President Edgar Lungu has called on SADC member countries to re-engineer and re-position themselves in the global economy and become drivers of economic prosperity.

President Lungu said it is important that the region determines its own destiny.

He said that the SADC region should do everything possible to ensure that it controls how its abundant natural resources should be exploited and processed into finished products.

He said the region should undertake reforms to create the necessary environment that would spur the structural and economic transformation of the region through increased participation of the private sector.

Mr. Lungu said it was time for the SADC Region to set the stage right by putting measures in place that will encourage and support the development of appropriate industries that will in turn transform primary raw materials into high value finished products.

He further said the immediate task will be to undertake a comprehensive mapping of the region’s diverse resources with the view of identifying where each member state can have the greatest success in capturing high value opportunities for value addition.

The Head of State said this when he addressed the 29th SADCC Extra-Ordinary Summit on industrialisation in Zimbabwe.

And Mr. Lungu said the issues of infrastructure development supportive of sustained industrial development and access to investment resources must be addressed decisively as these are critical pre-conditions for industrial take-off.

Mr. Lungu added that having in place appropriate infrastructure is critical for boosting the regions productive capacities and enhancing the global competitiveness of trade.

    • “Blocking websites and bullying users is retrogressive-Panos” todays headline on ZWD. This is the highest hypocrisy shown by zwd.they are the champions of blocking users.you can criticize Post,ZR and LT but will never be blocked.even this comment can’t stand a second on their site.

  1. By borrowing money and stealing ? Know vision that group . Mubage has made his people suffer for a long time . Lungu needs to talk about the economy. We are suffering hear in mongu .

  2. In SADC Region the phenomenon of xenophobia has taken centre-stage in a diversity of media. Let us face realities.

President Zuma has been courageous to ask leaders of other countries to take stock as to why their nationals migrate to South Africa. The answer is embedded in how SADC states manage their economies. Xenophobia can be prevented if all SADC states start developing engineering and agro-based industries.

    LESSONS FOR ZAMBIA:
(1). We must develop industries linked to agriculture. Milk, tomatoes and fruits can be processed into all kinds of preserved foods for export.
(2). Zambia should develop fully equipped state of art Clinics to be run by Schools of Medicine by Unza in Lusaka and CBU in Ndola. We need to localise specialist medical facilities to restore our integrity .

  3. The Lazy Bum trying to sound smart abroad but at home he has no policies in place to re-enforce what he is stating…he is busy commissioning foreign owned shopping malls instead of libraries or all specialists gov’t facilities.

  4. Do they need to discuss industrialisation at SADDC, why can’t they just do it.
Infact its just us individual to venture out into this. Look at the Chinese for instance, production is just at house hold level. Just in yo backyard you set uo a small factory and start manufacturing plastic toys like vuvuzelas. Its largely individuals to drive the economy.
A South African was insulting us that we can’t make anything for ourselves not even sanitary towels. I would like to start making some of these things even tooth picks. All need is some technical know how and am working on that
