Government gives Saturday league kickoffs go-ahead

FAZ Super Division matches scheduled for Saturday will go ahead as planned despite President Edgar Lungu declaring the day of national mourning in honour of former Minister Lewis Changufu.

Changufu who died at Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital-UTH on Wednesday will be buried on Saturday.

However, Government has given FAZ a go-ahead to stage the week 8 matches.

According to a circular issued by FAZ acting General Secretary Katongo Kabungo, matches will go ahead with clubs observing a minute of silence before kick-off.

“All Premier League games – from Super League to the third division – will go on as scheduled for Saturday 30th April, Sunday 1st May and Monday 2nd May 2016,” FAZ stated.

“Players and officials will be required to wear black arm bands and together with the fans observe a minute of silence to mark the day of national mourning as declared by the Government in honour of former Cabinet minister in the UNIP government Lewis Changufu.”

Meanwhile, the week 8 match between Nakambala Leopards and Nchanga Rangers has been postponed due to the outbreak of cholera in Mazabuka.

Cases of cholera have been reported in Mazabuka.

League schedule should not be interrupted by National Day of Mourning unless it is a sitting President… its simply too costly to the TV companies who buy these TV rights…why can you not simply wear black arm bands…this is why FAZ doesn’t get the best deals for TV companies; min you they are people outside Zambia who watch these matches.
