UPND councillors in near punch up over land in Choma

Share

A PUNCH-UP almost erupted on Monday between two United Party for National Development (UPND) councillors during a full Choma Municipal Council (CMC) meeting over a piece of land one councillor has obtained.

The altercation started when Kulundana ward councillor Jonas Munkombwe asked whether Jackson Makwamba, as chairperson of the real estate development committee, was in order not to declare interest in the debate of a piece of land he has acquired on Choma-Livingstone road.

This angered Mr Makwamba, who told Mr Munkombwe not to start “witch-hunting” because he would “soon” get what he is looking for.

The visibly annoyed Mr Makwamba, however, left the room and only returned after the full council meeting had finished analysing the progress of his committee.

The councillors were reviewing progress for various committees of the local authority.

“Honourable Munkombwe, let me warn you that witch-hunting is not a solution and it will not take you anywhere because I am not the only councillor who has acquired a plot,” Mr Makwamba said.

He returned after the meeting had started discussing the audit committee and upon his arrival, Mr Munkombwe rose on a point of order to find out if his colleague was in order to take his seat without apologising for issuing threats against another councillor.

“Your worship, I would like to find out if my colleague has something to say over the earlier statements he issued. Something like an apology,” he said.

Mr Makwamba was, however, not amused with Mr Munkombwe’s remarks saying he could not apologise.

“I cannot apologise. Honourable Munkombwe has started a war which will never end. The war has just started,” he said.

Mr Makwamba said many names of councillors are appearing on the list of people who have acquired land in Choma and he wonders why Mr Munkombwe has decided to pick on him.

“You and I shall face each other very soon. If you want let’s go outside and fight,” he said.

Mr Munkombwe, took up the challenge, got off his seat and made for the exit in readiness for a fight, but mayor Professor Mwaanga intervened in the matter and told Mr Munkombwe to take his seat.

Mr Mwaanga said there is no need to fight because the councillors belong to the same council.

“There is no need for us to start fighting. If we are to develop Choma, we need to be united because we are indeed one,” he said.

    • These councillors are a fore taste of UPND governance, therefore HH must expel all corrupt elements
in leadership. HH must be careful with some men and women in UPND, i mean those who just want to enrich themselves and their families and not to serve the people of our blessed nation.

If HH fails to discipline these councillors, next we will hear that UPND MPs in near punch over this and that. The worst will be to hear that they have punched President HH now. May God help HH to rule UPND upto when he will cease to be the President of the party.

  1. When we say politicians are the some u say yo messiah will will bring heaven on earth what if u are in power wat can happen fighting in opposition wat more.

  2. So this whistle blowing party is also an accomplice in this man-eat-man society? Its a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Walk the talk, don’t preach water and take beer.

  3. Infact this just demonstrates that the UPND is so transparent and passionate about fighting corruption to an extent that when they suspect corruption they become so agitated and the passion to fight corruption can even get physical. These are the leaders we want….who will not only fight corruption by way of pronouncements but also fight corruption physically. Congratulations to the Choma Councillors for showing us how it is done

    • Let’s see what will be done, a mere articulation concerning corruption is not enough, unless they are the same same as PF.

  4. UPND, why preach water only to take wine? Be realistic and walk the talk. What checks and balances can an accomplice in a felony purport to keep? Pretenders are worse than murderers.

  5. That is just an ice-berg of the real upnd cadres who want to form government next year. HH should be wary of such thugs because they will think the whole Zambia is their. This is certainly a minus for upnd and its symphathizers.

  6. Peter, how ignorant you are at even a bit of law or human rights. People should settle issues by reasoning and fighting. I suppose that is what hh is for and not the other way round. Otherwise, under upnd, even parliament will all be ‘amakofi’!

  7. Let’s face it, there is simply no viable and better alternative to the current government. UPND may just be worse, you can see for yourselves the tip of the iceberg called UPND…….kikikikiki.
What is the difference, all councillors UPND, MMD, PF, FDD etc, live and breath plots. So the colour of the chitenge shirt they wear is irrelevant, they are all in it for the plots. Looking at this, UPND may just turn out to be the worst party so far, you wanna try them and regret?

  8. This shows how they can be behaving if they were to be entrusted to rule this country. UPND is not a good party. It has no morals. Vote for all Heritage Party Candidates in 2016.

  9. First we heard about the Livingstone mayor (a UPND man) who acquired 18 plots and now Choma UPND councillors accusing each other of acquiring plots. UPND and indeed all parties should should have morally upright councillors to work for the people. As the situation stands now there is no service delivery by the Zambian councils. All the councillors do is to acquire pieces of land cheaply which they later sell at very high prices. I now understand why frustrated South African citizens riot and destroy the properties of corrupt councillors.
