30 Secondary School pupils granted maternity break at Kaoma High School in Western Province

Share

Thirty pupils at Kaoma High School in Western Province have gone on maternity leave in the first term of this year alone.

School Head teacher Jonathan Mukenge said ten pupils who had come from basic schools have proceeded on maternity leave when they were barely in grade ten, an indication that they were pregnant even before joining Kaoma High School.

Mr Mukenge, who made the revelation during a consultative stakeholders’ meeting for the Kaoma District Education Board on Wednesday, said out of the 30 pupils, 12 were day scholars while the other eight were boarders.

He called for the involvement of all stakeholders to curb the problem which has become rife at the institution.

And Kaoma District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Sendoi Mutumba implored stakeholders to come up with an action research to understand the cause of the problem.

Meanwhile, Nkeyema DEBS Florence Hikaumba, who was the co-convener of the meeting, urged parents to take an active role in the input and output of education.

Mrs Hikaumba said parents should realize the value of education for them to see the fruits of their children having gone to school.

She also urged Parents and Teachers’ Associations in school not to over stay in their offices but instead transfer skills and innovations to other people for the purpose of continuation.

  1. Any man who sleeps with a pupil under the age of 18 should be jailed regardless of how themselves are.

This is soft rape and should be condemned by anyone here

    Thanks

    • I vividly remember this song, which I last heard in 1989;
Banana ba Kaoma bahanile.. sikolo, abaya kwa Masolder babulela sinyanja, abaya kwa Masolder babulela sinyanja. Pwacha kafo, nina nipwach side ye, ni na.. nipwach side ye…………………..

    • Please put these horny hornets on birth control for their own good.
The thing with teenage girls is they get into pacts and copy one another!

    • And worse thing is that there is even AIDS, but they still get pregnant before they are 40. Life expectancy in Zambia will come down to 10.

    • Very shallow. What if it is their fellow pupils who did that? How do you just conclude that they were made pregnant by older men?

    • LT!!!!!!!!!!! I fail to understand your logic in how you censor language appearing here. How on earth can u allow such vulgar language as CHIEF JUSTICE’s to appear on your site when mine reading “Ubututu” (simply meaning backwardness), was censored a couple of days ago?

  2. Girls also should be punished somehow, why do they sleep around with men when they know its not the right time! God forbids sex out side marriage. Their dress code affect us, the government must look into this issue.

  3. Im not shocked there is too much prostitution by school girls in kaoma. One time i visited kaoma i stayed at a lodge just near the junction with mongu road. When a guard saw me out side he just came straight and told me he could find school girls for me and requested for a small commision. He didnt even know me, i refussed and then he also talked of elder women. That means a lot in kaoma. Poverty could also be contributing. Any defilement please jail

  4. Don’t bury your heads in the sand and pretend Zambia is really a Christian nation; institute far-reaching family planning programs in schools to curb this threat.

It’s clear they are not using condoms. So, other family planning methods should be included. The “all of the above” approach.

  5. the school authority and parents are to be blamed, juvinile deliquences is everywhere but thats too much for kaoma secondary.shame upon the members of stuff for kaoma secondary

  6. It is likely that these pupils have been impregnated by their fellow pupil school mates…Sad. Lack of extra curricular activities is the cause. If they were kept busy with other things this would be less.

  7. Introduce military-type activities every evening for 2 hours and they will be too tired to keep dates. Every day and engage the meanest but well-disciplined sergeants and corporals. Those chaps have too much energy in them. Those found loitering after hours should be locked up after ba nyowa. No blankets and no breakfast but supper will be there….

  8. The idea of granting maternity leave is very very bad. You thought you were helping the girl child but it has just opened girls legs wider. Teenage pregnancy has no consequence any more! Might as well legalise homosexuality.

Thoroughly study social issues before implementing your decisions. This, to me, was a bad decision.

  9. Most of those pregnant is due to lust and desire for expensive things like cell phones and food. Very retrogressive indeed!

  10. I hope all the men who impregnanted the girls ll be arrested for defilement ,if not then you can as well release kanene

  11. LT, the usage of the word maternity break or leave is wrong and misleading and minimizing illegality as schools have holidays and maternity leaves have benefits provided for in the law. Let’s fight early marriages and school underage sex. A pupils who falls pregnant is simply disturbed.

    • under what so ever these will not be prevented as long as the so called girl child policy is in place. There is no law which prevents pupils having sex while at school. These useless NGO’s have destroyed morels of young girls.

  12. Teenage pregnancy has always been there and will always be there. The onus is on preventing your daughter from being the next statistic. What ever measures put in so long they are man made will not work. There are various reasons that propel teenage girls to have primarital sex. This vice can only be managed by a multisectral approach involving the church, parents(community), Ngoes, government, local leaders and where applicable chiefs. I also suggest reversion to the old policy of expulsion of child fathers and mothers. The time I was at Primary and Secondary school these incidences were low because of that rule.
Women should play a key role in preventing this vice.

  13. introduce condoms at the school.Put them in toilets so that the pupils can collect them and use them where ever/when ever they want.

  14. That is the difference between muslim and chrstianiity such a thing can never happen in a muslim country lets face it we the christians are responsible for hiv and aids

  15. Fellow parents let’s get concerned with this alarming situation of 30 pupils getting pregnant! The school re-entry policy is being abused because girls know that even if they fall pregnant a school place is there after delivery. But what they should know is that very rare that getting a proper married afterwards becomes problematic especially if the man concerned for the earlier pregnancy is not ready to take her own as wife. The end result is having a number of children each with a father, which is shameful indeed! A word to all girls is that never fall a victim by copying wrong things and also minimize on lust of expensive things that your parents cannot afford.
