Renown musician Chama Fumba alias Pilato has said that he is not a United Party for National Development (UPND) sympathizers nor a politician because politicians are the same.
In an interview today Pilato said the police have so far not spoken to him but that he has been threatened by cadres.

“The police have not spoken to me yet, I think they are being professional but cadres are on me,” he said.

Pilato said people think he is UPND but he has denied belonging to any political party and charged that all politicians are the same.

“Politicians are a problem. They want to use the poor people now but when they win elections they start dinning and defending their fellow rich people,” he said.

The musician added that he feels there is nothing wrong with his song because he never insulted anyone as alleged by some members of the society.“I think there is nothing wrong with the song, though some people are not comfortable with the Jameson part but Jameson is not an insult,” he said.

And police in Lusaka have instituted investigations into the alleged defamation of the President by musician Chama Fumba, alias Pilato, and have recorded statements from four complainants.
Lusaka Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga said in an interview yesterday that police are investigating the matter and assured that they will get to its root.

“Currently, we have recorded three statements and I have just been informed that another member of the public is making a similar complaint at Chilenje Police Station,” Ms Katanga said.
She said the first statement was recorded from Patriotic Front (PF) provincial secretary Maximo Kakumba, 36, of Lusaka’s Garden township.

Ms Katanga said Mr Kakumba complained to the police about Pilato’s song and an article in the Post newspaper edition of May 30, 2015 under the headline: “Pilato’s song excites Lungu’s critics”.
“He complained that the article is demeaning to the head of state and also about Pilato’s song, which he produced before the police,” she said.Ms Katanga said Mr Kakumba told the police that the song by Pilato is allegedly targeted at President Lungu, which is disrespectful and has brought the name of the head of state into disrepute.

And ZAM secretary-general Gloria Kabongo said in a separate interview yesterday that artists should be mindful when making reference to the President.

“We should be mindful of what we sing about. Even when we express ourselves, we should do it within the confines of the law.“The presidency is the highest office of our land, hence the need to respect the office-holder,” she said.

Ms Kabongo advised artists to desist from singing about the President in a demeaning and insulting manner. She said Zambian artists are lucky because they go scot-free whenever they insult the President.Ms Kabongo said this does not happen in other countries.

And Evangelical Youth Alliance International (EYAI) president Moses Lungu has called on President Lungu to take legal action against Pilato. He said relevant authorities should ban Pilato’s song because it is a bad song that should not be given airplay.Reverend Lungu called on the police to take action against the musician because his behaviour is unacceptable.
And MMD national youth chairperson Bowman Lusambo said that the youth are disappointed with Pilato.“Though some people are saying that he is an artist and should be allowed to express himself, the song he has sung demeans the President,” he said.Mr Lusambo said it is unfortunate that Pilato keeps mentioning President Lungu and the MMD in a disrespectful manner in his song.

    • Spot on? Are you going help him kudya beans mu jele? Am sure you know how African Governments operate, ask Twice, Kenene and Saint Maiko. Oh noyu babeyele dread…ati Dandy Crazy!

    • Ba Lusaka Times, please, be professional. Who is Ms. Katanga? You just mention the name without telling us who the person is as if we all live in the same neighbourhood! Sha!

    • Law Association of Zambia has guided, there is no defamation of anyone in the Pilato song. People, get a life and impress on the one you voted for to deliver. Go to Chawama and show me any development

    • We asked for an article on Pilato’s Alungu Anabwela song since LT was the only media outlet not carrying it and now we have it!!

BUT, we can all see how this article is shaped. There is nothing in this article that talks about the lyrics of the song and how they relate to what is currently prevailing in PF. There are no comments captured that were made by the thousands of people in support of the song. INSTEAD, the article is laden with attacks and complaints on Pilato from a few PF individuals about the song and the fact that Pilato is not a UPND supporter.

Another clear sign that LT is pro PF.

      Viva HH

    • Ba LT this is when you are publishing this story after its been on the news and online for almost a week.

This support for PF will sink this publication very soon. You enjoy the monopoly right now because you are PF vuvuzela while ZDW is being banned by the stupid PF.

  1. You Should know how to organize your songs. Pishen kazembe in the song did not use kamuzu Banda but aphiri similarly in the song bawi libawili balumebandi he never directly use the name muli ba welensky. That’s how seasoned singers sing. Not you rifrufs who directly attack people with copyright. Walamwenako chi ka Ala.

    • UPND always goes for feaces. Will never rule due to opportunism. If he can insult ECL, he can also insult your herd boy.

    • Ba UPND you will never rule Zambia. Should UPND win elections that will be the end of Zambia! There will be total war, worse than what is in Somalia!

  2. Hi Zambia.
Am not saying am a prophet but am concerned of what I continuously see in the spirit about Zambia and EL.
On 23/12/2014 the voice said EL has confused himself. -Yours to judge
24/01/2015 a hand touched EL by the throat and he melted away. – again yours to judge too.
1/02/2015 i saw MPs in parliament taking about the 2016 general election and made a ruling that the election be held months before sept 2016.
Now on sunday 31/05/2015 i again saw April-May 2016 parliament dissolving itself – NOT EL DOING SO – and we had general election.
Well may God be true & man a liar.

    • I hope you did not scip to take your medication at the time you are supposed to take your regular dosage. This has an effect of hallucinations where you see the same incident repeated several times but in different formats.

  3. Pa Zed Yaba. Stop being petty. I admire South Africans and the Americans they exercise their freedom of expression regardless!

  4. ‘Ms Kabongo advised artists to desist from singing about the President in a demeaning and insulting manner. She said Zambian artists are lucky because they go scot-free whenever they insult the President.Ms Kabongo said this does not happen in other countries.’

SONGS PRAISING THE PRESIDENT ARE ALLOWED. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CRITICISE THE PRESIDENT IN A SITIRICAL WAY NO MATTER WHAT. ONCE AN INDIVIDUAL BECOMES A PRESIDENT HE HAS IMMUNITY FROM ANY OF THAT NO MATTER WHAT. NO WONDER EVERYONE WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT. IN OTHER COUNTRIES PRESIDENTS ARE NOT INSULTED? You must be having a laugh. In America the president is disparaged every minute.

    • Our laws are different. We have the POA here, it has no meaning in America. Don’t compare the incomparable. In Georgia USA you don’t sell alcohol on Sundays, In Zambia beer has no rest for 365 days. Don’t blame EL, blame Zambia

    • The one who was comparing countries was the one who made the first statement, that it does not happen in other countries. The fact is it does, with or without the laws. That my friend is the point.

Sometimes, people should realize that ba lunshi bakonke cilenunka. If you put garbage in the highest office, you expose the highest office to ridicule. Pilato has a right to criticize the presidency just like any carder has a right to sing praises to the same.

      Zambia is not North Korea!

  5. Can you imagine the ridicule that is poured on Zuma everyday? Zambia’s courts and jails would have been bursting at the seams by now, especially that the Zambian ancient law never relents…

    • You are speculating. Could you give some instances because as far as I can see they are alive and well… Malema is still crowing, Zapiro is still rolling his pen, even statutory Madonsela is still getting a salary. Are you talking about the cheap, Nkhandla adultery candidates?

  6. Zambia is Zambia and not America or UK or any of those nations, it’s in the southern central part of Africa surrounded by right countries with the capital city Lusaka. Its in Zambia where we have a SERIAL election CONTENDER and SERIAL election loser in the name of akainde ichilema . so can you stop comparing zambia with those nations where they practice gay and legalised same xex marriages.

  7. Imisango yaba chairman ,anyone who can remember that song? Unip raised a lot of dust.KK stood up and told ZNBC to continue playing it.He said if it was a true reflecton of what is happening in society, why the fuss? Elyo ku US, uko white people here in SD don’t even want to go back to their country. They say life is too rushed there. But you left zambia,so ukuwasha imbale mu restaurant efintu.

  8. Definition of defamation

Any intentional false communication, either written or spoken, that harms a person’s reputation; decreases the respect, regard, or confidence in which a person is held; or induces disparaging, hostile, or disagreeable opinions or feelings against a person.
Defamation may be a criminal or civil charge. It encompasses both written statements, known as libel, and spoken statements, called slander.
The probability that a plaintiff will recover damages in a defamation suit depends largely on whether the plaintiff is a public or private figure in the eyes of the law

  9. Mr Kakumba complained to the police about Pilato’s song and an article in the Post newspaper edition of May 30, 2015 under the headline: “Pilato’s song excites Lungu’s critics”.
“He complained that the article is demeaning to the head of state and also about Pilato’s song, which he produced before the police,”

this guy who produced the song as evidence, where did he buy it from? is this not piracy?

  10. Mark my words, the guy is now going to make more sales on his song than if it had not been given such publicity. But if the artist had intended to humiliate the president, that is a breach of the freedom of expression and he should pay for it. If it is mere political propaganda, the govt should stop bothering him and rectify what the artist is touching in his song, if any.

  11. THIS IS GREAT. POLITICIANS SHOULD BE REMINDED THAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING AND ANALYZING THE WAY THEY RUN OUR COUNTRY RELATIVE TO THE EMPTY PROMISES THEY MADE WHEN THEY WERE ASKING FOR OUR VOTES.

    • Why are you so hurt by a song sung about somebody you may never have even met? I don’t understand this.

If somebody called you a dawg, when you know with a fair amount of certainty that you are a kat what does it matter? How many times have you been called a nigger and go offended? Kikiki.

You would rather kill your own brother for pointing out the skid marks in your underwear than the accept the fact that you actually did not do a good job cleaning up your arse. What a contradiction!

  12. Someone please educate me. How do Zambian laws work? So, if no one complained to the police he would not have been considered to have broken the law?

  13. The best song since Zambia was born. This is a reflection of PF under Lungu. Everyone knows that he drinks. Everyone knows that Lungu associates with the corrupt. Everyone knows that Lungu has failed-so whats the fuss about the song?

    • Mabvuto. Can you tell us your outstanding achievements since you were born other than dipping your little fingers in your mom’s relish pot?

    • Joe,,,,

      Ni relish pot ya nyoko?

      What’s your problem, guy?
Why do you care if Mabvuto has achieved anything or not?
Last time I checked, mamaMabvuto was cooking her own mbeba dug from her own shamba.

  14. Our very professional police always work upon receiving complaints, they are not proactive, hence the all famous “docket” has been opened!

  15. Pilato is a poet!Forgive him,”walubuli” is all i can say.Just like he has stated,he is not a politician.Who ever will be in power & do the contrary to societies expectations will be reminded through such poems.I voted PF in 2011 because i was fed up with MMD & believed Sata’s (PF s’) message of change, surely if the people we rejected are back, what did we vote for?Ba ECL is a”jubilee” president but he is doing the same old politics of the madalas’ abena RB.

  16. One zambia, one Nation na nyoko. Ku Zambia chalila. You should ask KK how many songs were produced under his leadership, it’s one of those things, citizens should be free to speak out, not ifyakulatutinya muchalo chesu, bankusa ngatwami votela mulatulaba, na tomato mwalunda, naku Unza ifikopo filapasa abamano balepona, what can we say. Wether Pilato is UPND or for Chipimo, or Edith so what, he is a free citizen, let him speak out.

  17. Gaye’s family sued Williams and Thicke as well as rapper T.I. (aka Clifford Harris Jr.) for infringing the copyright Gaye’s 1977 hit, initially seeking $25 million.

After eight days of trial testimony which captured global media attention, a jury on Tuesday ordered that the artists must pay copyright damages to Gaye’s estate, plus profits attributable to infringement. Lawyer Howard King, who represents Williams, Thicke and T.I., has since told reporters that he would appeal the $7.4 million verdict. So this Pilato ***** should be sued, that is not his song!

  18. PF should use this as a campaign song to show how disrespectful the opposition is. PF should take advantage to tell people the mentality of Zambians who want to rule them. They are so disrespectful to a seating head of state – think about you the common man. They are all encouraging the insulting of the president under the silly veil of freedom of expression.

  19. Chaps have been celebrating kolopa.com, but Alungu anabwela has agitated the living daylight out of them. Learn to take some humour ba CADRE! Go Go Pilato!!!!!!!

  20. kazembe family has sued pilato for illegal use of the their father song and demands K20,000 from the singer

  21. pilato has released another song this time about the politician who has failed to win presidential election 4 times but still cling unto the party presidency.
click here to listen to the song……………………………………………

  22. Where is Caifer and Juda Escariot since pilato is there? People can say that there is no defaming of any nature, is that true? Complaints have been raised for the song because actual names and places have been mentioned! It is not general but specific. Let that chap be taught the reality of the matter, is it freedom of speech or democracy? I wish it was Kaunda time so that Pilato could have regretted having sung the song!!!

  23. There is no art in this song. It is simply in bad taste and is intended to ridicule the President and make him feel small. It will not achieve its intended objective of making HH more popular in fact the reverse is the truth. Any right thinking citizen cannot applaud this scrap as freedom of expression or art. Our freedom of expression should not be used to hurt feelings of other people. It is unchristian and inhuman. Even in America which country is the epitome of democracy and freedom of expression they dont insult their leaders in the manner we are doing in Zambia. We must all stand up and say “NO” to abuse of freedom of Speech and NO to hate songs and speeches.

    • Isn’t ECL hurting a lot people by what he is doing, appointment of corrupt people to Parliament, having the master of corruption who is in courts of law as his Chief Advisor, riding on Sata’s legacy and vision during campaign and then changing, worse still running for presidency when he knew he was diabetic plus plus.

Point is people are hurting coz of El so they can also hurt Lungu

  24. Pilato has thrown one stone and it has brought a wired feeling to all the weak souls. Nice song though don’t be direct next time and avoid using names. You should win an award for that song. Whilst *****s are busy demanding for your head, Laz has guided that their is no defamation in the song.

  25. I DON’T KNOW WHY YOU ARE EVEN SAYING IT IS AN INSULT, WHAT DID RB DO TO THOSE COMEDIANS/IMPOSTERS WHO WERE IMITATING HIM ON THE MONKEY INCIDENT (KANITUNDILA)? TRAVOR NOAH HAS MADE SEVERAL COMEDY CLIPS ON JACOB ZUMA (WACTH DAY WALKER, MY CULTURE), NO SINGLE DAY HAS HE BEEN ARRESTED, MUGABE FELL OFF THE STAIRS PEOPLE STARTED MAKING FAN OF IT, ARE THESE NOT DEFAMATION? PEOPLE TRY TO BE CIVIL AND FREE. AM A NON PARTISAN BUT THE MUSICIAN IS JUST TRYING TO EXPRESS HIMSELF. LET HIM ENJOY THE FREEDOM.WE ARE A PEACEFUL COUNTRY THEREFORE WE NEED TO BE FREE.

  26. this ka pilato boy has been roarming the streets of ndola, stays in chipulukusu and today after few dagger starts insulting the president.am told he has even shifted from chipulukusu to kawama were his gradmother stays .whats the point of singing a song then run to your gradmother for protection.for how long are you going to hide young man?ask twice what happened to him?

  27. The issue at hand is Pilato’s song but I cant understand why people are insulting each other……u who claim to know everything, let me educate u..it is too much…. am a young person but wisdom has nothing to do with age …God chose David……. Pilato is wrong in the way he has communicated his massage…he would have said it indirectly not direct like that…. people have freedom of expression but there are limitations in everything…I understand politicians have power over literature but I cant marry it with this issue….the problem we have is rushing into arguments without understanding the issue first…..let us think beyond what has been presented……..stop pointing fingers and insulting ..Zambia is a Christian nation….. people are educated but uncivilised..
