GRZ regrets 2019 flopped bid

Share

The Government has regretted Zambia’s flopped bid to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

CAF announced on Saturday that Cameroon would host the 2019 AFCON.

Sports deputy minister Christopher Mulenga described Zambia’s failure to win the bid as unfortunate.

CAF further awarded Ivory Coast the rights to host the 2021 AFCON and Guinea the 2023 tournament.

“This is very unfortunate that all the three tournaments have been given to West Africa countries,” Mulenga said.

He added:”We were expectant and everyone was expectant that the Africa Cup could come to this side of the continent but it is unfortunate that it has been given to West Africa.”

This is Zambia’s third attempt to host the Africa Cup.

  1. …’mulenga described the failure to win the bid as unfortunate..’…as unfortunate..??..no, it should read…’as expected..’

  2. I really dont understand what is unfortunate about the failure. A blogger going by the name “Wanu Ngwee” has hit the nail on the head as to the possible resons behind the failure. I would be surprised if Govt hasnt received feedback from CAF.
We have two stadiums in the whole country. Take away Lusaka and accommodation becomes inadquate if not nonexistant, yet our Minister and Govt cant see that. They seem to think that Zambia has it all. Where are we going to accommodate 16 teams and officials plus there fans? I think sometimes we are delutional in believeing that Zambia is “developed” and I always argue that we mis use the word development in this country.

  3. Co hosting with Zim is the way to go. At least we can manage hosting half the teams in Lusaka and Ndola with less ado. Air shuttles just between 2 towns. Go for it Kambwili its not too late. You may just regain some respect. Kalu seems to have given up. Get him out of the picture.

    • I agree with you about co-hosting with ZIM. This could reduce our risk. The only problem is that FAZ in its current form has not capacity for planning and logistics. Our Minister of sport is egocentric.

    • Yeah, no one took the co-hosting seriously especially that we did the WTO 2013 together. Boy this is one country and the bid could have gone as RHODESIA instead!

That way nobody would have realised that Mugabe as also part of the deal!

  4. Kambwili has known what unfairness is and how painful it can be to people. He has also told us that it is unacceptable. His conclusion is CAF is dominated by people of the same region- West Africa. This is how majority of Zambians feel whjen it comes to Zambia in terms of government positions like Permanent Secretaries, Diplomats, Ministers and those in parastals bodies. There is presence of many from one region. It is not “fair and it is unacceptable” That is why people of Barotseland want to pull out from Zambia.. I hope Kambwili will agree with tjem and infact support people of Barotseland. How about that?????

  5. I thank CAF for denying Zambia the opportunity to host the games. I am relieved. Our country is still very immature and stunted. We don’t seem to get anywhere. They have actually saved us from embarrassing ourselves to the world. Right now I can’t relax not knowing what the creature we sent to New York will do or has already to humiliate us even further.

    • @fake zambian lawyers

Calm down, don’t risk bursting a blood vessel in your brain. CAF is actually doing us a favour by shunning us. Which head of state has headed our way since PF? That should give even you a clue what a disaster our nation is!? Don’t you agree?

  6. Challenging the decision of CAF is one option. One, how is it possible for West Africa to net all the three consecutive games in a row? Does that action amount to regionalism, despite the good words? Zambia is here in Southern Africa. Even including the Algeria situated in North Africa can improve the image of CAF. Two, the games are speaking French and nothing but French. What is wrong with including one English speaking host country along side two French speaking countries? Three, infrastructure is available in Zambia. Where there is need for further improvements, then the FAZ was making the necessary preparations in an expeditious manner. Zambia deserves to host the games. CAF is being vain. Issa is too insensitive to be go scot-free.

  7. Zambia has not developed sports infrastructures far below SA. Massive improvements are required or forget hosting any of these competitions.
