GOVERNMENT is in the process of sourcing a loan to enable it complete construction works at the Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone.

The works are scheduled to be completed by August this year.

Minister of Transport, Works Supply and Communications Yamfwa Mukanga said government is currently faced with financial challenges to complete the project, hence its resolve to seek assistance from cooperating partners.

Mr Mukanga said government is currently in talks with various commercial banks on the matter.

“We want to ensure that we complete construction works at the airport and commission it so that we focus on other projects,” he said.

Mr Mukanga disclosed that the contractor on the project gave up due to pressure to complete the project but that another contractor has since been engaged.

“We have given another contractor to finish works at the airport, and I’m appealing to the contractor to give us quality and the project should be executed in a timely manner,” Mr Mukanga said.

He said that government will not compromise quality as it endeavours to deliver development to the people.

Mr Mukanga further stated that government will not accept additional costs from contractors once contracts are sealed.

“Contractors should not come to us after we have signed contracts to request for money as they need to be certain before we seal the deal,” he said.

He further disclosed that government will complete all infrastructure projects this year which include the construction of an modern intercity bus terminus and market in Livingstone.

  1. Ku lomba fye ifwe lionse. It is true these manners start when home when we start borrowing mealie meal, salt and saladi from neighbours and so when we grow up and become ministers/presidents we are same mannered from longtime and we still borrow. Fool-ish reasoning from a minister who has a country rich in mineral resources and man power.

    • This govt ??????. Surely, how do you keep on borrowing surely to fund projects? Have you run out of ideas? Subsidies you removed in order to cut govt expenses & save. The saved money must be used to fund the projects. If it cant fund the projects, then where is the money? Even if the airport is not completed, Zambians will not die. They’ll only die if health services & living standards are not improved. PF is behaving like someone who starts developing his small land using nkongole & boasts around of his achievements. I pity my children because they will bear the burden of paying debts that benefited a few animals which are more equal than others.

    • Economic Development is a complex phenomenon understood by many in different ways. Finding the balance is always difficulty and not always pleasant.

In many cases to achieve something, you have to give up something, as you try to right something you end up making the other worse. For example if you pursue employment, inflation increases, if you try to deal with inflation unemployment rises. If you increase expenditure, you run the risk of high inflationary tendencies and poor currency performance if you’re predominantly import orientated. If you reduce expenditure, you stifle growth and shrink the economy.

If you should develop using own resources, you end up overtaxing the citizens, you borrow for Devpt, you end up increasing the debt burden….

      Let ECL rule then judge!!!

  2. This is the minister who promised and assured us that Zambia will establish a national airline by June 2014. Unfortunately, that is all I know about him.

    • This Sata ‘s chipuba minister, is just yapping right now. KK international air port is not yet started and he wants to lie to people in Livingstone .

Mukanga first deal with KK airport before you start dreaming of Livingstone airport.

How many projects initiated by PF under Sata have been completed so far apart from Muchinga Universities.? I don’t know of any.

I only know that PF has completed some but not all projects left by MMD already fully funded and advanced like the Feira bridge.

    • National airline for what? These empty tins removed subsidises on fuel to fund these selfsame projects…where is that money?

    • PF all you know is sourcing for financing projects through loans. What kind of govt is this loans every morning by every minister? Is it a scheme for enriching selves?

  3. No strategic planning whatsoever…these empty tins are back at the door of their so called “corporating partners”…the banks, colonial master’s etc ….only a f##l would call such a partner…in hand with a begging bowl unashamely asking for funds to complete a small airport..yet they are happy to waste $2 million a year on a bloated cabinet of empty suits, waste money on Football stadia will hardly use

  4. Loan, loan and loan!!!!! In Zambia the government can never embark on a project without borrowing money. Please learn to raise money from within the country and use it to develop the country. These external loans are taking us back to slavery. The reason given which led to the previous contractor leaving the work is a fake one.

  5. Ba minister, how can you say the works are scheduled to be completed by August this year when GOVERNMENT is still in the process of sourcing for a loan to complete the works at the said Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport ? Pliz explain…!
