Kwacha has been losing value since UNIP era , why so much noise under PF-Guy Scott

Vice President Dr Guy Scott

VICE President Guy Scott has said the Zambian Kwacha has losing value from the time of United National Independence Party (UNIP) and Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) and it was strange that there was too much noise on the currency under the Patriotic front (PF) Government.

Speaking in Livingstone at Protea Hotel today when he officially opened the first ever 10-day conference for Heads of Mission abroad, Dr Scott said that this is the best period for farmers to export and get more dollars.

“In the UNIP Government, the Kwacha used to be K2 to the British pound but it slipped over the long period. The Kwacha also fell also under the MMD Government. As a farmer, the best farming period is when the Kwacha is weak so that you export abroad and get more dollars,” Dr Scott said.

Dr Scott also took a swipe at online media for publishing falsehood about the country. Dr Scott said the business of accusing leaders to be Satanists as well as adulterers was inaccurate and uncalled for.

“What is happening in the social media of Zambia it is worse than a village gossip.

As ambassadors and High Commissioners, you be more relaxed and confident of the country and also avoid being stressful when you read these lies about us,” Dr Scott said.

He said from the time he was born, people had been telling him that Zambia was going to dogs.

“I have been looking for dogs for 70 years from the time I was born and I can’t see the dogs,” Dr Scott said.

Dr Scott said he found gaps in a number of missions he visited abroad in terms of dealing with false and biased information especially in the social media.

“We should be more prepared on a number of issues and one of them is a general human rights issue that keeps on coming up where we are accused of abusing on the Public Order Act.Over the last few months, there is no one in the opposition who has spent more than a night in jail and there is no state of emergency that has been introduced,” Dr Scott said.

He said the PF Government record in terms of human rights protection in Zambia had been excellent.

About 35 Zambian ambassadors and High Commissioners across the globe are attending the conference under the theme ‘Zambia at 50: enhancing the sound and prudent management of resources in missions abroad’.

The objectives of the conference were to appraise the Zambian Heads of Mission on current national and international issues as well as to enlighten them on the internal audits circle and public accounts committee matters.

Other objectives are to improve the operations and management of resources in our missions abroad and to enhance collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Lusaka and Missions abroad.

    • I agree with you Sikote people have always been saying that the country is going to dogs for as long as i can remember & we always ends up putting any individual with the loudest noise into office. When people wanted to replace KK they chose a loudest short man with a sophisticated accent who came with his trademark “Are you Zambians willing to sacrifice? The hour has come !”The short man was soon found wanting and they desperately jumped ship to support a man they called a cabbage.Desparation again caught up with the voters and then they went for a man who married a woman young enough to be his grandchild. Now the same fate has caught up with their “dont kubeba messiah” they want to replace him with an arrogant man who used to walk barefooted to school and got rich from mines…

    • …mines privatization. If the bitter and arrogant man by any means wins they will soon realize that he wasn`t whom they thought he was because his only interest was to get into office without having a proper plan or roadmap of what he wanted to do for the country once elected. At that moment they will start calling for his head resulting into them making the same mistake of voting into power another loudest guy in town and the cycle will continue. What goes around comes around indeed !!

    • @Saulosi, the thing was good, but you just spoiled totally. This is going to be a worse week ever, I think we even loose football against Japan.

    • this muzungu belle is associated to the witch kabimba and mubembe.why can’t he be a satanist?birds of the same feathers move togather……

    • @ Saulosi. I think your contributions would make sense if you could be level headed, leave your PF biases aside and see things as they are. More so if you would not allow your deep rooted hatred for HH not to cloud your reasoning. This muzungu opusa of yours is so naive to tell us that there’s nothing with the Kwacha losing value to major currencies at a gallop. We are making noise, rightly so, because this fall of the Kwacha is unprecedented in the history of this country. Sometimes silence is golden when you have nothing sensible to say on serious issue as this kwacha fall is.

    • Scot should realise that there is a tell to be told about the past Governments: UNIP failed the Zambian economy hence the Kwacha falling from K2 against the British £, to the levels of K250 or so when the MMD took office. It is not desputed that the MMD inherited a failed economy and the fact that the left it with some foreign reserves to a tune of $3b and a relatively stable Kwacha says that they were a success in their own right. How you have taken us back to the UNIP days and all you can say is that “UNIP did it, MMD did it, so we will also DID it”. Your PF swore that they only reason Zambians were poors was because of MMD corruption and economic mismanagement. So why are you comparing yourselves to the failures of the past when you promised economic emancipation. Failure for sure…

    • A true signing of total failure. MMD held the currency stable year in and year out. And for you due to high leves of incompetence you have undone everything in just 12 months. We told you, PF has no economic policies to drive the country forward.

By the way, Scott, where do you take the comment by Bob Sichinga that Kwacha will be as strong as it was in the 60’s after rebasing? Has you mind been rebased as well iwe Scott?

    • Fellow Country men and Women, What Dr. Scott has revealed from the above rantings is Pure Psychosis

Psychosis is a disease that causes elderly people to lose touch with reality. Psychosis symptoms include hallucinations, delusions (weird beliefs), and impaired decision making.

    • SAU
I like your book, this is a man who used to walk 20 plus kilometres barefooted to get to his school, bitterness knows him by name, an anti Christ .pitful !!

    • I would have expected a more intelligent argument from Dr Scott than what he has put forward. He does put PhD holders to shame at times. Well its full circle, back to UNIP days, one just has to look at the appointments and policies, any wonder the Kwacha is depreciating? Bwana you are an economist and just because the kwacha depreciated in the UNIP days, you the Vice President dont see anything wrong with the kwacha depreciating now. By any chance could it be as a result of poor policies?

    • President: dementia
      Vice President: dementia
      Cabinet: Vipuba
What sort of country are we kanshi??????????????????????????

    • Its normally rare to find a PhD holder this dull from Cambridge. This must be a world record

    • Wow mukote sikote has admitted failure and compares PF to UNIP. But to be honest, PF is the worst government to ever rule Zambia. What makes it the worst government, is the fact its trying to bring back the tyranny we fought hard to remove in the 90s.

PF should ask themselves this question; how did Mwanawasa manage to improve and stabilise the Kwacha from K10,000 to £1 in 2001 to K5,000 to a £1 by the time he died?

Part of the answer lies in the fact Sata was out of government. He is the one who spoiled things in MMD under Chiluba. Now that he is in power, he has made a complete mess of our once thriving economy.PF and Sata are a bunch of hyenas. PF needs to get rid of Sata if things are to improve. With him on top, things will continue to worsen. Sata is a very selfish man…

  1. As much as that maybe the case, Dr. Scott, how do you explain the sudden depreciation just under 6 months.? Is it because of the MMD as well? Ain’t you due for retirement Dr. Scott..!

    • That’s what i hate most about our current Govt. Instead of providing solutions and policy direction, they always respond by blaming (or at least comparing with) the previous regimes.
Will that solve our problems sure? If the Kwacha was losing value in UNIP and MMD, was it desirable?
More over, I was young in the UNIP govt and was in school in the first decade of the MMD regime but cannot remember when the Kwacha traded with the US Dollar at the current prevailing rates.
PF should always remember that we voted for them because we had seen some errors in the previous govt. Their duty is not to remind us of those errors but to correct them, otherwise the change we voted for will do us no good.
If there are some economic challenges, they should just explain to the nation. Shame!

    • Akuchuleni baiche. You the young Turks who voted en masse for the Patriotic Fools, the Public ****ups, the Power Failures, the Paya Farmers, that Ukwa and team were just a group of liars with no idea of what to do with mother Zambia. You have now learnt life the hard way and you will be wiser next time. Listen to us elders when we talk.

  2. This coloniolist is amazing. People are hurting and he mocks them like that.

This shit of a pig is a joker. I just paid K70,000 to by an Altis corollar instead of K55,000 because of this shit Kwacha. Which Oxford University College did this mother father attend.

  3. enough of insults from this muzungu opusa…Zambians lets wake up and refuse to be reduced to NOISE MAKERS OR YAPPERS…

  4. Scott is that why you are seating back and watching the free baskop of the Kwacha? Next time Zambians vote for a dog, it will be much better than having these dunderheads in power. At least a dog you can pat, tame etc not these ones…

  5. Kwena we are being ruled by ba mumbwe (foxes) with absolutely no sense of shame. Is this how you can treat people that entrust you to govern a country? Kutumpa sana uku ( this is stupidity of the highest degree)

  6. yes the kwacha has been depreciating but not at this speed when PF came into power. It shows something is terribly wrong this his regime. Things are still getting worse. All manufacturing companies are in the hands of foreigners. Even things like sweets we can make.

  7. Iwe muzungu opusa, you are very shallow minded and you have no basic understanding of simple economics. Your useless government has killed the kwacha. And tell me how many farmers export their produce and where?

You cant see the dogs because you are the dog.

  8. Good afternoon

What goes up naturally comes down, and vice versa. Every currency has it’s ups and downs, it is kind of silly to think that a nation will go down because of a weak currency.

What matters is that the government remains consistent with it’s policies and keeps it foot on the pedal. PF government needs to do more in terms of protecting their national wealth from being recklessly ripped off by foreign companies and the rest will fall in place.

    • What policies are you blabbing about? Is it PF (Permanent Failure) Government we are talking about? PF and Policy? Be serious.

    • That is totally dull thinking naimwe. They should remain consistent with their policies when their policies are the ones killing the country? It’s like doing a chemical experiment that explodes and then you decide you are going to continue the same experiment with the same ingredients until the explosions bring down your lab! What thinking is this? What mystical power does PF have that erodes even commonsense from people we once held in high esteem? Are you seriously agreeing with Guy Scott’s statement right now? This man is basically saying they will do nothing about this freefall because it has been happening since UNIP! Seriously you agree with this? What about the speed of the depreciation? I don’t remember us ever making the news with regards the bad perfomance of our currency…

    • “@ it is silly to think a country will go down because of its currency”. OMG, ****** we..!! Have you ever heard of a country called “Zimbabwe”? Chicolour iwe!!

  9. The sudden noise is because unlike the other governments, yours is breaking records everyday and clearly this does not worry your gov’t. The previous gov’ts countered the fall of the Kwacha and worked hard to keep it at bay while you are just letting it fall. These are not words we voted to hear from people we gave authority to manage our economy. I’m annoyed

    • Hon. Scott, the People are NOT making “noise” but stating facts and not PF election gimmicks.
If you are not happy to hear complains, please keep mum and stop blabbing.

  10. I think this man who is supposed to be a beacon of some shred of intelligence in PF is missiong the point. Why does he want to major on the obvious. Ofcourse we know that ALL currencies and I mean ALL currecies from 1964 have been victims of inflation and even the mighty dollar and pount have depreciated over the years.

The issue he is NOT Deperiatiation, but rather the RATE OF DEPRECIATION. That is what we are making noise about. Can you please address that and not the other non issue that nobody raised and later on made noise about. Ignore this at your own peril. Yes if you are an exported oriented economy, weak Kwacha is great, but can that be said about our growing economy that imports a lot of inputs. Think wisely please

    • @ MMD Chief Bootlicker – I agree with you. Scott has trivialised the issue here. While it is true that a weak Kwacha is good for export, the majority of businesses in Zambia are import oriented. We therefore need to safe guard these businesses from collapse…because what will happen is that they will hike prices, that will reduce demand for their products which will drive them into the ground.

Ba Sata has instructed the BOZ to explain the Kwacha fall…I am patiently waiting for a comprehensive answer and strategy from the technocrats rather than this wobbly statement from the vice President. We need the Kwacha to level off at at least K4.50 to a dollar – that will be good for both exporters as well as importers and tot he Consumer.

  11. Strange, i had so much respect for Guy Scott but he is doing a good job getting me to think its misplaced. I have seen a lot of careless statements from him. Its like he’s getting more and more careless or is it the real dictatorial colours coming out steadily? At a certain level in society, diplomacy is cardinal. One needs to be able to tell a person to go to hell and they actually look forward to the trip, not the way he is handling matters.

    • Bullu there must be something wrong with your brain. Did you say you had a lot of respect for Scott? Man say that again, you must be nuts. Scott has never ever been sensible since he became Veep and is a laughingstock to all sensible and well meaning Zambians. You are the only senseless Zambian perhaps. Scott is a negative shadow of an intelligent white man. Only God knows where he came from to come and be found among Zambians. He is a curse to Zambia.

  12. Yes Scott is right but its worse under PF. Even the George Bush $ is trading differently to the Barack Obama $ and the difference is very minute.
BwanabScott, $=K7.5 and what is PF doing about it with Chikwanda and Gondwe at the helm of financial misappropriation?

  13. In the sixtys the kwacha was sitted, in the seventys it was standing, in the eightys it started walking, in the ninetys it started jogging, fast forward 2014 the kwacha has become mad and it is sprinting aimlessly. It is like no one has the remedy,oh cry my beloved kwacha.

  14. What a simplistic and irresponsible way to explain this worrying matter in the economy. this time we are being ruled by proper clowns trying to hide behind a finger. this racist clown must think Zambians are demented to take in the drivel that he spews out. Its bad politics to have a man with such a low regard of Zambians holding the important office of the Vice Presidencey!

  15. The capt steered the ship deep see only to discover they crew had no compass. The capt is about to die. His second, a stupit white man has pankansass desease. Wht nex gentlement . These quaks are soon dying leavin us in hot sheet.

    • Ki k ki ki ki ki………………gentlement…..ki ki ki….. hot sheet…….ha ha ha.

And you have to laugh if you are not to be totally disgusted with a hopeless response from the two most powerful men who have washe their hands off the economic crisis. Sata says, it is Gondwe who must explain. Scott says, there is nothing to explain and the devaluation is ok for his government!!

Incredible…….! So the Kwacha continues to nose dive and reducing money in our pockets. No jobs. High taxes (Duty and Import VAT has more than doubled since PF). High prices – visit Shoprite, Spar and Indian shops and even Salaula.

Next week, ZESCO increases electricity. Soon fuel to increase. This is a real donkey kubeba.

  16. Simple logic bwana Scott, because now the depreciation has accelarated without any sustained apprecaition.

  17. Very dull white man- how can he celebrate a loss of value of money.Shouldnt we express our disappointment after such loss

  18. After convincing a pretty woman to damp the first guy and cling to him on a promise that he will move her from Garden Compound to Kabulonga, the man only managed to rent her a cabin in Bauleni.
    Then the woman complains…
Woman: Honey what can we do to move to Kabulonga, life is too hard for me here.
Man: Are you homeless for you to cry for a house?
Woman: But this is worse than my previous accommodation and standard of living.
Man: After all even that guy was just renting you a house in Garden and you were even sharing ka toilet naba Landlord.
But you promised to take me to Kabulonga otherwise i wouldn’t have accepted your proposal.
Man: That was just a proposal rhetoric…….
If elections were commercial contracts, most of them would have been avoided on grounds of…

  19. The vice president should not start looking for excuses for their failures. Has he already forgotten that they came into office following their campaign promises that they would solve all of Zambia’s problems in particular the economy.
Forget about UNIP and get on with the job. The PF failures are everywhere.

  20. Pissing on Zambians and telling them its raining! Shame on the all the English don’t think we don’t remember that you looted this country!

  21. Scott just get on with the Job, You asked for it, please put more money in the pockets and give us better schools and hospitals. Otherwise start packing, Zambians, like Malawians are tolerant but cannot be taken for granted.
    Ask RB and JB(Joyce Banda)!

  22. Fellow Country men and Women, What Dr. Scott has revealed from the above rantings is Pure Psychosis

Psychosis is a disease that causes elderly people to lose touch with reality. Psychosis symptoms include hallucinations, delusions (weird beliefs), and impaired decision making.

  23. Not worth commenting on!!! I have better things to use my brains on than comment on this crap of a statement.

  24. @ ZP you have really made my day and I will knock off still laughing. Back to the topic, this Vice President claims to have a PDH in what? It must be in cow mad disease. Simply put or suffice to say, you have reached a dead end and there are no more lies to peddle around. Fire Gondwe and Chikwanda and return magande and Fundanga the real men to sort out your mess bwana. Fumwenipo insono AND ACCEPT THE INNEVITABLE YOU HAVE FAILED FULLSTOP.

  25. This man is very dull. Please investigate how he managed to get a PhD with this level of incompetence. He cant feel it becos everything is bought for him.

  26. this statement by VP is counterproductive and retrogressive an oppostion to development. in the first instance relook at your promises, then understand that each party in govt must ensure they build on what others have done. so does it mean if UNIP failed in this economic area, then you can or shud also fail and there is no problem. thats strange from a person of VP status. we are then not developing

  27. ‘..as a farmer, I enjoy when the Kwacha loses value against the Dollar because I benefit more…’
I never thot I would one time hear someone of the VICE PRESIDENT status utter such words ever in my life time……
Mathematically, you don’t get more Dollars, you still get the same amount of dollars. The only advantage is.. you purchase more Kwacha at harvest/trading time than what you spent at planting time assuming the salaries of the farm labourers remain stagnant..But why am I wasting time explaining this..I’m disappointed to say the least.
Its good that I was not part of the audience. If it was someone not HEAVLY guarded, I would have quietly stood up and walk to the podium and WHACK him HARD into the face, again and again…whack whack whhaaaack the hell out of…..

    • @ scrutinizerer well said,i ld v joined u in slapping scott until he got his senses back, thats if he has any to begin with

  28. What a coterie of dunderheads, nitwits and filthy megalomaniacs we entrusted to run the affairs of this country!

  29. I quote”May 31, 2014
His Excellency Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata
President of the Republic of Zambia
    State House,
    Lusaka
    Dear Mr. Sata.
OPEN LETTER TO PROTEST THE SIEGE OF BAROTSELAND BY OCCUPYING
    ARMED ZAMBIAN SECURITY FORCES
It is with a deeply troubled mind and soul that I write to you an open letter of protest to the
Zambian government in the strongest terms against the siege of Barotseland by occupying armed
Zambian security forces. While this letter is addressed to you, however, in recognition of the
widely perceived comatose currently obtaining at this level of government, which is responsible
for loss of direction in your country in the conduct of public affairs, I have decided to
particularly draw the attention of those members of Cabinet directly seized with the…

  30. BA LT DO YOU REALLY EDIT YOUR ARTICLES BEFORE PUBLISHING THEM FOR INTERNATIONAL READERSHIP? ALMOST EVERY SENTENCE IN YOUR ARTICLES HAS A GRAMMATICAL, PUNCTUATION, (TITLE- NAME IT), ERRORS. I MEAN, ENGLISH IS NOT OUR LANGUAGE BUT WE HAVE CHOSEN TO USE IT. SO, YOU MUST STRIVE TO RIGHT IT CORRECTLY, JUST LIKE ANY LANGUAGE. SURELY, IT’S LIKE READING AN ARTICLE WRITTEN BY A GRADE 4 SCHOOL KID READING LUSAKA TIMES ARTICLES. IT’S UNBELIEVABLE HOW MANY ERRORS THERE ARE IN JUST ONE SMALL PARAGRAPH OF YOUR ARTICLES. CAN’T YOU BOTHER TO SEND YOURSELVES TO SCHOOL AT LEAST TO GO AND COMPLETE YOUR GRADE 12s NOW THAT YOU HAVE MADE A BIT OF MONEY?

  31. Indeed now I understand why HH called this chap muzungu wopusa! It is very sad to read this from a so called leader. Scott should be embarrassed of himself to say the least. Even when we have given a benefit of doubt to these kaponyas, we still get utter nonsense from them. Three years onwards we still have this kinda talk from the highest office. The chaps are simply lunatics bend on ruining the country. Sorry to say but I wish Sata could kick the bucket so we could go for election and kick these guys out of govt!

  32. I thought Dr Scott was educated but, this is worrying.

Kwacha being adverse, is a bad thing whether through UNIP, PF or MMD.

The fact that the Kwacha has devalued 31% in 3 years. It is cheaper for foreigners to come in Zambia and buy anything they want (surely this is not good), as you would want Zambians to be doing this.

It is also much more expensive now for all parents who have children studying abroad to care of them, to buy an Air ticket, well to buy anything produced abroad or which has raw materials from abroad.

This cant be good Dr Scot.

Be careful, I am teetering on the edge here sir.

    Thanks

  33. PF or whatever political party (PP for short- coz that’s what they all are, PP’s) have long used this excuse to cover their arses. It’s a rather smug statement and disingenuous at best; something to be expected from the political sphere and seems to permeates every party as they are mostly made up of the same group that was part of the problem in the first place. They are just doing it under a differently named political party. But we (Zambians) seemingly embrace the status quo and accept these inept leaders perhaps hoping that they have changed or blindingly accepting that their ‘experience’ as politicians makes them better. It doesn’t. They are more inclined to repeat the same mistakes because they have no motivation to come up with workable solutions nor do they care to.

  34. This is a very dangerous response! Just because other people have been stealing does not make it right for you to do the same.

  35. yaba!! bathi ichi ee!!! ndiye ba VP aba??!
so you mean there is not difference between pf and MMD and UNIP before that?
So why is the same mouth boasting that pf is the best government ever? this muppet is really taking us for the f.ools we are

  36. This white man has really shaken the hornets nest. For Mushota, of all people to castigate the muzungu opusa, is a bad omen. These PFers have reached the end of the road and are therefore at their wit’s end. The writting is on the wall. While they keep on parroting a borrowed saying, ‘we are in a hurry to develop the country’, we, as the electorate, are in a hurry to remove them!

  37. Now here is a man called a Vice President who seems to need more medical attention than his boss. This does not require a medical board, it is a confirmed case. There is a problem.

  38. though kwacha has bin loosing value, wit you(PF) it’s worse and your statement shows that u’ve totally failed. jst resign, you bunch of failures. we voted u in to redeem it not to start lamenting over it.

  39. This Scot he does not why they were voted in office, if he knew he would make such remarks. And does know the price of tomatoes, Dstv packages, fuel etc. he just enjoying our tax money..

  40. With all due respect Me. Vice President, the Kwacha was stable during the last few administrations – steadily losing value (casuse Zambia does not produce anything, etc). But in this one-term administration of the PF; the Kwacha is in free-fall. Losing value uncontrollably.

    #OneZambia

  41. Saulosi, son of a cadre. SATAna aleya, mwalabwela muma Diplomatic Missions umo mwafisama to come and confront a noise diving kwacha.

Indeed the Kwacha has become mad like SataNa and Guy Scrotum.
