Statement on World Youth Skills Day

15 July 2015

Today we join together as Zambians to celebrate World Youth Skills Day. This is a day designated to generating greater understanding of the importance of technical and vocational education, but also the great need to develop other skills relevant to both local and global economies. If we take time to reflect on the valuable role skills can play in our future it is possible we can take steps towards reducing unemployment amongst the youth of Zambia, and provide them with a brighter future. These skills are so vital that the United Nations has placed education and skills acquirement at the top of their new 2030 sustainable development goals.

Under the PF government unemployment, especially among youths, has reached unprecedented levels with serious ramifications manifesting in increased crime, prostitution, destitution and exploitation. This can only change with a government who is willing to empower individuals and communities through education and training initiatives, which make sure each and every young Zambian has the skills they need to take up jobs, or perhaps create their own job.

With 82% of the population below 35, education is a critical ingredient to the development of Zambia, we need to unlock our young populations skills and talents to actualise our nations economic and social potential.

This empowerment cannot happen whilst a government is in place who oversees the shutting down of numerous higher education facilities. In just one month the University of Zambia and Copperbelt University have had to shut their doors or suspend teaching. How can we expect people to realise their potential and garner the necessary skills for future work, when those who have been charged with educating them are unable to effectively manage and run the universities.

On this day set aside to celebrate technical and vocational education I wish to remind the Zambian people how committed the UPND is to investing time and money into improving the quality and delivery of education across the country. We want to improve access to all sorts of academic, technical and vocational schools to help give Zambia a strong foundation and a bright future.

Hakainde Hichilema
UPND President

  1. We can’t be successful if we just talk. HH has to start taking visible actions towards unseating RB/Chagwa PF. The Kambwilis of this world have been hit below the belt by the Chipata mafia with RB as chief guru. The wise men of the East are in-charge.

    • I BELIEVE IN YOUR CONVICTION THAT EDUCATION IS THE BEST EQUALIZER, HENCE IT SHOULD REACH EVERY ZAMBIAN. I BELIEVE YOUR CONVICTION THAT MORE EMPLOYMENT CAN BE CREATED FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE BECAUSE YOU ARE A VISIONARY LEADER. ALL WHAT ZAMBIANS NEED TO DO IS TO GIVE HH THE PLATFORM TO RUN THE AFFAIRS OF OUR MIGHTY COUNTRY SO THAT A LOT OF PRIVILEGES AND OPPORTUNITIES CAN ACCESSED BY EVERY ZAMBIAN, FROM NORTH TO SOUTH AND FROM EAST TO WEST. VIVA HH VIVA! VIVA UPND VIVA!

  2. HH how long have you been a Zambian? The employment base was destroyed by MMD in the 1990s. Since then industry has grown while population has been growing at more than 5% per annum. Give us the number of people who have lost employment since the PF came to power then I will believe you.

  3. That’s what I call presidential material but then it is beyond pf to comprehend. They only know how to insult, blame others for their failures and praise mediocre leadership. They don’t see HH as a great leader capable of leading this country to better future, but a Tonga who should not be allowed to rule this country because he belongs to a wrong tribe.

  4. hh na ku school alekopa fye ku ma neighbours yakwe pa ma desks.

You ask “Who advises this chap?” The chap does not have any advisers…akopa fye mu magazines or what we call periodicals mu library. Niba copy and paste presidents abo pamo naba Mulongoti, Chipimo…eyefilyako ba Nawakwi pantu she talks from experience.

These others are just the “Anazaa” monga Rhino beer …Anazaa

    kikikikikiki…..kikikiki…Eeeiiiissshhhh…matata

  5. Man stop being a liar, where are your statistics ba HH? Speak to current policy and how it is falling short, whats more give us a better alternative. Who do you think is going to employ all those people? Is that better than them employing themselves and the GRZ making sure they have access to retirement facilities? Political dullness is also high, learn to treat the people you want to vote for you with a little more respect. they can understand these issues if only you had the presence of mind to treat them better than illiterate scum only fit to put you in state house. #OZON

  6. There is so much theory on what needs to be done to almost all the current problems in Zambians, be it power, fuel prices, kwacha stabilisation, unemployment education etc. Unfortunately its with those not with authority. Contrastingly, those mandated to lead, it appears, do not have this expertise. The public is the end loser. How can this bridge in between be crossed to benefit the needy public, without creating a political lift to those concerned? Can they (the concerned) drop the formality for the public good? Just asking.

    • I keep on saying, the biggest enemy of this country is ourselves. A President cannot be around each one of us in responsible positions to monitor what we are doing. Everyone starting from an office orderly in the Councils etc is preoccupied with making money. Not extra money, but 100s of thousands. Come to my town most plots are sold by very junior council employees. Personally I wouldn’t aspire to be a President of such a rotten country. You should see cars and mansions owned by simple civil servants. I wish KKs leadership code can be reintroduced so that we can account for the stinking wealth we have accrued.

    • Man Kenya, did you know that RB really did not do much presidenting but somehow things were not as horrible as now? You wanna know why? it was because he and the late Levy had the right people in the right places. People who could think and knew the intricacies that come with running a ministry. Strategic thinkers who had degrees that they actually used. People who did a lot of consultation before making huge or significant policy changes. In PF, we have Kambwili, Jean Kapata, Yamfwa Mukanga, Christopher Yaluma and the creme la creme, Alexander Chikwanda and add on top of that a visionless leader. Surely, would you expect anything tangible from this bunch of clueless nincompoops? Politics of appeasement will always be a detriment to a country’s economy.

  7. You are right HH. The bottom line is that you of all Zambians represents the well off Private Sector.

So, is it a case of the Private sector in Zambia failing to assist in providing jobs? Are you providing statistics to make a credible comparator in this critic.

Is it not a fact that the gov’t provides the majority of jobs in Zambia? If you agree then the Private sector of which you are part is lagging behind in comparison to Private sectors in developed countries.

The fact is we should be looking to a bigger more efficient Private sector to assist the government in creating employment.

What are you and your buddies doing investing abroad, living in SA etc. when you could be using that money to create jobs to assist gov’t?

  8. It’s important to understand issues and then make comments, you of thugs we are tired of your shallow levels of thinking. How dull are you even to ignore important issues that affect our people. Am in the office right now and you all guys your comments are useless, you don’t even have jobs but busy supporting pf. Be reasonable and save mother Zambia and majority of jobless people. Don’t be selfish.

    • So you UPND chap think we are dull and only you is clever? We shall show your Hichilema again that it is only us the dull people who make presidents and not you the elitist when he loses again the 5th time.

    • @ Lengo,
We know that, it takes years for a country to realise that the leaders they keep electing are dull. PF found K3.98= $1.00 and now it is K7.8..= $1.00. So, it takes a WISE (not dull mind) to see how much damage PF has done. For you Lwengo, you are happy, you even say ” seleni tubombe po”.

    • It is important for Zambians to keep voting PF for the foreseeable future. They are bringing in the investors and creating a viable economy.

We have some growing pangs, but these will ease as effects of developments and investment kick in.

Right now there just isn’t any need o be dissatisfied with PF. Everything will balance if PF watch Corruption and wasteful expenditure.

Everyone of voting age, employed or unemployed is important, we cannot ignore people for things they can’t control.

    • Elections are won by men and women chiefly because most people vote against somebody rather than for somebody. – Franklin Pierce Adams

  9. TRUE leadership is not confined within a multiple choice of two individuals or parties. A nation is more important than an individual/ party. Real statesmen search far and wide for quality visional stewardship.

  10. For me to believe you Mr HH show me what you have done in your personal capacity in Southern province.Have you ever built a clinic,a road or school to demonstrate your love for man kind ?

  11. Here is an example of a statement made today from a seasoned British politician compared to clueless HH:

“The unemployment rate for March to May 2015 now stands at 5.6%, equating to 1.85 million people out of work…

Approximately 9.02 million Britons of working age (between the ages of 16 and 64) are unemployed and either not looking for work, or are unavailable to work – therefore being categorised as economically inactive….”

That’s how you comment on issues! Come out from under the bed and do some research of your own!!!

    • @IllsaywhatIwant

You must be a very dull character trying hard to be relevant.

Don’t you know that its impossible to access the employment figures from PF run government institution because there is no freedom of information law and PF are trying hard to remove it from the new constitution draft. So how on earth do you expect HH to comment using figures?

Until UPND comes into power and enacts freedom of information law, statistical figures such as unemployment rates will be kept under lock and key by the PF thugs in power.

Try hard to get your facts right before you expose your ignorance here.

Any way only people like you blinded by bread crumbs you get from Lungu can not see reality on the ground. Mines are laying off workers due to power rationing. Who is responsible…

  12. @Lson,you are the dullest yourself ! how do you support the so called billionaire who has never done anything for his people who give him 100% vote ? you are there yapping for something you do not understand.Stop supporting blindly.

    • dude, find your own name….I am flattered though, that a PF moron find my name attractive…I always have a suffix to it..usually depicting PF indiscretion …

  13. The comment by Joseph is giving ba UPND headaches.Indeed there is nothing to show that if they were given leadership, their man would perform wonders.Nothing to point to 1

  14. @?IllsaywhatIwant. There is a big difference between Zambia and UK in terms of statistics. You go to the official source in Zambia, CSO, and request for such info and they will give you historical data. Therefore, one who wants to do socio-economic research/paper will not find the data. However, the high levels of unemployment are there for everyone to see as HH has stated: crime, prostitution, destitution and exploitation. Under MMD, break-ins were forgotten but now they have skyrocketed.

    • @be objective. Don’t lie! CSO has the data, but because you and your HH believe in hearsay and don’t want to research, you end up looking like muppets. Next time tell the likes of Siyakalima to get off their behinds and actually earn their pay check from HH.

How many times are we going to tell you to change your useless strategy?!

  15. @Mwiya. HH does not need to do something in southern province to show his love for mankind. And why talk about him doing something in southern province in particular and not any other province? I am sure you have seen his love for mankind through his interactions with people of various status and tribes; the poor, marketeers, carpenters, lorry boys etc. HH has made various donations, even for church buildings and houses. The difference is that he does not stand on an anthill and boast that he has made so many donations.

    • Arkose HH. When is he continuing his programme of digging trenching and cooking nshima in the kombonis. He wanted to copy late Sata no knowing that fyaba na bene. He only went round once and got fed up

  16. HH wen u were selling the companies thru privatisation u thot the coming generation will get jobs from heaven?

    • Liar, companies were sold by your tribesmate Valentine Chitalu, George Sokota, Mtine, and other tandem of theives…
