Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) has said that it will meet on Saturday to chart the way forward on the forthcoming by-election. Commenting on remarks by a faction within the MMD calling itself National Taskforce for the Reconstruction of the MMD and led by Chiwele Maimisa that Nevers Mumba is not an automatic candidate, National Secretary Muhabi Lungu dismissed the allegation as baseless.
Mr Lungu said Mr Maimisa is not in the party structure and it is, therefore, wrong for him to issue statements.
“I have told you 100 times that MMD is an organised institution and I shall not entertain self-appointed chairmen like Maimisa or Bowman Lusambo,” Mr Lungu said.
He, however, said the national executive committee (NEC) will convene a meeting on Saturday to decide the way forward.
Mr Maimisa said that it is not automatic that the party’s president Nevers Mumba will be its presidential candidate in the forthcoming by-election slated for January next year, adding that the MMD is a democratic party and chooses its leaders through a democratic process.
“Dr Nevers Mumba should not deceive himself and think that he is automatically our presidential candidate.
“If we don’t have money our constitution empowers the national executive committee to pick one,” Mr Maimisa said.
Mr Maimisa said Dr Mumba should leave the MMD and organise himself.
After the last 50 years one can be forgiven for thinking there’s never going to be a political party in Zambia to make a comeback after being knocked out of commission. Apparently, MMD think they can be the exception to the rule. We’ll see. I hope both the MMD and PF scoundrels will be buried, but we’ll see.
Any exposed and learned mind is alive to the fact that history is littered with political parties that have reformed, learnt their mistakes and won the confidence of the people for another mandate. Just like prisons are institutions of reformation and not relegation to the graveyard, loss of an election is a public reprimand that presents an opportunity to reinvent, realign and reconnect with with electorates on what is of common good. Is it a surprise that the USA has mainly a 2 party system interchanging on the ruling mandate? Its because loss of elections presents the DNC and RP unique opportunity to realign and win public support.
Nyau, just next door here,in Malawi,a Former Ruling Party just bounced back.Wait and see what God can do.
@Senior Citizen-You’re very right.Infact it’s better to vote for a former reformed Party than try to gamble with a new one.The trial and error voting is long gone.PF is a failed trial and error Project, and no sensible person can take that route again.Welcome back MMD.
Too early for MMD to make a comeback , mark my words ! Moreover , they can be better guaged at a General Election than a Presidential bye-election ! Here they stand as much chance as a snowball in hell !
Any functional democracy is a product of the masses embracing inclusiveness that values a hybrid leadership system. MMD must distant itself from the utopia of deviants unleashed to make thoughtless and segregation press releases. We wish MMD well as you convene to make a lofty decision with a courageous spirit with regards of the nation’s critical need for unity at risk and indeed the irreproachable lives and magnanimous sufferings of their people across the country.
indeed the people of zambia bury these two parties mmd and pf too much selfishness greed however zambia is luck that there is a steady party upnd lead by hh a party to bring dignity to the people
Uganda has manufactured their first hybrid vehicle, the Kiira EV SMACK
Here comes MMD and their bedroom woes again. I hope they manage to hide their dirty laundry. The P.F has already exposed it all, kn!ckers, affairs, money problems, unruly relatives and problem-children. Follow the P.F path and you are doomed, just like in 2011 when Ba shipundu refused to listen to anyone.
Could someone post the MMD constitution, the one on the MMD website is not readable, what is the purpose of haing a convention if the NEC still decides who should stand as Republican president, the process may be subjective and not objective. Praying for Dr Mumba, God will fight your battles.
Let us now see all well meaning patriots (not arm chair critics) stand up and support Nevers Mumba as Presidential candidate. If Nevers has to lose at elections, let it be God’s will, then God will take care of all that had their heart for Nevers. God knows how to restore. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Nevers but the clique fighting him. Thankfully, God is in control. While I advise Nevers and all behind him to put up spirited campaign, back in the mind ,they should have it to accept defeat if it be so honorably and continue with resilience until one day rain falls into MMD hands again. Looking forward to seeing MMD under Nevers back again. Having had chance to greet in hands both Nevers and Wife at Heroes stadium ran in my veins assurance that we still have leaders in Zambia.
I really don’t understand why Nevers and/or HH would want to go for this presidential bye election. Aside from the term being too short to achieve any campaign promises, if either of them won they would have a tough time with the current large contingent of PF MPs in parliament and therefore have difficulty getting things done. These guys should just agree on one candidate who can hold fort during this period and then slug it out in the 2016 general elections.
It comes down to the self one thing. If one HH or Nevers won , fair enough. If either of the two or both lost, they would have used this opportunity as yardstick or barometer to measure the current standing of their political parties in the country. Let the all contest so that no one cries foul.
Hello Mr. Senior Citizen,
You make a very good argument on how political parties bounce back into government after losing elections.
However, the question that you`ve not answered is how the MMD has transformed itself and re-aligned itself to the expectation of the people. Unless RB stands, otherwise under Nevers Mumba, MMD stands no chance.
What if RB did not stand ,does that mean MMD cant expect to win? Look at strides MMD has put in place after its losing power to PF. Nevers and the faithful’s of MMD carried on to date and have made the party attractive such as even former president wants to stand on its ticket. RB is noble. He knows his time is over. Let all now support Nevers and Campaign like no mans business so your commitment can be seen. The handwriting is on the wall. Signs of warnings are before everyone’s face. We don’t want again soon people to be trekking hospitals abroad for medication yet a poor Zambian is subjected to torture in these hospitals. We have boas of having equipment in hospitals but the same people leading us are seen flying out for medications abroad. What new thing are they bringing to us…
Saturday is soon coming for NEC -MMD to chart way forward and reveal their presidential candidate. In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray for God to preside over your gathering and that any and every demon of confusion wanting to raise its ugly head be broken by the power of the Holy Spirit. I pray for the leadership of MMD to succumb the direction of the Holy Spirit. When a righteous man ascends to the throne, the people are at peace. In the Name of JESUS CHRIST I BIND EVERY WEAKED SPIRIT that the DEVIL may want to send to fan trouble . Lord may your people come out of the planned meeting more united for good of our country. May you touch even those that were being used to fan trouble that instead of cursing that they bless your servant NEVERS and his team. I pray in your Name, Amen.
