FORMER Defence Minister, George Mpombo has been acquitted in a case in which he was charged with failure to secure a firearm.

This was in a matter where Mpombo, 61, a farmer of plot number 10, Maranatha Farm in Chiwala area of Masaiti, was charged with one count of failing to secure a firearm contrary to Section 31(1) of the Firearms Act Cap 110 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence were that between December 1, 2015 and January 19 this year in Ndola, Mpombo, being a person in lawful possession of a firearm, namely, Norinco 9.9 millimetres, serial number 202329, failed to secure the firearm to avoid it to come into possession of a person not lawfully entitled to be in possession of it.

Appearing before Ndola principal resident magistrate Obbister Musukwa yesterday, Mpombo was acquitted of the charge.

When the matter came up for judgment, magistrate Musukwa said that the prosecution team failed to prove its case against Mpombo, thereby acquitting him.

Magistrate Musukwa stated that the court had established that Mr Mpombo had secured his firearm.

The former Defence minister was charged with failing to secure a firearm, linked in the murder of Ruth Phiri, who was the girlfriend to his son.

Mpombo’s son is suspected to have murdered his 17-year-old girlfriend using his father’s firearm.

  1. Another case of overzealous state prosecutors wasting everyone’s time and money. Even the lead investigator said the cupboard was tampered with in his submission. This case should have been dismissed a long time ago.

  2. We missed your big words on Chakolwa Samalama’s incompetence. Welcome back, ba mwisho.

  3. I said it from the start this was a non starter…another waste of state resources!!

  4. ..there are so many prosecutors who just like to sensualise cases to portray that they are working….even me a layman in legal matters knew from the on set that this case was a washout…..

  5. It’s good that everyone in Zambia now knows our legal system takes its role in protecting us seriously. No matter his now proven innocence, he was charged guilty until proven otherwise by the law. At least the deceased young Lady has been agitated over by the law.

His son is not going to be innocent though, since he cannot claim his father made it possible for him to take the fire arms to kill. He clearly is proven to have deliberately sought out the weapons.

  6. Dear Mr Mpombo,
CONCON PREDICTOROCIOUS FOUNTAIN EPITOMY OF PRODIGIOSIOLOGY.
    FELICITATIONS INFINITUM.
    YOUR BELOVED ULUBUNDA

  7. my emancipation tonsorial tendentiously contagiously tremendously Delicious after the factious trial-ism has phantasmagorical made a concoction of happiness of voluminous proportions
