MEMBERS of Parliament (MPs) from North-Western Province have supported calls by their traditional leaders that the provincial capital should be moved from Solwezi to Mufumbwe.

Chairperson of MPs from North-Western Province Kabinga Pande said at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday that they have resolved to support the decision taken by chiefs on the matter.

“We have decided to support the decision taken by our traditional leaders. We want the provincial capital to be moved to Mufumbwe because it is centrally located.

“And this idea of moving the provincial capital is a welcome move because it will create more jobs for our local people,” Mr Pande said.

Recently, President Lungu said he will table before Cabinet the proposal to move the North-Western Province headquarters from Solwezi to another district.

Traditional leaders in North-Western Province submitted to the President at a meeting held at State House last month that the provincial capital should be moved from Solwezi to Mufumbwe.

  1. Though a good idea, Mufumbwe is not the best location. Pls if anyone is serious move the capital to Kabompo or Manyinga.
There is no direct road from Mufumbwe to Mwinilunga. Water source to support a provincial town is not near in Mufumbwe. The proximity of Kabompo River in Kabompo and Manyinga is good for tapping and recreation/tourism. Hon Lufuma, what is your take here?

  2. Aah so it’s not so much about Mumfumbwe being centrally located but more about creating jobs for their people. Is it really necessary to start the relocation business especially now when the economy is the toilet because next we’ll hear chiefs in Luapula have resolved to move the capital to Mwense.

    • This is what happens when poverty stricken villagers & politicians waffle about, WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE COUNTRY IS BROKE, It can’t pay civil Servants, Univ Lecturers, & REALLY HAS NO MONEY EVEN TO MOVE A PUBLIC TOILET TO MUFUMBWE from Solwezi, yet they make a singsong about it!

  3. Kabompo is centrally located and not Mufumbwe. These backward MPs continue making the same mistake which they made at independence in 1964 when they chose Solwezi instead of some distant town for a tar mac road to be extended from Chingola.
It is a fact that Kabompo has adequate water, the land scape is good. The link Zambia road from western province via Mumbeji\watopa connects well to Mwinilunga and Ikelengi. How did you arrive at choosing Mufumbwe ?

  4. Late President Sata almost made Kabompo the new Provincial headquarters because he traveled widely and understood this country very well and yet the owners of the province are failing to analyze the issue objectively. Its little wonder this province will lag behind for many years in terms of development.

  5. Honorable Pande tell us how and why you arrived at Mufumbwe and not Kabompo ? give me even two good comparative reasons/advantages…..if you don’t then govt should not even tolerate you.

  6. Do not attack Hon Kabinga Pande, he is simply backing what our chiefs suggested (chief Ntambu as spokesperson at state house).

It could be that our chiefs in the whole province did some sort of compromise in the sense that Kaonde and Lamba chiefs in Solwezi have a lot to benefit by having a provincial capital in their vicinity. Eg they have access to provincial heads of government depts, and even the minister visits them first before they visit the entire . Do you think they can easily throw that away?.

Having Mufumbwe as provincial capital still gives them a bit of pride since it is in Kaonde land.

Correct me if Iam wrong, before independence Zambezi district (Balovale) was part of Barotseland. So choosing the Solwezi as provincial headquarters then was due to the wierd map of…

  7. You mean an MP was supposed to yap anyhow because a Chief has spoken ? Our Chiefs are human beings, they make mistakes and can be corrected. In all fairness,Kabompo still stands out as the most ideal location for a provincial headquarters……Technocrats please advise accordingly.

  8. Luba Kaonde, you are right when you state that Zambezi(Balovale) was part of Baroseland…..however the situation at the moment favours Kabompo for a provincial headquarters.Do not talk only about the Kaonde and Lamba Chiefs. What about the Lunda,Luvale,Luchazi and Nkoya Chiefs ? It shouldn’t be a question of tribes but centrality of an area for ease access of govt services by all. That is the concept of decentralization too.

  9. Bravo IG Stella Libongani the iron lady ! Sanity seem to be restored in Zambezi through your hard working men and women in uniform. Please get to the source of the armed cartel with an evil mind of killing other human beings at will. They should be brought to book as soon as possible.ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION.

  10. Selfish leadership has costed us enough. The desire to hav Mufumbwe as provincial capital cannot be supported by any meaningful and reasonable citizen even one from outside this province. Stop and think. Don’t let greed and lust lead you our leaders but passion for those you lead or you will be punished by God. Why should’nt we be taught by history. Change or we will never prosper.
