money to people to buy the unsubsidised commoditiies is’nt it the same. The later is better to keep promise of increment of salaries.i would rather we subsidise production e.g inputs and farming equipment than the final product in the line of productiion it just increases demand.

    • @Chinyama
As a gov’t its important to have robost policies and sticking to them you can not claim to be a lean gov’t when you are doing the exact opposite. You can not claim to be pro-business when you are forever increasing the cost of doing business in the country.
You can not be throwing money at wages and other wasteful projects when your budget is supplimented by donors. You have to have bl0ody priorities the previous gov’t worked very hard to service that debt.
It pains me to see someone as incompetent as Chikwanda overseeing our tresuary….you can not use the same mindset you can to create the problems to solve them.
We are not going anyWHERE BUT IN A DOWNWARD DEBT SPIRAL.
      WAKE UP PLEEEEEEEEAAASEEE!!

    • JayJay if you look around like here in Livingstone it’s very difficult to say the govt is not doing well of cause there will be some job on training here and there but generally its development every where you look, here mwandi the opposition is in trouble.PF with se polishing up it a big well done for Livingstone.

  16. Mulongoti apapena watoba 0 pa 100,its you who is confusing yourself.Because ba shikulu ba Chikanda said and i quote:

“The Minister has also notes that government has to this effect increased expenditure to other areas of developmental projects which he says could have suffered if such funds were still being allocated to subsidies. “

Aba ba lawyer ababula ukumonapo mu court bwafya sana

  17. Mulongoti is just politicking. He understands fully what the Minister was saying. If he is confused, then he would be more confused if he ever became president. As the Minister put it, the money that was removed from covering fuel and m/meal subsidies has gone to other areas. It was saved from those items but used on other important areas. So there is no cash to show you somewhere to that represents the savings.

  18. Mulongoti let me break it down for you. GRZ before pf had projects which started as far back as 2008, now pf removes subsidies and the money is instead channelled to those projects which would have stalled if subsidies were not removed.

So instead of saving the money from subsidies its instead being used as we go hence no savings made. If it wasn’t for those projects Mulongoti you wouldn’t have been confused.
    Are you still confused..?

  19. I HAVE ENJOYED READING YOUR COMMENTS AND THEY ARE ALL GOOD COMMENTS BUT PLEASE BE INFORMED THAT BA SHIKULU BA CHIKANDA (CHIKWANDA) IS THE DULLEST FINANCE MINISTER SO FAR IN THE HISTORY OF ZAMBIA. EVEN WHEN HE SERVED AS FINANCE MINISTER UNDER DR KAUNDA’S UNIP GOVERNMENT, HE BEHAVED THE SAME WAY BY MISLEADING BA KK TO REMOVE SUBSIDIES AND PRICES OF COMMODITIES LIKE MEAL-MEAL AND SUGAR WENT UP UNTIL PEOPLE HAD TO RISE AGAINST DR KAUNDA. 20. Mulongoti merely politiking and looking for media attention, when people do that mostly they just speak nonsence.look around for better contributions ..
