ZAMBIA Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has increased the number of inspections on used motor vehicles for roadworthiness from 4,094 in the first quarter of this year, to 4,322 in the second quarter.

Speaking at the 89th Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show whose theme is ‘innovation beyond the golden jubilee’ ZABS head of marketing and public relations Hazel Zulu said there is need to guarantee the safety of the public by ensuring that only roadworthy vehicles are allowed into the country.

She said 1,492 vehicles were inspected in April, 1.438 in May and 1,392 in June 2015.

“Of the 4.322 vehicles that were inspected, 2,427 were issued with roadworthiness inspections certificates at the point of origin, while 1,895 vehicles had to pay penalties at various border entry points in Zambia for failure to comply with the Zambian Standard ZS:560, which is the code of practice for the inspection and testing of used motor vehicles,” Ms Zulu said.

She said ZABS is concerned that some importers are still evading roadworthiness inspections at the points of origin.

  1. I once bought a vehicle without JEVIC and it came towing a vehicle that had……kikiki. I think it’s just a fundraising venture by the government cause some vehicles that come with JEVIC are not road worthy and I guess that’s why Uganda decided to do away with it cause it was proving to be a fraud on it’s citizens. RATSA too, abandoned the state of art equipment for fitness testing after vehicles that had JEVIC were found not to be fit by the machines after diagnosing them as having not engines and gear boxes….pwa ha ha ha.

  2. ..what do ZABS mean by….’increased inspections on used vehicles for roadworthiness..’??…when all they do is ‘check’ if the vehicle has JEVIC certificate or not of which RSTA can do at point of entry….
….my car had the JEVIC certificate I guess valid for a year….when obtaining my road tax I still had to pay RSTA for da same roadworthiness inspection….which I consider stealing from citizens….for the initial car registration RASTA are just supposed to verify the validity of JEVIC certificate and if it is still valid…they just do a quick visual inspection of cracks on windscreens, tyres, mirrors, indicators/lights and those tuma reflectors required in Zed…. without charging anything…

  3. Most cars That come with JEvIC are not roadworth .to jevic Is Just other conduit of corruption on all road blocks from all the port of entry,so the right thing for the gouvernement to it to disband ,That exercise

  4. ZABS IS STUPID. What inspections have they done, when JEVIC is done in Japan? These guys should learn to say the truth. ZABS don’t inspect vehicles. If a vehicle has no JEVIC they just charge minus inspecting the vehicle. This how foolish ZABS is.

  5. Almost every Zambian now drives a car, kikikiki! Cars picked up from the rubbish dumps of other countries! And the Zambian? Malinga tiyendesako naise!?! Simufuna kuyendesako za nyu? Where are those dumped cars going to be dumped afterwards? Awe, ndelolela fye…..

  6. Comment:
ZABS should come up with affixed amount to be payd if the car has no jevic, coz most of ZABS guys they are taking advantage stealing mone to citizens giving them unnecessary charges.
govt has imposed MVS of K2000 for importing a car which z older 5yrs from the year of manufacture, why can’t ZABS do the same to put affixed charge so that even someone buy a car which has no jevic knows that I’ll pay this amount to ZABS than same car, same year but different pelnaties ,that’s being unfair. put astanderd amount
