Five hundred AVIC International Company workers in Mongu District of Western Province who went on strike last week over their lowly pegged K 200 gratuity after the expiring of their contract in November next month have resumed work.

The 500 local workers engaged in the construction works of 26 bridges on the Mongu-Kalabo Road, who went on strike last Thursday demanding payment of a reasonable gratuity, resumed work yesterday.

The workers resumed work after being promised that their matter would be resolved amicably following a closed door meeting that was held between the Mongu District Administration and AVIC International Company management.

Mongu District Commissioner, Susiku Kamona, has implored the workers to operate normally since their matter was being tabled by the District Administration and AVIC management.

The 500 AVIC International Company local workers engaged in construction works of bridges on the Mongu-Kalabo Road had expressed dissatisfaction for the pending pay of K200 gratuity next month when their contracts expire after having worked for the company for four years.

  1. This is one of Africa’s most challenging and grand projects. However, I dont see much of it in the media

    • UMWINA ZED, THAT’S JOURNALISM FOR YOU IN ZAMBIA. DO YOU WONDER WHY ZAMBIA CAN’T DEVELOP? OUR JOURNALISTS WOULD RATHER REPORT ON WHICH POLITICIAN INSULTED WHICH OTHER POLITICIAN LEAVING DEVELOPMENTAL PROJECTS AS IMPORTANT AS THE ONE ABOVE. EVEN IF THEY REPORT AFTER 10 YEARS IF THE READERSHIP IS LUCK THE PROJECT WILL HAVE NO IMAGE OR THE SAME IMAGE THEY USED TEN YEARS AGO. OTHERWISE THE NORMAL IMAGE IS THE PRESIDENT’S OR MINISTERS HEAD. ZAMBIAN JOURNALISM LEAVES MUCH TO BE DESIRED.

  2. okay took a look at it on google earth it is indeed one extremely large project, i dont know the geography of the area but it looks like it would be a fantastic ride going through the hills and lakes

  5. That is a grand project yes, but some may not like the undisputable fact that it is one of RB’s brave decisions, an enduring legacy that cannot be taken away from RB. I hope that when President Lungu commissions it in 2017 RB will be invited along and given due recognition. The Kariba dam extension project was a shame where newcomers shamelessly claimed all the credit.

  6. So how did they calculate that gratuity, K200 after four years? Then I shudder to think what are their wages?

  7. @Terrible this project was started by Mwanawasa,it stalled when the Kuwaitis pulled out. RB did a bit of it at a slow pace. PF came and pledged to finish it. Part of the debts people are blaming PF for have gone towards paying for this project, one of the most expensive road projects in Africa in recent times!

  8. @Zambia is ours,
point of collection yes Mwanawasa did all paper works & moneys, then RB impremented the project & it was costing 1.3 trillion in 2011 April when started & ends April 2016 (5) years project.
“All KALOBA of PF no NGWE has gone there moneys has always bn there for the MONGU ~ KALABO ROAD”.
