VICE-PRESIDENT Inonge Wina yesterday told Parliament that family members at her Nalolo home in Western Province were attacked by known people.

Mrs Wina said her house in the village is not guarded by the police nor by the royal establishment security.

“My house is near the kuta and the palace of the Litunga Lamboela, so it is easy for them to see what happens in that yard,” she said.

Mrs Wina said the attack on her relatives by suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres was true and she cannot cook up a story.

“What I have done is to calm PF members who feel that they can revenge. There is no need to take any revenge on anyone. Some of the people who were involved are known, some of them were not known,” she said.

She said it is time for politicians to condemn violence, especially by political cadres, saying she feels very sad to see young men and women incarcerated because of violence emanating from politics.

She said it is the leaders that incite young people to engage in violence.

And, meanwhile, Ms Wina is dismayed that girl children are being forced into marriage and some die at child birth.

Speaking during the Vice-President’s question time in Parliament yesterday, Mrs Wina said forcing girls in marriage puts their lives at risk

She said men who marry young girls violate their right to choice and other basic human rights.

Mrs Wina condemned traditional practices that put girls’ lives at risk, saying that it is unfortunate that some people have come to embrace the retrogressive culture at the expense of children’s welfare.

“Early marriages that Zambia is experiencing currently are costing the country a lot because girls are dying at childbirth,” said Mrs Wina.

The Vice-President condemned men who are perpetrating early marriages for sending minors to the grave early.

She, however, assured that Government is working with co-operating partners to address early marriages with the seriousness the matter deserves by attempting to criminalise the offence.

Meanwhile, Mrs Wina has dismissed assertions by opposition members of Parliament that the electronic voucher system has failed.

She said the Minister of Agriculture, Given Lubinda, will issue a ministerial statement in the House about the e-voucher at an appropriate time so that parliamentarians can have facts and stop speculating.

And Government has warned that it will not condone overzealousness in police officers.

Deputy Minister of Home affairs Gerry Chanda (PF) told Parliament yesterday that police officers who exceed their authority do not have Government’s support.
Colonel Chanda was responding to a question by Chadiza (MMD) MP Allan Mbewe who wanted to find out why politicians are arrested on Fridays denied bail and access to their lawyers.

Col Chanda said Government was in the process of introducing a new police training curriculum that will help police uphold human rights and portray a good image of the Zambia Police Service.

    • “Family members at her Nalolo home in Western Province were attacked by known people.” and there is something the VP knows which she wants to hide behind politicizing the attack! The people are known by the family members I presume……if not a social tiff that has nothing to do with politics why want to politicize it? Ninkongole yamene sibalipila which incensed those who attacked the homestead! Why sensationalize? Please can any of the media capable get the story from the other side so we get enlightened on fact!

  1. The Winas are traitors. They have sold Malozi for pieces of silver and a seat at the dining table with the devil.

  2. But where are the photos please? why are they kept a secret? where is the evidence to support you claim mama? We want to believe you, but your lack of evidence confuses us.

  3. Victims are usually paraded in such situations. Has anyone seen any pictures of either the victims or the house whose windows were broken? If this story is just for PF gaining political mileage then it will be unfortunate.

  4. What’s there to defend bo Inonge? Its easier to burn down Jameson’s tavern in chawama. The people who attacked your place want you & your relatives out of nalolo. The simple reason is they feel betrayed.
You know them, why not prosecute them. & you talk of revenge, on who? Own up & show leadership. Politicizing these issues won’t earn you sympathy. Ever wondered why those people have supported you thus far?

  5. If it is easy for pipo in the litungas yard to see what happens at your place, can LT get the correct information from witnesses?

  6. Another confusing article after madam IG’s on the harmless stray bullet…..not a good day to read online news…developed a headache caused by conflicting/contradictory/unqualified statements….sho!

  7. If you and your boss are against violence why do you only complain when it’s the relatives of a vice president (you) who are attacked. When your friends were being attacked by jerabos and the police in kitwe and luanshya you were zee. Your SG shot someone you were zee. That’s why someone said it’s amazing how such an old woman can be so useless. Maybe you are becoming senile.

  8. WHY BLAME UPND IF THERE REALLY WAS A RANSACKING OF YOUR HOUSE? HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THAT YOU ARE A TRAITOR TO YOUR OWN PEOPLE MAMA?

  9. I think she is trying to say that some extended family members attecked her close relatives, and she doesn’t want those culprits arrested and sent to jail. To me this sounds more like a family feud, more than political violence. If it was purely political, she would have had the suspects arrested.

But I just wanted to disagree with her comments about early marriages being the cause of those girls dying during child birth: “early marriages that Zambia is experiencing currently are costing the country a lot because girls are dying at childbirth”.

Obviously early marriages is bad and must be eliminated by any means but I would like to think the potential young mothers are dying because of poor medical facilities. Biologically once a woman conceives, they should be able to…

    • continued….Biologically once a woman conceives, they should be able to carry the pregnancy for 9 months and give birth to the healthiest babies, perhaps more healthier than a woman in their late 30’s. The fact they are dying at birth has nothing to do with the fact they got married early. I have watched an American program called ‘young mothers’ (or something like that), when the mothers are as young as 16, 15 or even 14.

Also part of these early marriages are due to poverty and poor education system, among other things and so the govt is to blame for a lot of such problems.
