The United Party for National Development (UPND) this afternoon requested for the postponement of the debate on the constitution to tomorrow following concerns raised by some Members of Parliament through points of order that some of them had just seen the document today, and needed time to go through it.
UPND parliamentary Whip Garry Nkombo requested that debate be deferred to tomorrow to allow Members of Parliament some of whom had just seen the document today after returning from their various constituencies, time to go through the document.
Mr Nkombo said while he was communicated to by the Clerk of the National Assembly about the amendments in the bill, communication was only made on Friday evening making it difficult to get hold of his fellow UPND Members of Parliament most of whom had already travelled to their respective constituencies by then.
Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mkhondo Lungu who was presiding over the proceedings allowed the deferment of the debate tomorrow after consultations.
One would think paperwork on such an important matter would not be sent by snail mail. Sensible.
Gary and his UPND miss calculated. They had time to debate this issue. However, they played cheap politics thinking PF could not assemble the numbers.
Cornelious Mweetwa had nothing to say but just to shoot down the agenda.

When the bill went through the first reading where were these mps? The doc hasn’t changed an iota.

When did UPND become interested in the constitution? Suddenly they have become interested because there is the issue of a running mate? In Malawi when Bingu wa Mutarika died, they were given Joyce Banda who was a running mate of Mutarika during the elections. Mutarika put her there because he thought she would not challenge him but if he failed to recognize that he did not control death. He died earlier than Joyce and Joyce had to be made president to the chagrin of most Malawians. What saved the Malawians were the elections which came a year later where Joyce lost lamentably. Parliamentarians therefore have to tread carefully on this running mate clause. You do not want to have a Kambwili as a running mate and president incase anything happens.
The merit of having a running mate should not be evaluated on the basis of the quality of the running mate. If the running mate leaves much to be desired, the presidential candidate risks losing; that’s why I expect a quality running mate if the law is put in place. The status quo is where you expect the likes of Kambwili to end up being presidents.
Looks like most chaps do not understand these matters. This is a Constitution amendment bill meaning there are some amendment to the bill that was presented and that definitely requires MPs to study the amendments. It is an important document and hence requires thorough understanding. People, this is not about amendments but about doing the right thing for Zambia

Please shows us the facts or an internet link directing to that information. I think it is time to insert a close in our constitution which stipulate the eligibility of a voter:
(1) To register as a voter one must have at least a diploma or higher qualifications , this will help us to eliminate these kaponyas.
(2) The president must have good proven entrepreneur skill
nonsense! in democracy everyone including kaponyas has the same right to vote, peroid. we are not a plutocracy, govt of the wealth, or Corporatocracy

Lets wait and hear to what they will say today. I only hope they will not walkout of parliament. If they do, Zambians should give them a vote of no confidence next year by giving the mandate to the Heritage Party Candidates.
