Fifteen students have left Zambia for four-year university study in India after being awarded scholarships by Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).
The students were seen off at the Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport in Ndola by KCM General Manager for Sustainability Howard Chilundika and other senior company staff, parents and well-wishers.
The group will join 15 others currently studying in various mining-related disciplines in India, after they were awarded KCM scholarships previously. Two others are studying medicine in Namibia.
They will study mechanical, chemical and electrical engineering and instrumentation at the Vellore Institute of Technology, one of India’s top universities.
Speaking prior to their departure Mr Chilundika said: “KCM is proud of the achievements by the students who successfully completed their A’ level study in November 2013 at Simba School in Ndola through KCM sponsorship.”
“The company is proud because all the students achieved extremely good results in their A’ level study. KCM is aware that the sponsorship will bring wide benefits to the company and the country, which currently has skills gaps in mining.”
He told the students, “you must be good ambassadors and be focused in your study so that you can come back with the expertise required to help develop the mining industry and the economy of Zambia.”
Mr Chilundika said the scholarships, which are awarded to students who score high marks, from KCM schools in Chingola and Chililabombwe, were intended to develop pool of competent mining professionals for KCM and Zambia. The company pays for tuition, accommodation, books, laptops, out of pocket allowances and travel for the students.
KCM runs two schools, which it has expanded from primary level at the time of privatization in 2004, to full secondary level providing education to over 2,000 pupils. The schools’ enrolment has doubled over the last nine years.
Show us the list coz I know Kambwili gave you a list of cadres who are not genuinely qualified
all of them have connections with some big fish.. its how things work in zed.. thers no legitimate stuff…
You kidding me?
Why not the UK were all the INDIANS are forcing to come
Your country is backwards
Oh wait,,, I am not sure we would accept them anyway
I hate zambia
Ooops
Thanks
The natives will be fo@led by this gesture….KCM should just pay the monies they owe us back dated from 2009 in tax.
True Jay Jay, we are the only Race that is easily duped, when there’s hard evidence heinous Crimes are being perpetrated against us.
K.C.M, should pay back all the money they STOLE from us, as we are capable of funding our citizens from the returned taxes. Tax evasion is a HUGE Crime = (Economic Sabotage)
Zambian’s are now jumping over hoops celebrating “3 Students” being sent to Sub-Standard institutions of higher learning.
This is similar to a Chief who Celebrated, being given a mirror & beads, for 50 Able African’s – (SLAVES), many moons ago.
The Rhodes Scholarship is a similar case, where Black people Celebrate being awarded this Scholarship, when the money was made via the Brutality, Sacrifice, & Blood of their Ancestors.
SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!!!
Our Coward P.F. Leaders are the “New Chiefs” Celebrating Mirrors & Beads, for the Blood of Zambian’s.
How else does one explain their “NO ACTION”, when Vendata “Anal Argawal” let the Cat out of the bag??
The Secrecy behind our leaders leaving the country, is all to conceal Argawals bribes in offshore accounts.
As J.J says Wake Up Zambian’s!!
Does this sponsorship make up for the kcm video?
Very good analysis
The agenda here is to train these guys to come and take care of technological and engineering operational challenges within KCM, so let this not take our eyes off the ball. It doesn’t in any way have anything to do with evaded tax KCM owe us.
So while kcm continues to take care of its future , its also critical that it honours its obligations
Don’t be fooled when the Indians took over KCM they found a pool of UK and US ZCCM trained engineers and mangers. Most were hounded out or frustrated until they left. Do not be deceived Indians are not your friends !
Wake up how long has KCM been in Zambia?
It’s so painful and mind rending that KCM gets away without paying tax and yet boasts massive monthly profits from our mines! 500 million USA dollars!
Pay us the right taxation and we as a country through the treasury will be able to send our students to even better universities and not to your “Choice University ” where they will be brainwashed. This nonsense about Corporate Social Responsibility is the worst form of corruption. We saw how Mopani funded township road constructions in some copperbelt town after being exposed. We also saw Zambia Sugar giving students scholarships after being exposed. If i was working at ACC, this would be part of evidence for prosecution for it is an indirect way of accepting guilty.
KCM is run by mafias and will try to do this as a way of blinding masses that they are doing what Levy wanted mining companies to do. Back to #1 Kabwimbwili is not so naive to bring his name in the media again as this will not be good for him and PF. KCM has it’s way of making sure the people do not see it supporting those whose relatives belong to PF.
3: anything happening whether good or bad always is PF . Zambians talk too much and like speculating, exaggerating to make a story out of nothing. Too lazy to focus on what can be done to better our brothers, sisters and our children and their children as founding fathers did for us. Free education, hospitals. Better infrustractures in all sectors of the economy sphere. This can happen when you support the govt knowing zambia has no money
” Fifteen students have left Zambia for four-year university study in India after being awarded scholarships by Konkola Copper Mines (KCM). ”
$500,000,000.- buys you a lot more than 15 scholarships to India.
Imagine how many schools and universities could be built in Zambia for $500,000,000.- per year.
That’s what Anil Agarwal of KCM claims he makes out of KCM every year, ‘plus $1,000,000,000.-‘.
So let’s get serious.
HOWARD CHILUNDIKA the TONGA BULL who was fired at RDA because of staeling money meant for road contracts is at KCM oh my foot, don’t preach UPND to the copperbelt lest KCM Sponsored students. Indeed KCM is run by maffias he is General manger SUSTAINABILITY meaning his score at KCM was to let them hide profits and not pay tax to GRZ and PF government for SUSTAINABILITY OF KCM and his JOB
Stop lying iwe. Howard has never worked for the RDA. He has always worked in the mines. You are confusing him with some other Chilundika, Erasmus I think. Get your facts straight!! Your tribal tirade at an innocent man only serves to reduce the reliability of on-line publications.
They have done something sensible for a change.
Image building just unleashed
Indians are generally criminals when its comes to loot.
