WOMEN groups have saluted President Edgar Lungu for assuring that his running mate in the August 11 general elections will be a woman.
They are happy that the Head of State is committed to empowering women.
Mr Lungu announced during a Patriotic Front (PF) women’s sensitisation committee fundraising function on Saturday that his running mate would be a woman because he was an advocate of gender equality as enshrined in the Constitution of Zambia.
The Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL) said President Lungu had shown his commitment to empowering women by giving equal opportunities in decision-making positions.
Inonge Wina 628x350ZNWL executive director Beauty Katebe said Mr Lungu was the first Head of State to appoint Inonge Wina as the first female vice-president, and that there was no doubt that he would implement what he had promised.
Ms Katebe said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that it was delighting to note that the President was in the forefront advocating equal opportunities between men and women.
“Indeed, our President has been advocating equal rights as witnessed in how many women have been appointed to decision-making positions.
“We are delighted to know and be assured that he wants a woman to be his running mate.
“This gives us more power to advocate women’s rights because we have a leader who is championing this,” she said.
She urged other political parties to emulate Mr Lungu’s position and adopt women in the forthcoming general elections.
Young Women’s Christian Association Copperbelt coordinator Sharon Chisanga was similarly impressed with the continued pronouncements by the President advocating equality.
Ms Chisanga commended Mr Lungu and said Zambia was lucky to have a leader who had a heart to champion women’s influence in leadership roles.
Ms Chisanga also called on other political leaders to emulate President Lungu and appoint more women in decision-making posts.
Only President Lungu means well for all Zambians. Kudos. 2016 again!
Appointing women in positions so as to be used as ponies in personal political survival games is in neither the women’s nor national interest. John McCain in the USA for example tried to sway women to vote for him by appointing a duuumb Sarah Palin, the smart American voters saw through it. In fact a lot women voted against him precisely because they felt they could not support attempts by men abusing their plight to gain individual political mileage. Zambia needs serious & competent leadership, not desparate political survival theatrics.
Since indeendence, this is it Chagwa you got it right! Here is hope for my sister’s and girl child. Cursed are the male chauvinists with a sense of entitlement that decision making belongs to men only and their money. Let let girl child rock.

The announcement of a female Running Mate resonates well with the masses. The balance in gender will go along way in effectively bringing development to all parts of the country. This humble Lungu is a man of the people and certain breeds of human being will never appreciate the relentless, hard working PF teams who execute the government’s agenda in line with the PF manifesto. President Lungu has proved the haters wrong. His Excellency is clearly on the right path and the Late HE MCS couldn’t have left us a better man to guide the nation through troubled waters. The PF has worked remarkably well under difficult economic conditions. It is no wonder that the first round of voting will deliver Lungu a resounding victory and bury the political careers of some cheap crooks.

He is appealing to the female populace and he has already warmed up to the christian/evangelical community with his national day of prayer rhetoric. This is his strategy.

Let’s not get carried away, women are not the biggest supporters of other women. Even if ECL has a female running mate, he will still be voted for by PF sympathizers and not women from other parties. Information within the PF ranks indicate that the female running mate will be Joyce Nonde Simukoko the former president of Federation for free Trade Union of Zambia. She a member of the PF Central Committee and a level-headed person. She is well known in Zambia and among civil servants.

Leaders should be appointed based on some criteria and gender should not be one of them. We need leaders who will refuse to hire a $300,000 private jet just to go to New York and make sure our students have bursaries giving them meal allowaunces, books and paying their lecturers so they dont rioting and then get blamed.
