World Farmers’ Organization President (WFO) Dr Evelyn Nguleka has announced that Zambia will this year host the 6th General Assembly for the organization.

Speaking at a media briefing Dr Nguleka who is also Zambia National Farmers’ Union ZNFU President said the assembly which is the largest gathering of farmers in the world puts the country in the lime light at a global stage and that it also gives Zambia an opportunity to sell itself to the wider world.

She noted that the assembly comes at an opportune time when the country is working hard to make agriculture the mainstay of its economy.

She said her organization believes that agriculture is the surest way to fight poverty.

“The abundant minerals have brought us where we are over 50 years but they are wasting assets; their prices are volatile; and we are not insulated from international shocks that come with metal prices volatilities. For this reason it has been an uphill battle to fight poverty.

“We believe that agriculture is the surest way we can fight poverty going forward, especially in rural areas where poverty levels have remained stubbornly high,” she said.

She explained that the assembly will build momentum on the key role farmers in the quest for a more inclusive and socially and environmentally sustainable agricultural development model.

Further adding that the AG will serve as a valuable platform of discussion to reflect and to promote the critical role of partnership among farmers, governments, private sector and civil society to achive a sustainable development of agricultural sector for all with regards to the SDG no 17.

She also said the Assembly will discuss establishment of effective partnerships among the different actors of the value chain as it is critical to fostering farmers’ access to market and gain better returns.

  1. Good news on Zambia hosting the international Agri show, certainly puts us on the map. We are heading in the right direction. But it’s important to point out that Zambian citizens have in the past been called to ‘Return to the Land in a major move to improve Agriculture in Zambia. President KK made this call for advancing Zambian Agriculture, and some of us responded. My father took early retirement and bought our farm along Great East area, where I am returning to carry on the farming. Some of us responded to the call but majority of Zambians just moan and groan against the gov’t without realising they too can help in developing that sector.
