Mighty star Musungu laid to rest

Ex- Mighty Mufulira Wanderers great Alex Musungu has been put to rest in Mufulira.

The ex-Mighty midfielder and coach who died on Wednesday was buried on Saturday afternoon at Chatulinga cemetery.

Musungu’s ex-team mates and mighty stars of old were all in attendance to pay their last respect to Musungu during a requiem mass held at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Mufulira.

The Football Association of Zambia paid tribute to Musungu who was also a CAF coaching instructor.

“For us as FAZ we have lost a dedicated person. Alex was a very dedicated coach and exemplary,” FAZ executiuve committee member Happy Munkondya said at the church service.

“We had utilized him a lot in skills and capacity building as a trainer. We shall greatly miss him he was Christian with very good values.”

Musungu, whose last postinbg was at Gomes FC in Ndola, played for Mighty ten years after joining them from Green Buffaloes in 1991 before joining the coaching bench in 2000.

The late Musungu was part of Wanderers storming league run that saw them win back-to-back title in 1995 and 1996 under the late Ashios Melu.

Some notable contemporaries with Musungu in that team include Allan Kamwanga, Anderson Phiri, Charles Bwale, Vincent Mutale, Bilton Musonda, Justin Kunda, the late Collins Mbulo and Abraham Lungu including the goal king Paul Chellah.

  1. My condolences to the family of Mr Musungu. I personally knew Mr Musungu very well as a neighbour in Mufulira. MHSRIP
