THE Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has submitted to parliament that though Likando Kalaluka, the presidential nominee to the office of the Attorney General, is a sober man of good character and professional integrity, he does not have the necessary experience.
LAZ vice-president Linda Kasonde, in her submission to the parliamentary select committee, said the association is satisfied that the nominee meets the threshold of being qualified to hold the position of a High Court judge having attained eleven years at the bar, one more year than the required minimum of 10 years.
Ms Kasonde said LAZ is, however, of the view that although Mr Kalaluka is a competent lawyer, both state counsels and council members who had appeared in the courts with him think that he needed increased experience and exposure at the bar to merit the job.
“It was the view of some members of the association that at 11 years at the bar, Mr Kalaluka needed a little more experience and exposure before being appointed to the office,” she said in her submission.
She said while Mr Kalaluka held a senior position in the leadership of LAZ, he has only held the position for a year and holding the position for a longer period would increase his visibility and the confidence that the profession will have in him.
Ms Kasonde said LAZ is also of the view that Mr Kalaluka, with a little more experience in the profession and in the association, should be able to attain these qualities.
“LAZ does not support the appointment of Mr Kalaluka as attorney general at this time,” she stated further in her submission.
President Lungu has nominated Mr Kalaluka, who is currently LAZ Honorary Secretary, to serve as Attorney General.

I think LAZ lack objectivity, its not about how many years one has attained in a position to gain experience, but how much one is able to tackle and resolve challenges surrounding the position. One can have 20years in a position but lacks quality and one with 5years appears more articulate. just like AGE is not what changes human character rather Maturity does. LAZ please support each other, that is why we fails many times to succeed because we lack support from our own.
Please Zambians especially the youths voice out your support for Likando. He is qualified to be Attorney General. We have always desired that young people should begin taking over and Likando just represents that. God bless Zambia

We have said many times that it is LAZ that is defective. Surely this is coming from a VP of LAZ.
This organization is not only silly but appalling and disturbing. Surely it only shows that the current leadership will go in history as the worst in all times. All that has come from them is rubbish and annoying.
Am sure parliament will dismiss this submission with contempt. LAZ should impeach this useless team.
If roles were reversed and Linda Kasonde was the nominee with similar qualifications to Likando, would she be happy with such objections? Would she see merit in such a submission? Would she have declined the nomination?

Linda Kasonde are you really a lawyer, or you just went through because you had sex with your bosses? That’s why our Judiciary has been Lurking behind its because we have lawyers like Linda. Honestly I don’t see a point in her submission all I see are contradicting statements.
Linda grow up, and learn to construct points no wonder our cases go up to 5 years the person is just in remind because Lawyers are always asking for adjournments for luck of points.

Mary Banda, you are very right. Knowing what RB’s goal is with regard to his corruption cases and knowing the close relationship between this Kalaluka guy and RB, I would not criticize LAZ for rejecting this guy. Unless, we want total domination by RB…we should look for more neutral people.
Shocker! She is contradicting herself… apparently the standard of being an AG are much higher than being a High Court judge; LAZ Secretary and a good lawyer; or even a president… wow! Not sure why 10 years isn’t enough to make him qualify as an AG.
She has these unanamed colleagues who have served with this Likando guy; you would think they would just keep quiet even if Likando wasn’t qualified, being their own.
I understand the AG’s job is to advise the president on legal matters… this would happen rarely and the AG could easily consult if need be. Our President is a qualified lawyer himself so the job of the AG will even be made easier in this case.
For me I would have liked LAZ to submit that we don’t even need this AG position as it is irrelevant.

I think LAZ has valid points and are objective. From the look of things from what they have mentioned it seems to me there could also be something negative about Likando which they wont say to the public to protect his reputation.

Interesting, refusing their own. How did they discuss this man’s nomination at LAZ? They told him to excuse himself so that he is not in the room when they were discussing him? I dont believe LAZ are being genuine. What is the difference between Mwenye and this Guy Kalaluka, let alone Nchito? Aint these all boys still smelling of mothers’s milk? No, Kalaluka is no different to Mwenye and Nchito. So if Mwenye was AG, why shouldn’t Kalaluka also?

Really strange submission. I recall this Likando Kalaluka from the Unza days as mature and hardworking. He was also Unzasu Treasurer. He was behind me by 2 years yet highly visible as a leader.

I can see Zambians are now becoming so cheap. What is Kasonde’s comment have to do with Bembas? Do Bembas control everything in this country? Please its not our problem that we are Bembas.
