Two year old Toddler admitted after drinking Kachasu

A two-year-old girl of Kaizya village in Mpulungu district of Northern Province has been admitted to Mpulungu District Hospital after drinking a traditional spirit called Kachasu.

The girl was rushed to the hospital in an in unconscious state.

Mpulungu District Medical Officer, Chitondo Saloule, confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Mpulungu today.

Dr Saloule, however, said the girl is out of danger and her condition is stable.

And mother of the girl, 35-year-old Theresa Kamwelu, said the incident happened on Thursday around 19:00hrs.

Ms Kamwelu explained that the girl took the alcohol which their neighbour gave them to keep.

She has since thanked the hospital authorities for helping the child survive.

And Northern Province Permanent Secretary, Hlobotha Nkunika, is saddened with the incident.

Mr Nkunika, who visited the girl, has since urged parents to ensure safety of children by keeping all poisonous substances out of reach of children.

  1. Which neighbour would give you illicit beer to keep and for what? Why wouldn’t they keep it themselves?
    Very stupid excuse!

    • Shame. I wonder how a child would drink such bitter stuff without instinctively spitting it out.

    • You know what happens in those homes where they sell Kachasu? Clients arrive as early as 10hrs. They would then sit on small stools while a lady (brewer) goes around to welcome them. Before they start driving, they have to say goobye to each other, Mwende bwino mukwa, or tukamonana mailo mukwai. so when you arrive at the drinking place, Rule no 1 is to say bye to your friends before you start drinking. Rule no. 2. The area will be surrounded by boys with ifi bala (wheels borrows), so you should select a wheel borrow to take you home. Rule 3. The wife at home must always keep a K5 to pay the boy who bring the husband in a wheel borrow or else he will be taken back.

    • The trueth
Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk if only you knew how you have made me laugh so loudly

  2. I suspect the mother got the liquor on purpose and could have given the girl in the hope of treating a ‘disease’ they call umusamfu…..Kachasu is so bitter that a girl of two years cannot drink even half of a tea spoon on her own….even grown up adults do first pray before consuming the stuff…they make all sorts of ugly faces when swallowing the stuff…no way that girl could drink that on her own….that’s is a police case…..she could have died…..time to lock up the mother to deter other women subjecting children to such barbaric acts…

    • ..al the police needed to do is interview the kama girl alone…at that age they do not lie….she could have revealed if she was forced to drink it…the police have to be vigilant and proactive in such incidences…

  3. Comment:this Woman She Should Caged.Hw Do You Keep A Poisonous Substance For Someone? You Ar So Useless And Careless.Thank The Doctors Saved The Child.

  4. Leftovers from Lungu’s cup. Kikikiki

  5. THANK GOD THE LIFE OF AN INNOCENT CHILD WAS SAVED. NEVERTHELESS, YOU PEOPLE YOU HAVE GIVEN ME A GOOD LAUGHTER WITH YOUR COMMENTS. AWE SURE MY ZAMBIA IS A WONDERFUL COUNTRY BECAUSE WE FREELY TALK AND CRITICISE ONE ANOTHER AND GIVE EACH OTHER LAUGHTER

MAY GOD BLESS MOTHER ZAMBIA, MAY GOD BLESS EVERY SOUL IN ZAMBIA ! PEACE ! !

  6. Bufi. I tried drinking kachasu and I couldn’t swallow a sip yet I drink booze. What about a baby.

  7. Cage the mother for negligence, how the hell can a two year girl take kachasu??? Thts the job for NGOs,get the girl and take her by a dropping centre

  8. Send the mother ad the neighbour to chimbokaila period, this is what happens when leaders abuse beer, kachasu everywhere even at plot 1 and now babies wil start taking it soon if we don’t vote wisely pa 11 th august.

  9. This woman wanted to kill the girl, she can’t manage to feed her. So the easy way was to give her kachasu to make it look like an accident. But you can’t blame her things are just bad, when a civil servant is complaining what of a woman in the compound of mpululungu alapelela kwisa. Wake up bane nabucha. 2016 vote wisely.

  10. The mother to the girl has just lied! No neighbour can keep kacasu at another person’s home. The truth of the matter is that she brews the staff! Surrounding compounds and villages in Mpulungu are known for brewing kacasu!! Similar incidence happened at Muombo village in Mporokoso in 1990 the child drank similar staff. Unfortunately, the child passed on!!!

  11. Indeed, very stupid excuse ati neighbour gave her to keep? Typical bukabolala that is associated with some people.
