The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has questioned government’s commitment towards revising labour laws in the country.

ZCTU president Leonard Hikaumba said government through the Ministry Labour has continued saying existing labour laws are under review but wondered who is reviewing them when the labour movement as a social partner has been left out.

“We shall continue propounding on the need to have revised labour laws. Our Labour ministry has been saying this process is on going, as social partners we wonder who is dealing with that process if we are not involved?,” questioned Mr Hikaumba.

“Our worry is more than 2years down the line of the new government we do not have these revised labour laws and the question is what is the government doing? We need to have these new laws, we should no longer continue lamenting about the poor labour laws when every thing is within the reach of government,” he said.

And Mr Hikaumba said the labour movement is facing numerous challenges due to the changes in the market forces which is affecting the workers negatively.

“We are facing raising unemployment levels, reduced social security provisions, job loses as a result of company closures or relocations and the aggressive challenges brought about because of neo-liberal policies,”

He said the challenges are having an adverse impact on employment relations in the country such as casuallization which has become rife in the country.

Mr Hikaumba said this when he officiated at the launch of the Meanwood General Insurance new legal expense insurance product for the trade union

And the labour movement leader said unions should start exploring new ways of dealing with the challenges.

He further commended Meanwood General Insurance for providing an opportunity to the movement for them to forge ahead in their quest for better working conditions.

  1. This the most useless Trade Union Movement on earth. It cannot fight for the rights of the workers. It is only fit for the dust bin.

    • Probably the most useless trade union president on earth.
From the Chilubas of the day, the Shamendas, to end up with such a Hikaumba in the Sata days is such cues on Zambians.

  2. ….the song doing rounds now is on ‘new constitution’ and everything else shall fall in place…..
…any other ‘cry’ is just boring….

  3. If you visit facebooks for on-line magazines such as ZWD,LT,mwebantu etc.if the headline is on hh,just read comments from names like mwape, mulenga, chanda, mushota, chileshe etc these folks will always give provocative comments even if hh says something sensible.other names ofcourse will comment with brains.on the other hand if the headline is on sata, just read comments from names like mweemba, mutinta, muyunda, lubinda, mwinga etc these too will give provacative comments as opposed to comment using brains even if sata is right.guys we are all zambians and let’s just love each other remain united like we do when chipolopolo is playing.one love!!!

    • The problem is that we have a president without a brain. He can’t see that he has polarised the country with his tribalism, lies and his lack of willingness to show leadership.

  4. Indeed Hikaumba has overstayed in his position as ZCTU prsident. Why?????????????????? They are no serious challenges to that position???????? He is challenging a govt that has been in power for two(02) years only. Whilst him has been in power for over a decade. But what has been doing all along when PF was not in power??? This guys is a joker, basaankwa! This guy must be voted out of that leadership position. Him and his team are a banch of failures. He just talks, talks and talks with no serious action. Honestly, what has he and his team been doing all these years??? Just eating our membership subscription fees thru fake allowances??? And they must all be audited before voted out this year, banyangalakaata ba kabwaa aba!! Watubelesha sana mumbe iwee!!! Kuya beebele nomba…….!!!

  5. This guy and his team have overstayed. They are very incompetent and uno mwaka, kuya beebele imwe ba Hikaumba and your team!

  6. Hikaumba u were so quiet during MMD tenure and all of a sudden u want to be seen to be siding with the workers, why? Is that PF has failed to give u an OFFER U CAN’T REFUSE?

  7. It is true this guy has overstayed. It is high time he left the ZCTU office to others. Wamu yayayaa nao!!! Typical dictator. His he a life president of ZCTU? Since Chiluba left more than 20 years ago, this guy has been ZCTU presido. I think he is another uncle Bob but in a different and cowadice form. Atleast our uncle Bob is very brave and couregous.

  8. Leonard Hikaumba has indeed overstayed since FJT Chiluba left the trade union in 1990 to-day. He is also power angry and a dictator for that matter. Are they no serious challenges, kanshi? Ciino caaka, kuya beebele, Hikaumba!

  9. You should talk about issues he has raised, if you were serious blogus than talking about wheather he has overstayed or not. You dont even no labour matters. If you saying he has been there fro the time Chiluba left, were do you put Shamenda?
