Lusaka City Council Deputy Mayor Portifer Tembo says government is determined to ensuring that lawlessness being exhibited by some bus operators at Intercity Bus Terminal in Lusaka is dealt with urgently.

Mr Tembo said the Consumer Protection Unit (CPU) in collaboration with other relevant government wings has been receiving numerous complaints from people using public transport at Intercity and many other bus stations in the country.

He said this today at Intercity Bus Terminus during the launch of the competition and Consumer Protection Commission booklet in Lusaka.

He said it is wrong for bus conductors and drivers to be harassing travellers adding that the relevant wings of government will be left with no option but to intervene in the matter.

And Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) Chairperson Kelvin Bwalya urged members of the public to report cases of harassment from bus proprietors with valid evidence to the commission.

Mr Bwalya said government wants to see to it that traders and anyone using public transport is allowed to conduct his or her businesses without any disturbances.

  1. …..’members of the public to report cases with valid evidence…?’….non starter…..the best option is for CCPC to send undercover ‘commuters’ to the station and do the appropriate. These guys are very comfortable in their air conditioned offices….for once, go out into the fields.
They have got the info about harassment, let them do their own investigation without involving us travellers. CCPC want us commuters to be moving with video cameras to capture the evidence, there after use you as a witness in the invent that the case goes to court….. and the case takes two years to be disposed off….eeish no way. Just do your job guys.

  2. No two ways, well said # 1. The travelling public have sent the SOS, they need help. You can respond by throwing back the challenge to victims. Get down to do the rest yourself, get first hand information ,wait for no one to prove it to both you and the perpetrators. How long will people complain before you swing into action? Restore order for the people, Its the right thing to do.

  3. How have the oprators abused travellers? just making noise these guys: It is the pf cadres causing confusion and abusing the operators!

  4. Mr deputy Lusaka Mayor you are not the right person to talk about law and order. Can you tell the nation the truth the one giving plots along the main railline from Misisi to Chawama. That is your constituence and you stay near the railine in cook compond.
