UPND vice president for politics Canisius Banda has said that it wouldn’t be wrong for him to be picked as UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema’s running mate in the 2016 elections.
Dr. Banda has however, cautioned the party to be very careful in the manner it handles the issue of the presidential running mate.
Dr. Banda said that the party’s decision on who should be Mr. Hichilema’s running mate should be inspired by God.
In an interview with Qfm News, Dr. Banda urged his party to seek God’s guidance on the issue.
Dr. Banda stated that this was because the decision of who should run alongside Mr. Hichilema is one that should unite the UPND and ensure its victory in next year’s general election.
He added that whoever will be the presidential running mate between him and his counterpart for administration Geoffrey Mwamba should equally add value to the party ticket.
Asked whether he would leave the UPND in the event that he is not picked as the running mate, Dr. Banda ruled out that possibility, stating that what is paramount to him is selfless service.
The gloves are slowly coming off. Its time to turn to God. we need a day of prayer.
Well said Dr. Banda. It shows that the UPND is not short of high quality leadership – a breather from the scuffles we saw towards the January 2015 where the PF hyenas publicly undressed each other and tore each other to pieces.

Neither Banda nor GBM should be picked as HH’s running mate. Miles Sampa, once he has resigned from PF, should be chosen for that role. Band and GBM should support that imminent decision.

Dr. Banda, why shoul it not matter if you are not picked as Presidential running mate when you joined UPND earlier than GBM? Surely, are you saying GBM is more Vice-presidential material than yourself. Come on Dr. Banda, you deserve the Vice-presidential running mate than GBM. Money should not be the qualification for being presidential running mate.
Do tell Dr Banda, what’s happening in your party? Are there rumblings already? If the choice is between you and GBM, then I would pick you simply because GBM isn’t leadership material. He was put in charge of Defense and messed up over there, firing people that stood up against his corrupt activities, awarded contracts to his companies, etc and then of course he is uncouth and a wife beater. His image is greatly tainted. So, I would agree with you, the UPND running mate must be someone of value.
But don’t worry, its not only UPND in this dilemma, even PF is in trouble. Who do they pick – Inonge, Sampa, Kalaba, a North Westerner or maybe even a Southerner to divide the vote in Southern province.

What does Inonge bring to the table? She will surely not deliver Western province and then her age is a factor. When you think of adopting a Southerner as running mate for PF, there is more value there. That person will surely manage to get more votes from SP than Inonge will manage from WP. What about the Northerners, will they be happy with playing second fiddle again especially that wit the new Constitution, the VP can become President! I think its more complicated than you put it. Already, there is noise from Luapula, they want Kalaba and then Northerners want Sampa. For your information, Sampa can bring more voters to the party than Inonge. These are the things that PF has to deal with. A running mate will either make or break parties come 2016.
The truth of the matter is that GBM has (not) been accepted in UPND. HH did not consult properly. GBM has brought nothing to UPND. GBM is PF and will always remain PF.
Sometimes you wonder if UPND is a one man party. It appears HH feels justified to make decisions without consulting. He has never been challenged for his leadership. He does not want to have a convention. He runs UPND like his own company.

Gbm was promised a bigger position than just being a minster if it was not for the that, gbm wouldn’t have joined upnd, check the body language in the photo, I don’t think Dr banda gets on very well with gbm, Hh is the one bring these guys together, the game of politics is about to unfold, watch the space.

It’s no skin off my nose, whom UPND chose as running mate. However, I have warmed up somewhat, to the tone Dr Banda uses here in his advice. Relaying on God Almighty for good advice is always the best way forward.
But, UPND could take a bit further by changing all their ambitions and produce a different manifesto altogether. Chiefly, give us another idea of how they will tackle this international led mini recession and limit it’s effects on our economy. That is, show they understand PF is not the mother of all economic problems and the Kwacha and the Oil and the performance of copper on the international market!
About copper, I couldn’t help but notice how department stores are now selling so many copper products! Copper bottomed Sauce Pans, stove top Kettles, copper Mixing Bowls ALL at very affordable prices! Seems there is diversification in the use of Copper Stockpiles!

President Edgar Lungu has been presented with the constitution of Zambia bill no.16 and the constitution amendment bill no.17 of 2015.
Clerk of the National Assembly Doris Mwiinga presented the documents to the president on behalf of the Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini.
And speaking after receiving the bills, President Lungu promised to sign the bills into law in the first week of January 2016.
He said he would have signed the bill immediately, but was unable to do so due to the petition he has received from Heritage party president Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda which he intends to study and reflect on.
President Lungu says he wants to give the people of Zambia what they want; adding that in a democracy one should do what the majority wants.

Read this article very carefully, Canicious Banda says “It won’t be wrong if I get picked as HH’s running mate”, if at all you have been taught how to read in context, you will know that there is a big battle in UPND. Its like seeing a calm river when in infact the under current is so severe.

Under this electoral system,HH cant be ECL’s vice when he losses next year. What would necessitate HH’s becoming vice to ECL is a government of national unity and this occurs when the country is engulfed in political turmoil/instability after polls.
50% +1 will really be a uniting factor. I don’t care about the individual fights and the cracks they will cause in the political parties. But the good things there will be compromise to win. But for other royal UPND MPs it will not make sense to have both the president and running mate from one province. That I believe all the MPs who love their party (UPND) would like to see. All the MPs in Southern Province will gladly be happy to have HH as president and a running mate from other parts of the country.
As for my General I think he is worried about numbers required to stand a presidential candidate. This is a lone battle which I have been wondering why this man has even been contesting for presidency. I suspect there is monetary gain for him cos it has not been making sense for him to…
