Chief Munkanta of the Chishinga people of Kawambwa district has castigated opposition Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) President Nevers Mumba for ignoring traditional etiquette.

ZANIS in Kawambwa reports that chief Chishinga is upset that Dr Mumba held a political rally in his chiefdom without paying a courtesy call on him.

The Chief says it is sad for a man aspiring to be president of the nation to ignore traditional etiquette.

Chief Munkanta wondered why Dr Nevers Mumba ignored him when even Republican President Michael Sata respects chiefs by paying a courtesy call on them whenever he is in their area.

The chief said this when Luapula Province Minister Benson Kapaya accompanied by Patriotic Front Luapula Province Chairman Nixon Chilangwa paid a courtesy call on him yesterday.

Chief Chishinga said he only learnt about Dr Mamba’s rallies when his subjects informed him that the MMD president held a meeting to drum up support for the party candidate contesting in the Kawambwa ward local government elections scheduled for August, 19, 2014 in Kawambwa Central constituency.

And Patriotic Front Luapula Province Chairman Nixon Chilangwa introduced Mwenya Mwila the candidate contesting the Kawambwa Ward Local Government elections on the Patriotic Front ticket to the Chief.

The Kawambwa ward seat fell vacant after the imprisonment of the area ward Councilor Chansa Manyetela.

Mr Manyetela was jailed for three years for misappropriation of building materials procured under the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) for the construction of A classroom block at Kawambwa Primary School.

But when contacted for a comment by ZANIS in Lusaka today MMD National Secretary Muhabi Lungu said he was not in Luapula with Dr Nevers Mumba .

Mr Lungu however referred all queries to Raphael Nakacinda the Special Assistant to Dr Mumba whose phone went unanswered .

  1. Let’s flip the coin here. Does the chief pay a courtesy call on Mumba whenever he visits Lusaka? I do not think it is a crime nor is it absolutely necessary to ‘pay’ a courtesy call on anyone other than the police to obtain a permit. The problem with our chiefs is that any visit is must come with a brown envelop. SHAME!
